I have used latrines at Boy Scout summer camp (until the BSA National Office and state health departments mandated the use of campsite flush toilets in the long-term camps; High Adventure bases such as Philmont are exempt), a chemical toilet (with a "slopping out" bucket) at the family cabin, and even "brown capped" in the woods. So using the SpaceX, Boeing Starliner, Soyuz, or ISS toilet systems would not bother me.

When I was a trucker I used a portable camping toilet with a working manual pump flush. I’d empty the waste in truck stop toilets. It was a godsend when I was stuck at shippers and receivers with no restrooms.

Their food is meant to be part of a "low residue" diet, thus reducing the need to go No. 2. Flight surgeons are always hounding on the astronauts to drink plenty of water, and that is due to the prevention of urinary tract and kidney infections that affected astronaut Fred Haise during the return phase of Apollo 13 (which was beyond his control due to the need of rationing the water in the LM).

@@FB0102 it's been well-documented. U-2 pilots would do the same before flying their flights (as they have to wear pressure suits due to the altitude and unpressurized cabin) and NASA has done the same with Mercury, Gemini, Apollo (including Skylab and ASTP), and Shuttle. Out of all of them, only the Apollo missions had "fecal containment systems" (a pair of tight-fitting shorts similar to athletic compression shorts) but that was meant to only be used when necessary (and only when REALLY necessary), thus the low-residue diets the prime and backup crews ate many days in advance to the launch.

We can see in these comments who has never served in the military, or maybe been wilderness camping. Everything is a trade off...if what you are doing isn't worth dealing with your bodily functions in that environment, then that's one reason why you aren't doing that job and they are.

Putting it right in front was an interesting choice. Since the crew undoubtedly spends most of their time in their seats, using the toilet makes sure that you will have an audience. I'm a little surprised that they didn't put it behind the seats.

1:13 Apollo 10 had 1 or 2 floating turds that escaped those bags. No one owned up to whose they were lol.

There was also a shuttle mission that was almost recalled early because of toilet failure and serious risk of having to resort to Apollo era bags as backup.

@@mancubwwa it was STS-3 that had the toilet malfunction and the crew, Jack Lousma (Skylab 3 veteran) and Gordon Fullerton (of the Group 7 of MOL astronauts) had to use the Apollo bags. There was also an incident on the classified DoD STS-33 where presumably (according to Scott Manley in his video) Commander Frederick Gregory almost depressurized the Shuttle cabin when he was "squeezing his 'Captain's Log' out"; the vacuum system actually malfunctioned, causing the cabin leak.

@@rwboa22 well, official nasa document lists "Cabin leak through WCS" as significant anomaly on STS-33, so this gives credence to Scott's version of events.

(Gross) fun fact: On one Apollo mission there was a toilet malfunction. So they had a "floater". Yes, fecal matter floating in the cabin, so they had to catch it, get the lid fixed and make sure it didn't happen again, the audio logs are pretty funny to read.

What toilet malfunction are you talking about? There was no toilet of any kind on any of Apollo missions. Or maybe fecal matter leaving plastic bag is more an user malfunction, than bag itself... // I guess you're talking about Apollo 8 and Frank Borman issues (puking and shitting same time).

@@override7486 As I said in my other post, it was on Apollo 10. And there was a toilett, although it was more like a lavatory, and yes, plastic bags were used. I think the lid of the container didn't close, so some poop escaped, floated through the capsule and needed to be caught and sealed away. Search for Apollo 10 and poop to see about the story.

​@@Sk4lli I have no idea what you're talking about, and it looks like nor do You really. A toilet in Command Module? A lavatory?? With 3 people stuck in such a tiny space, even some cubicle container for waste, not bigger than size of your butt sounds like a dream. In fact, they just used "regular" plastic bags with opening and they just stick it to the ass and try to squeeze your load of fecal matter into it, without loosing or spillage, which is not very difficult due to microG. When finished, they sealed the bag and knead content to mix it by hand with some antibacterial stuff... I don't know where you got this toilet news from, but googling doesn't bring any results whatsoever. Just stories about poop floating in CM, but this is heard in original audio loop from the mission and the crew...

