    What happened was there were two shorted cells in the pack. I used to have a capacitator discharge unit that would remove the shorts in some cells like this and then the charger generally would be able to recharge the whole pack to full voltage and not have any bad cells. The circuit was a very simple thing that charged a capacitator to about double the working voltage of the battery pack and then I would switch the circuit from charge to discharge through the battery. It sometimes required multiple cycles but was generally quicker and more reliable than disassembling the pack and trying to recover one cell at a time. I used this device on hundreds of 2 way radios that were used commercially and it extended the majority of the battery packs to double or triple the full life of the Nickel Cadmium battery packs and saved the company thousands of dollars yearly. Keep up the good work on helping recover battery packs.

    Correct... old school nickel chemistry cells (particularly nicads) will develop internal shorts due to age or stress (discharging frequently to zero volts)... I have frequently recovered such cells by "zapping" them with a relatively high voltage, high current power supply. The shorts are literally blasted away using this process. Obviously care must be taken when doing this, and I certainly don't recommend it to people not familiar with what is happening. Unfortunately, when cells get to this point the recovery is typically temporary as shorts will re-develop quickly...

    I brought 18v 20v li-on battery, charger and adapter to fit my old nicad Black n Decker, adapter for old nicad Dewalt. The new li-on battery fits new Black n Decker, Stanley and now have brought angle grinder. WOW all my old power tools are re-lifed with li-on battery. I am cautious not to run li-on down too low before charging but a far superior battery that holds its charge ready to go.

    This is very smart. I am not an electrical genius but I do know that the principle here is hooking the D cell in parallel which forces the current to equalize between the 2 batteries and flow into the dead cell. This re-activates the dead cell and then it will take a charge from the regular charger again. Normally, the batteries are all connected in series which has a different electrical flow pattern which just ignores dead cells. The trick is getting a parallel hookup, which does not drain into the other cells, there is no need to disconnect them from the pack. This is a great way to get dead cells up and running again. A bit tedious no doubt for some, but very interesting. Thanks.

    The principle of ‘re-activating’ a ‘dead’ cell by transferring charge demonstrated here is the same principle used to dynamically balance the charging and discharging of battery banks during their use. Anyone interested in getting the manufacturers life charge/discharge claims of a single battery used with others in a battery bank will appreciate the utility of charge balancing circuitry. This is especially true for lead acid batteries used in solar power energy storage where under charging and overcharging phenomenon gets worse with each charge/discharge cycle. The battery bank will sustain damage if some batteries are discharged below the recommended lower limit, which is certainty without charge balancing , and also occurs when some batteries are overcharge and become overheated. Dynamic balancing circuits are relatively simple circuits that either use an extra battery or a capacitor or super capacitor in exactly the same manner as shown in this video with the ‘dry’ cell only done much faster and continuously for each cell one-at-a-time during the discharging or charging of the battery bank. A dynamic charge balancer will allow the same reliability of the entire bank as that claimed by the manufacturer for a single cell. It is a small wonder that they are not ubiquitous and well known within the solar community. Dynamic balancers should not be confused with static charging balancers:two very different fish.

  • @houseman4906

    @houseman4906

    Exactly! The good thing of Lithium charger is that they monitor individual battery's health by BMS. Pb or Ni-MH system do not have that charging principle. This video takes care of every cell.

  • @terryharris3393

    @terryharris3393

    @@houseman4906 not every BMS is a dynamic balancer but lithium iron phosphate cells used in vehicles certainly have DB. DIY solar storage or even professionally installed systems may have a BMS but few if any have dynamic balancing because there are few sources for the hardware and the DB hardware available is limited to mostly 24V battery banks, although they can be used at 48V with reduced reliability and increased complexity in installation. With proper design and component selection it is theoretically possible to balance any number of cells in a battery bank made up of any number of parallel and series cells. All that’s needed is the market to drive the investment in the manufacturing. As I last year the only source of hardware I know of was in China. TDB

    Interesting. In my work I have come across UK trucks with 24V systems using two 12V batteries in series. We needed 12V for a component and took power from one battery but had to fit a unit called a battery equaliser which took the same load from the other battery. Otherwise our load would slowly discharge its battery and the alternator would not catch it back up again. Seemed as if it stopped charging when the other battery was full regardless of the state of "our" battery. Maybe you have a similar situation with some batteries (maybe older than the rest) discharging faster and not getting fully charged?

It would stand to reason through that it would measure all of them but I guess his way worked. Now I'll have to try one of these ways on my Craftsman 13 volt that both batteries died within a year after I bought it. My brother in laws did the same thing.

It is my second try in the video as I didn’t use my drill regularly. If you use yours every now and then, it would keep the voltage up, you would be fine. It’s worth to try.

