Does this MLB star ACTUALLY hate baseball...

Спорт

Another press conference, another Anthony Rendon comment uproar. He doesn't seem to be enjoying baseball much, but the real question is... does he HATE it?

If I ran the team, I'd demote him to A-ball and he can either play in a league where he rides the bus or he can give back his salary. If he's going to screw the team, I'm going to return the favor, especially at $38.5M/year which beyond just the money, although significant alone, his contract also hurts the level of talent that can be put on the field as budgets can't be limitless, as well as the chemistry of the clubhouse knowing he alone is guaranteeing failure. His childish behavior and greed is literally guaranteeing Mike Trout either has to request a trade or never see the postseason again in his career, which is sad for Trout, but even worse for baseball, as we all want to see the biggest stars in the biggest moments. Without Rendon and his bloated contract it would be a challenge to overcome Seattle, Houston, and Texas, but his cost makes it impossible for the next few years, after which Trout will be reaching the end of his career where his own contract will hurt the level of talent that can be put on the field.

Jokic is a perfect example of the other side. He has also made comments about his sport being a job. His quote was "its my job. Nobody likes their job." But he plays every game and puts in the effort, it never looks like he's not giving his all and nobody knocks him for "not loving the game" like they do with Rendon. If Rendon said "you know, I love baseball, I love playing the game. But it is a job for me. The grind gets to me sometimes, but while I'm getting paid, I will give it my all. I understand the frustration over my injuries, I'm frustrated, too. I just have to do some different things so I can show up to work every day healthy. " He says this, and it's not a story.

@@TrevorMayBaseball Rendon may like baseball more than the current commissioner and the A's owner combined, but boy, he sounds like someone who just DGAF when talking to the media, and thinking his snide answers make him look cool and smart, when they just make him look like the kind of entitled jerk he claimed was into the "Hollywood Lifestyle". There are a lot of ways to answer the question, and Rendon managed to find the most incendiary and out of touch way to do it. I get it, it's sometimes a grind to have to sit there and answer media's often dumb questions. But come on, he made this choice, just like when decided to take a swing at a fan last season.

While I’d agree that most people don’t love their jobs, I think an important distinction here is that Rendon isn’t commiserating with his colleagues…he’s essentially complaining to customers. I’m sure the last thing Angels season ticket holders want to hear is the second highest paid player on the team dish out comments like Rendon does. He’s entitled to feel how he feels, no question…but saying “zig” when saying “zag” would be better for your team is just simply not being a very good teammate.

With Rendon, that devotion seems missing. Whether that’s fair or not, Rendon should avoid those sorts of comments. If the guy really is miserable, he should retire. There’s no point in faking it.

Lots and lots of people find themselves doing jobs they're not fully committed to. Maybe they're good at it, maybe they just fell into it, but they have to keep doing it. There's two differences between Rendon and the tens of millions of similarly situated Americans. 1. Nobody's interviewing us daily about what we did, how we felt, what we're thinking, every day. He's got that spotlight on him. 2. Nobody much cares if you're good at programming or plumbing or anything else, so long as you're there when you're needed. By contrast, tens of millions (ok, millions) of American, Dominican, Japanese, Cuban, etc boys grow up wishing they had the shot to play baseball. He got it, and is good at it, and conveys that he doesn't respect the game or his talents. That offends folks who don't have his talents. Great pod, thanks for what you do

If Anthony Rendon doesn’t absolutely love playing the game of baseball with his whole heart, that’s completely fine. I expect athletes to have priorities and interests outside of their sport. Ultimately, it is indeed a job, and his faith and family should come first. HOWEVER, what’s NOT fine is to be blasé, checked out, and outright disdainful toward the thing that affords him the life he has. The crux of this is not merely a communication issue; It’s a character issue. Communication is downstream from character, and what he has revealed through his communication, both his words and actions, is that he does not feel a sense of responsibility to anyone but himself, which is a slap in the face to everyone who gives a shit about the team. Rendon doesn’t need to love the Angels or baseball as much as the most fervent fan, but he needs to respect that others do.

The part of Anthony's dilemma that I can personally relate to is the understanding that things that may come with our jobs might hinder your overall view of that job. I've umpired at a professional level and until I reached that level, I didn't know how much the grind of traveling, living in and out of hotels, and being away from your family for months would affect me. Just because you may be in an envious position compared to others does not mean that you are as happy with it as people believe they would be. Anthony needs to honor his commitment to his teammates, and everyone involved with the Angels organization including the fanbase. I just hope if he feels he can't he walks away before it takes a toll on his mental health. He deserves to be happy and if he can't find happiness due to his job then it may be best for him to leave that job.

I also feel that it has to be said that when you make the kind of money pro athletes make, you have to be professional about it when it comes to the media. You can deal with the ups and downs and lack of motivation that will come and go but you owe it to the people that pay your salary (the fans) and in my business the people who rely on my dedication to provide for their families to come in every day giving it my all, even if I’m having a bad day, bad week or a bad freakin year.

That said, I think the only way he gets some people back on his side is if he’s a bit more transparent. Like all these one liner, sound bite quotes are really inflammatory but deep down his comment is basically he loves his kids, loves his life, and doesn’t want his job to come between that. I can’t blame him for that. It certainly doesn’t help him playing for the Angels right now either. It’s a huge media town, big stars, and an historic lack of success. Ultimately the contract he has is representative of his work and performance previously and he’s obviously been working hard to get to where he’s been. Hope he finds what he’s looking for.

