But like another commenter said, she realized she needs help and is taking the steps to address. That’s the most important step. I sincerely hope she and Whiskey turn out to be an awesome team.

It should be great. Get her to shut up and get the eye contact down pat.Hands are better than mouth....errrrr in some occasions.

All of a sudden I'm seeing so much kindness and edited comments. Looks like Robert's message got across to many of you.

I love how non judgemental you are Robert. So many trainers shame owners which is really disappointing and not our job. They seek out trainers for help. Anyone who works in the pet dog industry knows how many poorly matched dogs and owners there are, out there. I believe you and I strongly align when I say it's our job to keep dogs in their homes as much as possible and often that involves some level of compromise between meeting the owner's needs whilst maximising the dog's well being.

"its a command, not a request" best advice ever given on any training video. Basically a catch phrase for the subject of dog training.

Good for her to seek your help. If she continues the lessons she’ll be successful with her dog. Excellent video

Thinking that the lady in the video may possibly lack in needed self-confidence, yet she seems quite accepting of Mr. Cabral's instruction. If she continues in regular training sessions with Mr. Cabral & consistently home trains according to his philosophy & methods, her own self confidence as a Malinois owner & trainer will probably show vast improvement.

Love that she’s getting help NOW but let’s not forget that people know better at the end of the day. She is completely frustrated and having a Mal for three years who behaves like this and seeing her level of frustration with him you can tell she didn’t do her proper research prior to getting him, nor put in actual foundational work when it was most crucial as a puppy. It broke my heart for the dog. She seems like as much as she’s trying in this session, she’s still mentally checked out and disconnected from the dog. She needs a lap dog or a lower drive dog to feel not only better about herself but about her relationship with her dog as well. I don’t see her being consistent with what this dog really needs for his lifetime. I wish them well…

I know everyone is giving the woman a hard time, but personally, most of my clients are exactly like her. They are so intent on getting the dog to do something, that they just yell out a bunch or commands like a machine gun. She is as distracted as the dog. It would be interesting to see if she follows up with anything Robert told her.

Lovely Mali. They need strong, calm leadership. The owner will have to learn that in order to build that relationship. I’d bet Robert mentioned her use of multiple / confusing commands too in her session. Dogs need clarity and consistency. Not being judgemental here as we’re all learning with our dogs no matter what our experience, but the owner needs training as much as the dog. Good on her for seeking help. Well done Robert for demonstrating excellent use of the ecollar too.

Some breeds just aren’t really meant to be “pets”. I have a Euro Doberman that is way too much dog for me, and I thought that I knew what I was getting into, and thought that I could handle it….especially since having multiple Dobermans in the past. But this one comes from champion protection sport lines, and I didn’t research as thoroughly as I thought I did, and the Breeder wasn’t very informative either. Anyway, I take full responsibility for my mistake, and my life revolves around MANAGING this dog, who is akin to walking around with an assault rifle. Even though Dobermans are easy to train, I realize that you can’t train “out” what was bred “in”. I can only imagine what people would say if I ever put myself out there in public with this dog. His prey drive is so over the top, that it’s so difficult to override.

I give her a lot of credit she has a Belgian Mal I'm an old Nam plus vet Specal forces and I have a Belgian Mal he is 7 months old and he is killing me but he is in my heart and soul he comes from the same blood line as the Mal that took down Ben Laden enough on that part to much said young lady you are great with your Mal

​@@Ponygirl1111 Never seen a american dobie here before. Only euro dobies. All of them have been well socialized and are great dogs. They just need ALOT to be happy dogs. Bikejouring is my number one go to, (if the dog is healthy and in the right age) It create amazing bond and makes the training alot easier. They need an outlet

Fantastic patience Robert - this is how many clients start, frustrated, unengaged, unsure or nervous. They don’t realize all the incorrect things that they are doing until someone helps them.

I remember taking my shepherd to his first training session. IT was such an eye opener to realise that I needed more training than my shepherd. With time and the help of the trainer (plus repeat viewing of videos like this) everything improved, at least 90% of the time... Respect to the lady, she is earning it.

Mr. Cabral you have an amazing channel! I want to thank the owner for letting us see this training session. Unedited REAL interactions and challenges are a priceless learning tool for the whole community.

I hope this lady comes to love her dog and bond with him. She seems completely detached and gives an air of annoyance and irritation. Whiskey, on the other hand, looks a cracking dog. He's upbeat, energetic, friendly and smart, the opposite of his owner. They seem very mismatched.

