Thanks for doing this test. I have been thinking about getting a cartop carrier. I agree weight wouldn't matter a whole lot. Kyle with Out of Spec proved that with his towing tests.

Thanks for an interesting test, I always use that kind of carrier for our summer car trip to the west coast of Sweden (~500 km, 310 miles), this year we planned to travel in our brand new id4 gtx that we ordered last June, but we are still waiting for delivery. Good to see that the carrier doesn’t make that big a difference. About 19,7 kWh/100 km vs 17,4 kWh/100 km so about 9%, 70 mph is about 112 km/h which is about the same as the limit on highways around here.

I just bought my first EV, an Ioniq 5, and charge routinely at that same EA station in Frederick. Nice to find a KZread channel on EVs whose host lives in Maryland.

Good you took reading before pulling off as slower speeds and regening will add efficiency. Nice to see the Fredrick site. Looking forward to seeing the NC video (you'll be in my state though don't believe you'll end up in Raleigh/Cary if you're going to the beach. Perhaps a charger hop in Rocky Mount.

I've watched an other channel talking about 30% less efficient with weight inside the cargo box but with the biggest one from Thule. That's something to consider... We will be using a hitch carrier combined with 11cubefeet bag for a 1,000 miles trip this summer. I'm curious to see how bad it will be impacting the range...

What channel? I’d love to check that video out. There was another test but with a Ioniq 5 and the results were very similar to mine and they had weight in the cargo carrier. I believe he had and XL as well. I just have the Large.

I have a similar setup - same Thule carrier but I have the VW ID.4 rails. Just curious about your rails without the carrier. Do you get any whistle? With the VW rails, I have a whistle at about 35-45 mph. Not audible at highway speeds but pretty annoying driving around town. I have Yakima rails on my Chevy Bolt and I don't have a whistle with them. Thanks for the video. Btw, just did a little trip (150 miles each way) with the carrier on the roof and averaged 3.9 m/kwh. Thought that was pretty good.

3.9 is great!!! I have no Whistle with the Thule! Maybe look for any openings and cover them with electric tape? I did that on my rack system for our old Nissan Rogue. Worked great!

Great question! Personal experience with my in-laws and brother-in laws Thule systems. I was impressed by the durability! That is pretty much it! I have no negative opinions about the VW system. Would love to hear about other peoples' experiences with the VW system!

They should be farther apart on the Rails for Bikes , canoes & roof top carriers

Question non related to the video but related to the id.4, has anyone's steering wheel started peeling? Unfortunately my 2023 has.

Yes, VWIDtalk forums have a ton of people with this issue on 2023 ID4s. VW went to a vegan fake leatherette crap. They will tell you its your hand creams or sanitizers. They totally cheaped out and should be a warranty thing.