Can you imagine on the ISS if 7 astronauts all had a serious explosive stomach bug at the same time.

All astronauts and NASA/Roscosmos/ESA/JAXA staff involved in a launch spend weeks in quarantine in the same building, before a launch, to avoid exactly that. They spend more than the standard viral incubation period of 14 days quarantined, no physical contact with outsiders, masks and PPE worn around each other; and this has dated back to the Mercury missions. One guy on an Apollo mission was hit by severe diarrhoea and vomiting associated with his body not coping with the change between earth and space, rather than a virus (and no other crew got sick) but it would not have been easy for him at all.

They put their bodies through a lot in training, they're scientists, they know what might happen. But how the hell does one provide comfort to someone so sick in space? @@mancubwwa Soyuz has 3 modules and 2 are accessible for the crew on start (the third one is just equipment). If I remember correctly from one of "tour over ISS" videos the toilet equipment (very robust and far from comfort) is in the section that attaches to ISS, while the descending module (the one with seats used during launch and landing) is the next one. So as strange as might seem, for sake of privacy at least, Soyuz actually might have its advantages. While Dragon is in principle one big common room for everything (plus cargo trunk that is not hermetic, therefore is not accessible for crew).

@@mancubwwa Of course you're right, I'm not counting everything together. I'm only stating that in context of having privacy, two claustrophobic small rooms have more oportunities than single bigger one - still with more people on board.

One of the more candid books about the Apollo program (sorry, can't remember its name) told the story of the recovery at sea of the command module for one of the missions. When the first frogman opened the hatch of what the author called a "flying toilet," he was bowled over by the odor back into the ocean. A little detail NASA never publicized.

Two thoughts here, 1, few of the commenters seem to have experienced the joys of post serious surgery stays in hospital - there's virtually no privacy there. And 2, in weightless conditions there is no gravity to help the poop separate from your rear end - each one has to be "helped" to detach.

Fun fact: The Apollo method was disliked so much by the astronauts, that for the space shuttle, a toilet that was broken called for a mission scrub and return. This almost happened on STS-33 when astronaut Fred Gregory went to use the toilet at "night", the vacuum went opened but the slider valve did not close. The air was being sucked out, luckily Gregory's bottom was also present. For a brief amount of time, Fred Gregory's butt was being sucked. After everything had been sorted out, they realized that the toilet was out-of-order and they may have to use Apollo bags. Mind you, STS-33 was a classified mission so a scrub would not make the Air Force (I think) happy. Fortunately, Mission Control was able to send makeshift repair instructions, so there was no need for both a scrub and the dreaded Apollo bags. Can't be nearly as awkward as using a C-130's toilet. It does have a curtain, but right on the other side would be up to 63 other Soldiers and the plane's crew. Plus, at the end of the flight, the last person to use it, has to empty it out.

In addition to proper functionality, a good toilet (in space or otherwise) do require three different types of privacy: 1. Visive privacy; You don't want anybody else watching you in the act, be first or second. 2. Acoustic privacy; You don't want anybody else listening at the noises produced during any of the two possible acts. 3. Odour privacy; You don't want anybody to smell the odours produced, especially from act two. ------------ Any toilet (in space or otherwise) which doesn't allow simultaneously for the three types of shielding mentioned above, is considered uncomfortable. In the limited habitation room of a Space Capsule, it is understandable that privacy is only of the visive type. The provision on the Apollo capsule were indeed unhygienic if not unbearable. NOTE. The perfect, luxury toilet for Space tourism in zero-gravity, of which I read about in SF stories, was a complete toilet/bathroom which, once the door was closed, begun to rotate along the plane perpendicular with the toilet bowl (and the sink and the bathtub), so the centrifugal force mimicked a gravity field that made all hygienic appliances work - as expected them to work on Earth. The entire bathroom, installed inside a centrifuge inside the spaceship... not a bad idea, I shall say. Thank you for the video!

mV^2/r rotating things don't give you a g force as easily as depicted in sci-fi, especially if your rotation radius is small. Rotating something as small as a toilet cabin to even get 0.1G would require many thousands RPM rotation speeds. And won't feel like gravity, definitely won't be comfortable.