Good video. I’m glad you basically left it unedited to mistakes. Most people aren’t professionals. The other side of this is the people leave dogs tied out and basically get out of control. Props to her for getting help and having it recorded. Thanks. It helps us all.

Excellent video! Staying calm and bonding with your dog is hard to do when you are frustrated and don't have the tools to get the results you're looking for. I'm glad you gave her the tools she can use to create a fun space to train her dog. Good for her for expanding her knowledge!

Robert is great. As a trainer people who are matched with a dog that doesn’t fit their lifestyle/culture need help. If this matching could have been prevented in the first place that would be ideal and have her be directed to a different breed. Regardless of breed she needed lots of help and makes very common owner mistakes which dogs of any breed will blow off and not take you seriously. It blows my mind that people with limited skill set buy a Malinois. I just don’t understand why people think that makes a good pet. You have to be an exceptional owner/trainer to make a Malinois a good pet. The super hero of dogs doesn’t belong in most people’s homes. I purchased a purebred working line border collie and specifically was looking for a medium energy border collie. That’s what I got and I saw that when I met the litter. Still a working line dog that requires more time and commitment than a lazy house pet dog who is content with a casual walk and cuddling on the couch. It’s just frustrating to see but glad the owner is committed to her dog. What’s worse is people getting these dogs and dumping them at shelters. Very common with working breeds especially German Shepards. Get them when they are cute and get rid of them when they are difficult. My neighbors just got rid of their cattle dog who they would leave in the yard all day since it was a puppy even in winter, below freezing. They finally got sick of the dog. I wanted to rescue that dog. Mindless yard life is not suited for a cattle dog. People wonder why their dog barks all day, digs holes, destroys their property when it is outside all day. Being outside in a yard is not enough mental or physical stimulation for most dogs. I am proud I stopped someone from getting a Malinois. My bf’s mom wanted one after meeting a sweet senior former military K9 bomb detecting Malinois and she wanted a dog just like that. Told her that is definitely not the norm. Those dogs are insane. Plus that dog lived a fulfilling life and had purpose. She rescued a sweet super mutt instead who fits their lifestyle and is wonderful with the grandkids.

People don't understand first you have to train the person before the dog. But I'm glad she seek help.

Kudos to this lady for seeking Roberts help. We all know what dog she has is probably a little much for her. But she she's sought the help of one of the best trainers out there. I look forward in seeing the development of her and the dog. She has an amazing dog and with the right training and with Roberts help she has sought the best possible training she could have. Can't way to see this series. I have learnt a few things from this video myself. ❤

I didn't realise you were filming me LOL I can so relate to this lady. I have a BC that behaves just like this dog. Checks out, distracted, pees on everything, demand barks. It's kind of reassuring to know I am not the only one out there struggling to contain an energetic dog. I know I am too vague at times and it's so hard to get the voice commands firm and not harsh. Good on her for engaging in the training.

Had to watch after seeing your ladt one on the comments she got. I give her tons of credit. Number one she's no worse then 90% pet owners number 2 she's looking for help and willing to do the work. If people didn't know Ivan and you made a video people would bash him. Unfortunately that's the way society is now. Like to see follow up from her down the road. Nice looking dog

For sure. So many cues, he's tuning her out. "Leave it" and then "focus" he barely looked at her, but snatched the treat very habitually. I think then allowing him to get the thing initially he was to leave alone makes it confusing, especially if you end up using "leave it" for passing a dog for example, he may think he only has to leave it temporarily-instead she should give the reward from her and pickup the food she left. Or reward with a tug which being a Mali he would likely love much more lol more value built in her as the handler. I think as well, there was no accountability when he didn't sit the first 2 or 3 times...just a "tssst" sound and command repeated. I think for sure just some clarity tuning up is needed. Most of the time it is a clarity or a motivation issue. I think a little of both here.

There is a reason you don’t see mals at a dog park. Don’t bring your dog to a dog park.

Great training knowledge shared with this lady. She definitely needs guidance. Nobody should bark out commands with anger/frustration which is how this woman initially was to her dog. Whiskey doesn’t listen because proper guidance/training hasn’t been instilled in him *yet*

If you are at level 24 on the ecollar already, either the dog is not ready to be in that environment or he's already highly desensitised to it.