I was a pretty good player but I had a toxic coach that made me hate the game. He told me that I had to be obsessed and play year round in order to be great and it made the game not fun anymore. My friends dad is a part owner of a minor league team in the orioles organization and those players have a tough lifestyle being on the road all the time. Look at Michael Phelps and the mental health issues he's had from pursuing his dream of being the best swimmer on the planet and the dedication and work it took to get to that level and the toll it takes. Everyone needs balance in their lives and that includes professional athletes and not everyone needs to be obsessed in order to be great at a sport.

I can appreciate your perspective, and I’m sure it’s at the very least correct to an extent. With that said, I would like to see Anthony Rendon do one of two things: 1. Put in 100% effort. There is not a fiber in my body that believes he is putting forth his best effort to stay on the field and perform. At least then he can argue that he gives a shit about his job and those who it affects, regardless of whether or not it is his top priority. If he can’t do that, 2. Retire. If you’re going to do something, do it with 100% effort. If you’re not, don’t do that thing.

Hey Trevor May - big Twins fans and miss seeing you on the squad... in regards to the video I would say he should always be willing to give 90-100% of his efforts (ideally 100%) if he's being paid a professional big league contract. It's only fair to the fans. That doesn't have to mean he likes it or is totally into it as its understandable it is a job and giving up your whole spring, summer, and part of fall for a dedicated job that takes all your time is a lot. But you're playing a game. A game that you had to have loved since you were a kid otherwise you wouldn't be where you are. If it gets too much to dedicate all that time and effort to be at least 90% into it when you're playing than I say you should hang it up and enjoy your earnings, family, and retirement

I remember you talking in a Twitch stream a couple years ago that you didn't like that there were 162 games in a season/the season is too long, isn't that the same as some of Rendon's comments?

The sandlot Smalls: “to me baseball was a game. But to Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez… baseball was life.” Rendon got paid money for being a select few of elite players who could do what he was capable of doing. He is not producing or even playing to his potential. That’s a big reason for the backlash. If he was slugging 35 HR driving in 110 in 145plus games, and he made those comments, the reaction would be more shocked I think.

Rendon is saying and, probably feeling, what MOST working people in the US feel. I am here so I dont get fined. I am good at this job and here to collect paychecks. TBF, we don't need to feel every emotion we have imagined and idolized and made to feel via books, movies, etc, for what we label as regular jobs from our POV.

If a player wants to retire and has a year or years left on his contract, is the team obligated to pay him his full contract money or can he just leave the remaining money owed on the table? Is there usually verbiage in the contract that usually spells out the above scenario's?

Great video as always Trev. Gives context. I can totally understand if Rendon doesn’t love playing and being in the bigs, but it probably feels like a huge kick in the nuts for Angels fans, especially when they already can’t stand their owner, and just said goodbye to Ohtani. I’m biased (being a Phils fan), but getting to root for a player like Bryce Harper, who is so intensely competitive and dedicated to the game, is awesome. As a fan, you just know that you’re getting 100% from him at all times. If Rendon were on my favorite team, it would be deflating. Like, why should I root for my team to win if he doesn’t give a shit one way or the other?

I think Rendon would do well to clarify that, his personal feelings aside, when the ump says “play ball” that he’s as locked in as the next man. As is stands, he leaves a lot of room to interpret that he doesn’t care about how his comments and actions negatively impact his teammates. It’s interesting to hear about his interest in basketball too because that is a sport that relies just as if not more heavily on the teamwork aspect and there’s a lot of “buying in” and sacrificing that goes into success on the court. Seems counter to his personality tbh. I’d be curious to know if Rendon ever put any effort towards individual sports like golf or tennis because it seems like that might fit his personality a bit better (or at least not require him to “give the company line” in interviews for the better of the team).

As an Angels fan. I completely agree. Rendon looks like he doesn’t work or care to improve his game. In fact he’s regressing and then you talk to him and he is antagonistic and like why are you bothering me. To me, it’d be better to see him show up looking like he put in work in the off-season, show up on game day whether he’s playing or not and be open to mentoring the younger players. He looks like he has sold out and doesn’t give a shit about baseball. His comments reflect that and then the freak injuries or his decision making ability really reflect that as well. Slapping a fan over being called a bitch, going into the field with a injured hand and pushing people. He just needs to show up, shut up, and show that he’s working.

I do agree with what you’re saying and clearly your personal experience is valid, but with 99% of other professions one could have, saying that faith and family come first before your job is a statement that’s very hard to argue. Why is that not true in this scenario? Because it’s tens of millions of dollars? Because baseball is a game at the end of the day? A combination of the two? Very interesting to think about.

The issue with Rendon is he comes off as antagonistic, especially towards the fans, when he is offering up this information in the way he states it. He's daring someone to say something, and he isn't willing to put the effort in to putting in a little but of thought in how he may come off, unless that thought is in trying to rub them the wrong way. He's making a choice, he's going "Yeah, I am that guy, what you gonna do about it... I got mine."

I think the problem is that he said the thing. Out loud. For all of us to hear. I'm sure there are a ton more players who think of baseball as only a job. They just don't say it out loud for the average baseball fan's consumption. Like you said, it's optics. He also doesn't seem to care one way or the other about his optics so, while the average baseball fan gets angry, he'll go about his merry way until he decides to hang up his cleats. I hope he finds something that does make him happy eventually.
