it is good trailer tho it almost... almost gives me hope. maybe the history is fanfic but if the gameplay is good, just mix Sekiro's movement/prosthetic tools and Tsushima's open world and the game should be amazing. we just may get good open combat in this game, why is it so hard to make good combat ubi why?

His background as a warrior slave in india and him participating in 2 known battles, Nijo castle and Tenmokuzan(according to ietadas diary) shows that. @@Smokey348 I'm saying ever since the game was revealed there has been an ongoing edit war on the wikipedia page of Yasuke trying to cement the narrative about him not being a "samurai" even though most historians seemed to agree that outside of some very specific technicalities of what it means to be a samurai in different time periods (since who could be considered one did change during Japan's history), Yasuke could be considered a samurai while under Nobunaga's service. So I do tend to think people who are very invested in heavily downplaying that seem to be more motivated to create a narrative rather than faithfulness to history.

Funny thing: There are very few historic sources describing Yosuke as a samurai, mostly just a notes from missionaries. And even if he was a samurai, he totaly did not learnt their ways and become honorable among them. You see, the true story is that Yasuke was a slave brought to Japan by foreign merchants and since Japan was very isolated (there were periods of time where Japan was completly isolated from the other world and the rulers strictly prohibited traveling there.), a black man for japanese people was something extremly new and exotic. So the ruler bough (or recieved him as a gift) Yasuke and most probably made him samurai so he could keep him close, since someone as high as ruler could not spend time with a servant. He was just a toy for him. Forcing Yasuke into the game just feels weird. There are tons of Japanese folk heroes and they chose the least japanese one out of them.

You have to check the post from Ubisoft Japan. The Japanese fans are absolutely destroying it from bottom to top. Also, Yasuke was never a Samurai. He was mentioned once or twice and that was it. This is an excerpt from Akechi-sama about him after the fall of Oda Nobunaga: "Fróis wrote in the annual report of the Jesuits: The black man understood a little Japanese, and Nobunaga never tired of talking with him. And because he was strong and could do a few tricks, Nobunaga took great pleasure in protecting him and had him roam around the city of Kyoto with an attendant. Some people in the town thought that Nobunaga might make him as tono ("lord") A black man whom the visitor [Valignano] sent to Nobunaga went to the house of Nobunaga's son after his death and was fighting for quite a long time, when a vassal of Akechi approached him and said, 'Do not be afraid, give me that sword', so he gave him the sword. The vassal asked Akechi what should be done with the black man, and he said, *'A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in Portugal."* So yeah, the guy's role is not even miniscule. Its nonexistent. Rather than someone like Hattori Hanzo or Nobuyasu or great other legendary Samurai's with long written battles and achievements, hundreds of Servants, large and massive Fiefdoms making them right of the title of Samurai, they picked the guy with little to no history. (They admitted to this at 4:26)

Perfect proof is that alot of ppl say nobunaga's faction are the villains if so then it makes sense especially going by the excerpt you quoted. I mean, besides it being Ubi, can you really blame people for hating the protagonists? People don't hate to see a black protagonist, they hate that he was only chosen as protagonist to force more inclusivity into the game. I read into Yasuke's history a bit and what is shown in popular media could not be farther from the truth (I hope I got everything correct, if not feel free to correct me): He wasn't a samurai, he was never trained in combat. He never actually fought in a battle. The Jesuits showed him to Oda Nobunaga who was intrigued because Yasuke was very tall, muscular and above all of black skin colour. There is no sugarcoating it. Oda made him is sword bearer, meaning he would carry Oda's sword and stay by his side constantly. In battle, Yasuke still stayed by his lord, far away from the battlefield and outside of any combat. Then after mere months, Oda died, Yasuke stayed with Oda's son but the castle where they stayed got conquered and after the battle he got returned to the Jesuits (because the victorious warlod basically said "he is not a man but an animal, so he should be sent to the Jesuits"). That's it. That's the bleak historic, factual truth: Nobunaga kept him by his side and gave him titles because Yasuke was an exotic never-before-seen foreigner, basically a walking trophy or pet. Did Yasuke learn much about Japan and Samurai? Yeah probably. And his story is still interesting. But to portray him as this heroic black samurai figure is just factually wrong and having him be a protagonist in a Japan-AC could be seen as an insult to Japanese culture. Technically, the same goes for the other protagonist being a woman but that's a discussion I don't want to start or participate in. The thing is: Do people hate a story where Yasuke is this intriguing figure learning the ways of the samurai? No, that would make for a cool story. What people hate is that this is a pretty obvious inclusivity type of thing and Ubi with their "team of experts in history, religion and culture" says that they want to show us Yasuke's "real" history where in fact they just write an a-historical fiction about him. If they made a completely new game that doesn't belong to the "semi-realistic/authentic" AC franchise (well, before they went full on magic spellslinging at least) and this game would be marketed as a fictional expansion of Yasuke's story, a sort of "what if" scenario, people would have zero problems with it.