WOW! Five? I had one of those myself. Best dog ever. A handful, tho, but smartest dog I've ever owned hands down. So loveable, too. I'm really impressed that they all listen to you really well. Kudos! Have fun with your doggos. Sadly, mine have all passed away. Still looking for a dog for me. If you know of any Dutch/Mal puppies available ( hopefully free or cheap, I'm on a fixed income) let me know? I have land in rural area, and am an experienced dog owner. The dog would have a good home with lots of love. Also, lots of exercise as we are quite active. Be blessed - cheers! 😀

I am fairly new to dog training and learning so much from Robert here. But I agree with other commenters that it does look like the dog is average excitable, no particularly "aggressive." But to be honest, with the woman's tone of voice, her vocal intonations, just the way she even simply talks to Robert, I'd be anxious and nervous if I had to deal with her (even if that was just a store clerk, I'd try to avoid her and have another clerk help me). Animals, dogs in particular, pick up a lot on their human's personality and energy, and if the human is so snarky, irritated, uneven, sounding hostile etc., no wonder an already upbeat and excitable dog would feel so anxious and aggressive, and would need to release all that pent up stuff, and obviously the only way he can release it is by taking out on other dogs. In fact, in brief initial interactions with Robert the dog seems a bit calmer and more receptive. But i'd give her credit for seeking help. I hope it all works out for the dog.

Poor girl? The Malinois is just being a Malinois. It’s too much dog for her. She doesn’t seem to have a good understanding of dog psychology, and with a dog like that, that’s a problem.

I think he's got the obedience -- he was doing quite well with Robert on the "come". What I'm seeing is a mismatch of energy between her and Whisky. She's got very soft energy, whereas Whisky's (like most mals) is strong,. When she learns how to assert herself with him, I think they'll get somewhere.

Thank you so much for this Robert! I learned so much from this because there is so much I have done too. Asking a question though. The dog seemed to really listen, followed commands and stick by her. But is the danger that it was when it needed to be? I couldn't tell very well if her dog ran to the other dogs? or the dog's distraction as bad because the dog stayed by her side? What was I missing?

Malinois are not for everyone- they take a firm, yet patient and very loving hand. ( Most lovable dogs, ever!) Actually, if a person naturally does not the "pack- leader" mentality, Malinois is really not the breed for them. This breed will get out of control quickly, without proper handling. beautiful fur- missle! I'd take him in a heartbeat! Good luck with Whiskey! It's good that you are reaching out for help with him. Credit where credit is due. I wish the best for the both of you. Robert is the man to go to for help,, I hope the outcome is what you want. I'm going to follow this story. Curious as to if she can get Whiskey in hand.

Really great video showing us actual ecollar levels in real life situations. I’ve been afraid of going higher than 15 on my ecollar (with wing extender) so thanks for thoroughly explaining your technique!!! What ecollar level would you use if the dog is off leash and goes after a squirrel, cat or other animal? My GSD has high prey drive.

Hm, may be i am wrong, but for me he doesn't look hyper, looks with a good settled energy and is waiting for work...? Comparing to my absolute high drive wonderful Dutchy Lady he appears to be calm like my male Dutchy Thinking that these dogs are just faster thinking and acting than other dogs. Their loyalty and willing to please helped me so much to learn how better to communicate. Both dogs are incredibly passionate with me 😂 If you once get used to their speed, you will enjoy it

I know I sound like an asshole, but I will repeat this till the end of time. Why do civilian people with no idea of handling a dog, get a strong drive herder? Start with a basic breed dog, or mutt and build yourself from that point; the fact that these dogs have become popular is a dangerous trend.

I hate to say this, but indiscriminate breeding is a big part of this problem (like most breed problems). I have a feeling that she rescued this dog, and did not seek out a Breeder. There are so many Mals in shelters because of over breeding, breeders not placing pups with knowledgeable owners, and the fact that these dogs were never meant to be pets….they are too much for the average person.

@@Ponygirl1111 while the problem if irresponsible breeding does exist, it appears that too many human mistakes/irresponsible "ownership" are labeled as an example of irresponsible breeding. While I am relatively new to dog training, I am not new to animals, both domestic and wild. And I see it time and time again how an animal's supposed "temperament"/"trait"/"etc. gets blamed for human "mismanagement." Granted, animal temperaments vary just as much as human, but 9 out 10 serious problems in human-animal interactions stem from humans' failure in one way or another. Just like with children: it depends on who raises them and who teaches/trains them.