Absolutely doable, but can you promise that, especially after learning that astronauts report that physiology is confused by drastic change in conditions - obviously lack of gravity is not often experienced - and can behave unpredictably.

When I went to basic training in the Army, In the barracks There wasn't a single wall anywhere in the bathrooms. 6 toilets lined up on one wall and 6 urinals on the facing wall. It sure quickly breaks down any modesty problems when you can say high to your friends doing their thing too while you do yours. I'm sure that was the intent.

I know they have a "waste disposal system" on Dragon but I think many people ask because it seems like a really small capsule and wondering if astronauts have to do their business in front of other crew members or is there some privacy

I guess you never flew on a C130 :). They had a "Honey Pot" a barrel with a plastic bag in it which a toilet seat on it, and it had a cheap plastic curtain that you could pull for "privacy" 😀. If you were crew or a small contingent flying with the plane it was your job to empty it when you were done. They did have a small urinal with a cover that drained outside the plane. I believe all the Air Force planes now are C-130 H or C-130 J's and they all now have chemical porta potties. They still have that cheap plastic shower curtain that goes around it though. 😀

I think the one thing that would make the airplane more bearable is the loud drone of the engines to drown out any noise you're making. At least then you can close your eyes and try to pretend you're alone. Not to mention that gravity would lessen the risk of mishaps that might get the rest of the crew involved.

I think it's the "dealbreaker" word that's missing in the entire "would you like to go into space?" debate. If people did consider it, well, I think many of us wouldn't like to go :)

They get so much training long before they go to launch. They probably don’t think about the privacy as much although it’s good they have a curtain. Keeping their body in top notch condition is part of the job. Eating, going to the bathroom, sleeping, and hygiene are all part of all the tasks they did as well as the thousands of experiments they do in space and other work on space station. They probably get lots training on earth. They also learn lots of new things while up there. Over the years NASA, SpaceX and all the other companies have learned new things in how to make things better, more efficient and less costly. Look at early space food and see where it is now.

We need to know what it smells like after someone has defecated. If the system has a way of flushing to smell out instantly or do others have to put up with the smell until it clears.

"Comfortable using it?" Considering the "uncomfortable" aspect of not using a space toilet when you need to, I guess that's not an issue. This crew has trained together and become a very close team. As a 'virtual family' I doubt any of them suffered much embarrassment over something all of them needed to do.

I was wondering about that...

In some of the older design barracks in the military (often delegated to visiting reserve or guard units you would have 3 toilets without walls on the west side, two toilets without walls facing them on the East wall, a giant window on the north wall a three man per sink on the south wall and an open doorway on the east wall all the way down in the south corner ... this led into the sink and mirror room to the east, which had an a door in its south wall which led into a hallway with the man exit entrance to the build to the east. What this mean is that you can stand outside and clearly see all three men urinating the back of one of the men on the east wall and at least three of the men sitting along the west wall. This also meant every time someone stood up, their bare ass was clear visible to those sitting on either side of them and his kibble and bit were very close to the man in front of him...... and we worry about privacy in SPACE

They are the same as on ISS - toilets on ISS are designed by russians. There are no other designs currently working in space. ]

i think this is still a bit far away from the movies 2001, or star trek. An idea is to have a box (like underware or knickers) for each people, that kind of box has water to wash and clean all the necessites, and a tube to connect that toilet machine we see in the video. So when someone needs to pee, or ect, he/she puts that box (of course if needed he can take of his chothes) and take a a pee inside that box, it is more private i think. There has to be a more efficient and convenient way to take care of business in this environment. NASA and SpaceX should collaborate with Toto Japan to figure it out. They are leaders in automated hygienic toilet systems used by more than 50 million around the world.

People are interested because we all do it, and also I think everyone knows there is no obvious loo in a space the size of a minivan. Talk about a privacy question.... I am sure the Inspiration crew will have some interesting thoughts to relay on this one.

Whenever I hear the subject of the "space toilet" , I am reminded of the "toilet scene" in 2001.

Should take a look at US Skylab toilet. That one you had to look twice before using.
