Does Wet Cleaning Shrink Comic Book Pages?!

All Star Comics 55 Conservation Episode 6: Cover and Interior Wraps deacidification and paper mending results.
In this video we continue a Golden Age Comic Book conservation project on this copy of All Star Comics #55 from 1950. We review our progress so far and then look at results from the comic book inner wraps aqueous submersion bath. Then we review results for wet cleaning, deacidification, tear seals, and spine reinforcement of the cover! Most importantly, we re-measure the cover after all of our conservation efforts to see if we've had any dimensional changes to the paper before reassembly.
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

Looks really great 👍 I would have never thought leaving the Tengujo accross the window on the spine would get you a "Restored" grade. Good information all around.

Tengujo is really a magic tissue. Your cover looks almost brand new. And you did lighten the tan quite a bit. Great job, Dr Paul.

@@ajrilo1776 no it does not. You’ll note that even in my H2O2 solution I have Ca(OH) present. For a deeper dive on the composition and chemistry of pulp paper, its aging, and how oxidizing treatments such as H2O2 followed by Ca(OH) can stabilize aging pulp paper, check out this video: Comic Book Light Bleaching Guide! kzread.info/dash/bejne/doulydl9aauraNo.html