@@zzc8505 Nature vs Nurture, the truth is its not one or the other. Genetics plays a huge role in health and temperament, but a really good handler can work with bad temperaments and a really bad handler can make a dog with good temperament poorly behaved.

Unfortunately she's bought tools assuming they are the fix. Fortunately she's come to you to help her build a foundation and learn how to communicate with her pup

She needs to bond better with her dog. She doesn't seem like she into her dog .She needs a more pleasant voice. good video

Hi Robbert if I want my dog to come back to me can I use the electric caller I have been putting the collar on shock because the other tones do not seem to be working I have it on low level it doesn’t hurt him but he knows I mean business only if he is on a long line like recall or if he is in the house

To me this just looks like a boring handler, a handler who's never engaged in obedience, and every time he's done anything right it's like the lowest of the low good boy.....

His dog aggression seems very mild, so should take no time to correct

Timing with the other POS shep is CRITICAL. 2 seconds to late and "that DOG lit me up. Ima gonna shred it ! " NOOP. First hint of interest to mutt. Hit it, and head the other way. Not a word ! Had 180 dirt bikes on the farm next door @ 630 AM. All hell got ready to break loose. I nailed her azz and made us scrambled eggs with beef(immediately. US). She's on the porch chilling now/all day watching wheelioes and listening to ringy-dingy KTM's and suff(410 here now... math ?). 5 1/2 month old female Fila.Hmmmjm maybe I should have gone on ebay for dirt bike parts, opened the gate and told her CATCH ! LOL. She will, in a heartbeat. Timing. 3 idiots were pulling in at 640 or so and I did the "correction" dozens followed. Didn't even look. Farted a couple times tho....lol

I'm glad she's getting help, she shouldn't have a Malinois; her personality doesn't meld well with one.

Also, was this dog walked or released any energy prior to this session? That would have been helpful

Clearly this dog gets on her nerves. I wish people would do their research before purchasing or adopting certain breeds. This dog needs to work. He needs to be doing mental stimulation and some kind of physical activity every single day. It's almost cruel to try to change him into an English Labrador that will be on the lazy side. I know she is trying to help her dog, I am hoping she gets him into agility or something.

She’s the problem. No control, no authority

Question- should I continue using a slip lead if my dog shuts down and is too sensetive to it. Have you ever heard of this problem. He is a 5 yr old working line gsd. He really opens up and has fun on a flat collar. There has been no negative experience with the slip lead. I think he is just hyper sensetive to the feeling of it. He even becomes severely aggresive when I put it on and then he just shuts down. Would love to hear your opinion 🤔

Slip leads hurt tracheas. If he doesn't need it, why are you insistent on using it? Try just a flat collar or if you really need some corrections just a prong or an ecollar if your dog is shutting down like that.

@@s.b.5259 that's what I thought. I use Beckmans training now since I can't get an e collar or prong. But reactivity is still hard to battle with just a flat collar. I have never heard of anyone with the same problem and was curious if it's normal for him to shut down.

@@Valethea don't need it for pulling. Only for reactivity. I have never heard of a dog shut down from such a widely used equipment. I just wanted to know if it's normal. Thanks for letting me know ur experience.

I think you already know the answer. Stop using the slip lead. If you need more control, use a double lead on a harness and the flat collar. Lot's of dogs shut down with slip leads and even Martingale collars, plenty of dogs hate harnesses and will run and hide when you even show it to them. Do what works for your dog.

Do not use a prong collar, all you have to use is a slip collar properly and correct your dog at the appropriate time.

I’m surprised he hasn’t bitten her seriously yet. She’s in over her head with this dog. He’s stressed out and she’s anxious. He’s actually very well tempered and no where near as wired as other BM we’ve seen on here.

She is a beginner - and a really good one - taking responsibility for her dog This responsibility is missing by the most of the other owners even if they are with another kind of dogs

Handler is in way over her head. She should’ve bought a Camry but got a Ferrari. Dominant, intact, higher drive dog. Yeesh. Im glad she found an amazing trainer - for her sake and Whiskey’s.

She's frustrated which is why she's done the right thing and hired a professional to show her a better way. Remember - people usually only seek help when they reach a crisis point.

For starters, this is not an agressive dog !! You should see my German Shepherd in terms of other dogs , this dog is nothing!!! Secondly, this woman shouldn't have been put on camera, clearly she is nervous and is tryiing her best to show that she has trained the dog to the best of her ability to thousands of people! Of course she would be nervous and with such a big dog( and supposedly challenging) not a good idea to go on camera.