@@TheHoundOfAnubis Edward being the protagonist is absolutely not a problem. Black Flag is centered around Carribbean pirates (which historically existed)... so of course he is a European sailor/pirate... Regarding AC Valhala: Yeah, the trend of overdoing it with the fantasy aspects has existed in all the newer games (starting with Origins), I don't like that either. But that doesn't mean people can't complain about the new AC game. You fail to misunderstand the problem I think. It's *not* that AC isn't 100% historically accurate! But the core concept of the AC games has always been to take a historicically accurate setting and use historical figures for side characters or antagonists, while keeping their basic lives and actions relatively accurate, AND THEN injecting the subtle fantasy and magic elements into it that slightly alter historical events and people. AC is, at its core, not just a fantasy game. You can compare it to the old Indiana Jones movies: Yes, magic and supernatural things exists (the Ark, the Holy Grail and so on) but the setting itself is a "realistic" down-to-earth historical action setting. Indy doesn't fling spells like Dumbledore, despite the fact that magic exists in the background. Just like the (old) AC games, I would describe the setting as "historical with sublte alternate reality fantasy aspects" and not just as "alternate history fantasy". The Apples of Eden are that subtle magic that is added into the historical setting, Yasuke however is a fundamentally wrong portrayal of historical events, clearly for the sake of diversity alone... all while the developers claim their portrayal of Yasuke is historically accurate. I hope it's clear what I mean with this. Basically what they are doing with Yasuke is a different kind of "historical inaccuracy" than the Isu and Apples and so on, and this, coupled with people being fed up about forced diversity, is what gets people so riled up.

@@lordhelmchen3154 Thought I'd chip in... You have been one of the few rational people that have had the best take on all this, and explained it very well. Everyone knows why this whole thing is problematic but either pretend to ignore facts, or just recycle toddler-level twitter takes they have heard to act all moral as if they like it. The whole "fantasy stuff always existed in AC so why be upset now about a black dude???" is such a bad argument. Even Ubisoft in one of their promotional videos said the historical accuracy and culture was key to portray well. So Ubisoft are still claiming to try and be historically accurate. In older games, all of the fantasy or sci-fi stuff was well woven into the genuine care they had put into making the world, characters and historical things come to life. (Admittedly after making the games RPG's they went too far with the fantasy elements at the expense of realism/immersion). This is absolutely a desperate stretch of a handful of brief records to "historically" justify their main character being black for diversity reasons only. The same reasons these dodgy companies have done it with many other movies/shows/games/documentaries etc. in the past. Also if they make the main character black, even if it is silly for the game, the can use it as an excuse to blame critics for being racist, and ignore any valid criticism. Movies and shows have done this for a while (mostly Disney). They're getting everyone arguing so they can sneak their $129 game into releasing. Does anyone actually think these ultra-greedy companies genuinely care? No. It's amazing that people are defending this scummy company. It is in all essence "woke." But this word has been villanised to a point where if you even use it you are seen as cringe. It is "woke" vs "anit-woke" and both sides are pretty stupid, but you can't seem to make valid points without being cringed at or labelled for making a point. It's a fascinating phenomenon. And rather dangerous. One side can push something ridiculous or even harmful, but sprinkle in special nice words, or deflect, that no one could possibly argue against without being seen as a bad person. And they keep getting away with it, have done for years. There is also the huge issue with diversity and representation being if you deliberately choose someone of a specific race for diversity/representation reasons you are now representing that whole race and so HAVE to write the character in a way that reflects that. Therefore, the character is ALWAYS meant to be charismatic or likable, very talented and capable, and very little bad happens to them. Keep an eye out for it and you'll see what I mean. By ignoring diversity and representation you have creative freedom to write any character you want and make them interesting, because you aren't tied to anything political. It's seriously why many recent movies and shows have sucked. I kinda just wish people chilled out about DEI stuff and just went back to focusing on good writing, immersion, and gameplay. Now it is certainly all corporate bs, virtue signaling, and greed. Thanks for the discussion, and I hope things change one day, but till then stay perceptive, intelligent, and kind! All the best mate! :)