Once it reaches 3.7V, you can put it back to normal charging. More about charging batteries, you can watch the latest video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnp51NBrdM-5Z84.html

    Questions. (1) If you are reviving individual cells, why don't you unsolder the cells apart? When connected together, isn't the current going into all the cells? (2) Why use a single D cell? If there is not a lot of current involved, why not use an AC charger? (3) Wouldn't it make more sense to replace bad cells with new ones, since those bad cells will die again soon? Aren't you just delaying the inevitable? In my time as a TV engineer, I had to test and replace rechargeable cells in news photographer's battery packs. (Back when cameras were all analog and recorded on videotape.) If a cell went bad in those heavy battery belts, we threw it away and soldered in a replacement. That makes more sense than using electroshock to give a bad cell ten more minutes of life.

  • @houseman4906

    @houseman4906

    Thanks to your professional comment. This method is the easiest way to retrieve batteries that is not dead, without the need to disconnect them. Provided that the voltage between cells are similar, there is not much current flow between them. Using a D cell is more convenient and easier to connect than some AC charger with 5.5 mm or 3.5mm plugs. Of course, some charger with varies wires and connectors would also be a choice. If the batteries are very old or don't hold charge, ie. voltage keeps dropping while you test them, the batteries will die again in short time. In that case, change the bad cell would be the only choice. Since the price of most cordless drills is all about the battery. Sometimes a drill including a battery could cost you double more than another one without it. This video is to inspire people who want to keep their battery with may be only one or two cells are faulty.

    Car battery has huge capacity, can't use a single dry cell to raise it's voltage. What you may try is to use a steady electrical charger (at 14.4V) to charge it up, it takes hours to do so even the battery is healthy.

    To test lithium battery, you can also use the same method. The circuit board is there to manage the charging and discharging, with temperature control as well. You can either test individual battery directly. The fully charged voltage is 4.2V, minimum is 3.7V. Any voltage below 3.7V would prevent the battery from charging that is apparently "dead". You can use a 5V supply with 300mA to 500mA current to "activate" it. or you can replace the faulty one easily if it is a 18650 type battery. Beware the polarity of battery and don't short circuit any part as Lithium battery is very high power when fully charged. Good luck.

    Wow, ok so thank you very much for the info! I’ve read pretty far down the comments and I feel like some people may be missing the point a bit. Yes, replacing the problem cells is of course the better idea, HOWEVER. . . Anyone that has used such a tool to make a living will agree that battery packs tend to leave you hanging at the worst possible moments. I couldn’t say hot many times I only needed to drill a couple more holes when my drill just dies and the backups haven’t charged at all. Amazon isn’t going to save me an extra trip the following day to finish that job, is it? And of course finding a store that sells anything affordable at the end of the workday during rush hour isn’t always even a possibility. Anyway, about voltage test accuracy questions, as long as all the individual batteries are connected in series, and disconnected from the load (drill) each battery is practically isolated from the others. If there was a charge indicator led or active Battery Management System in the circuit that allowed some current flow, his voltmeter will read everything just fine. Certainly “accurate enough” for what he is showing us anyway. Once again, thank you for posting this, I cannot wait to make good use of this knowledge next time I’m in a jam. And yes, I understand it may not work in some cases. But it just might work and save me or someone else a lot of time and money and stress! 👍🏼

    I’ve tried to recharge dead batteries like this, but these bad batteries do not hold charge for long. The battery pack will quickly run out after a few screws. The reason that these dead batteries have zero volts is because internally, there is a leakage ghat drains the battery. You can not really fix the dead ones. If there were still some residual voltage left, then you may recharge it and it will hold the charge.

    Ni-Cd batteries should be discharged to .85 volt per cell (8.5 volts for a 10 cell, 12 volt pack) for storage. Why do you think these cells/packs are sold/shipped discharged? To prevent charge memory from forming. Once a NI-Cd cell begins to form a charge memory they will not take a full charge, only taking what it remembers. I have 35 years working with rechargeable batteries. The only way to save that battery pack is to rebuild it. What you are doing is fooling the dumb charger (that is what that type of charger is called) into thinking that the pack is charged while all you are doing is just over charging the few good cells that are left, leading them to failure. If you put that pack on a smart charger, it would, very likely, give you a message such as "Connection Break" or "Internal Short" or it will just not go into charge mode at all (this depends on the smart charger that you are using).

    Sorry to see your comment. I was not an expert in trimming videos a year ago. Some more recent videos are better edited eg. 5 minutes andriod phone main board replacement. DIY you can do kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2Z_z7ail5zIpto.html

    How do you justify 23.21 minutes for this? I refuse to watch any videos that gives limited information longer than three minutes. Exploitative and stupid.