What an angry woman. Why does she have a mal? Seems like she just wanted a big, immobile, boring dog to show off. She should have gotten a stuffed animal. Hes obedient, but frustrated because she hasn't given him a job to channel all of that maliness into. That's just a lot of lightning she's trying to keep in a tiny bottle, no wonder he doesn't want a relationship with her. She's annoying!

wrong dog, wrong home but lets see what 30 days does, lol. He is not obedient, almost every command is repeated and broken before released, lol. Time to go back inside and start over....very bad training here, im disgusted robert is using an ecollar with this case...negligent.

@@ABCdogtraining802 id wager a bet that he's literally never been introduced into the concept of a break lol. He obeys readily when he thinks something is worth doing though, which is what I meant by obedient, that and I was surprised by him almost wanting to stay near the lady. She's got a good dog there, if she developed a relationship with him and worked with him rather than just trying to tamp down any behaviors he has besides "quietly exist by my side"

She is the kind of woman who should have a yorkie, imo. That's a powerful dog and she is going to be the cause of some other poor dog or a person getting hurt.

@@kat7011 a fabulous trainer would be inside the home re training this dog on a flat collar or slip lead....the dog is clearly not ready for distractions and impliminting an ecollor on top of crap obedience and engagement is negligent. she wants to help the dog, which i love...but she must start over...inside.

Oh come on, you don't have to get a lap dog. Her personality is better fit for labs, retrievers, spaniels, but that describes most people.

Anna Bell. that would be one poor yorkie. The woman appears to be overall an anxious, aggravated kind of person, even as she talks to Robert, her voice sounds that way. That would be one nervous yapping yorkie

it's amazing how clueless the owners are just watching her interact with the dog and talk with the dog is all wrong. She repeats her self and her hole tool setup on the dog is wrong. she never read a dog training book. you don't need a trainer ladies and gentleman u can do it yourself read the books and apply what you read to the dog

I don't think it is a good way for a dog aggressive dog to use an e-collar to make it uncomfortable for him to meet other dogs. It might increase his aggression in the long run. By the way, that dog doesn't even look dog aggressive to me, only interested, which ist only natural as it is his own species. Obeying commands and socialisation with other dogs are two different things. E-collars definitivly don't help with socialisation and there are better ways to teach a dog to obey commands.

Even her positive reinforcing gestures are whiny. The dog is fine, put the e-collar on her...

This woman only has 1/2 a clue...! She's likely incapable for this dog...! Maybe get a retriever of some sort...! A police dog's wrong for her...!

@@RobertCabralDogs They are one of the breeds used worldwide for that required innate drive like German Shepard, Dobbies, Rotties, Heelers - I've worked with'em all and sometimes all at the same time and not all my dogs...! They need a serious person that connects with them the way their nature requires...! I'm sure you know what I mean...she's had 3yrs and is more lost then the poor dog(beautiful animal)...! Maybe she can be brought to the understanding needed and possibly be able to walk in it tho doesn't seem likely...! Wish them all the luck but it takes alot more then that...!

​@Ponygirl1111 Yes, Malinois aren't magical beings who are very different from other breeds. Malinois are just dogs who require more mental and physical stimulation than other breeds. They require a bit more work than other breeds, but that's what makes breeds different from each other.

@@TheWorkingAussie In my understanding, these aren’t just run of the mill canines. Most canines can not leap 12-14” in the air backwards nor scale a 20” wall, but I’ve seen Mals accomplish this on a Monday! They are known for all of the attributes that single them out, to excel in military and law enforcement. This is no ordinary canine, and the breed fans probably would be offended if someone told them that they were not much different from most breeds. You made that statement and then listed 3 very important things that they need more of than other breeds….physical and mental stimulation, exercise and WORK!! These things can be challenging to fulfill in any canine, and most people just want a dog, a buddy, a companion….they don’t necessarily bargain for that dog to require so much more than they have to offer. I’ve worked with horses my entire life, and I would gladly spend my day with the rankest thoroughbred than an entire day in public with my Euro Dobi!!! It would be less exhausting and stressful!! No joke!

is this dog e-collar trained?...so many mistakes, not even fair to have this dog outside, let alone use an ecollar, wow. e collars are to finish and proof, there is clearly multiple and basic training issues here. start over.

You're a bad owner, how should never own a dog like this, you can't even say Whiskey come in the right tone.