I did some proper research, yasuke was not an official samurai as that requires a social hierarchy but people are saying he was just a water boy which is just not true and downplays yasukes significance. Nobunaga bought Yasuke as a slave and had him trained. On record He was a hard worker and gained the trust of many. Nobunaga is the first samurai to almost conquer the whole of Japan and he appointed Yasuke as his retainer. In Japan to be a retainer means you were very respected and trusted. Regardless of that, on record Yasuke was given a higher rank than most Japanese warriors at the time and was given the right to own property along with his own personal katanas which is a huge privilege. Yasuke was his personal bodyguard the day nobunaga was assassinated in the fire and was captured under suspicion of nobunagas murder but released due to their trust in him. ^^ and that is all on record. There is no record after his release but since nobunaga was assassinated and he was his retainer I assumed he lost his job or became an insignificant low rank warrior. Whether yasuke was a samurai or not, his real story is great and to gain trust on that scale must mean he was a very skilled warrior. Bro was officially appointed a higher rank than the average warrior but yall still wanna call him a water boy… Edit: also the name “Yasuke” was given to him by oda nobunaga be wise Yasuke didn’t have a prior name.

Of course Ubisoft resorts to cultural appropriation by using an African protagonist for their game that’s supposed to represent Japanese culture. Yes, Yasuke was a real person, but he was no assassin. Unfortunately, he was more of an exotic attraction to the Japanese people, who did not respect him in the slightest.

And also how we don’t get to play as a Japanese man in a game set in feudal Japan. If i was Japanese and saw that this is how my culture is being represented then i’d be mad too. If they wanted to make an AC game with a black protagonist then they should’ve made a game set in Africa, that would’ve been dope

It's silly to insist he wasn't a samurai. Sure, it's not 100% proven that he was one, but most of the historical evidence points towards him being one. I have no idea how anyone could conclude that he definetly could not have been. The Shinchōkōki describes him as being under Nobunaga fuchi, which is a warrior employed by a stipend. If you look at the rest of the Shinchōkōki, every single use of the word "stipend", without exception, was in reference to paying samurai. There is no reason to think that Ōta Gyūichi suddenly started using that word differently when talking about Yasuke. He was given a samurai's stipend, he was given a decorated sword, and he was given a residence. The most likely explanation is that he was a samurai

he wasn’t a samurai in the sense we think of it as. samurai’s are like knights they are a class of people, you couldn’t just become a knight. in yasuke’s case he was a literal slave brought from the portuguese jesuit’s when they first arrived in like the late 1500s early 1600s during the unification period of the sengoku era. They went to oda and oda was literally fascinated by yasuke and his black skin, bro made him run his skin to see if the black would come off. he became a bodyguard and pretty much just stayed with oda the entirety of his life and moved up the court like that. if anything he’s an honorary samurai which is like getting a PHD when you never even went to college. dude has a cool life but they always fuck his story around fronweied diversity points and never touch on the fact he was a slave who found liberation.

@@flwrptl9737 Generally that's correct, samurai were a class of people, mainly hereditary, but there were exceptions. There are other examples of foreigners, who were not originally part of the "samurai class" that were able to improve their standing in Japanese society and make their way into the samurai class. One of the first of these was the English sailor, William Adams, but there are also cases of Dutch and Italians becoming samurai. You don't need to be born into the class, you can be accepted into it. I don't think it's fair to call it an "honourary" position either when he did fight, being described as having the strength of 10 men
