Does the next

American or foreign coach. Does it matter what the nationality of the next #USMNT coach is?

Yes exactly what Ali Krieger and Casey Keller are saying. That players have to feel like if they don't perform they are out, and the next person is in. That little bit of fear of the coach. That feels like it is missing with the USMNT. Some of our main players are too comfortable with Berhalter.

"When I was talking to my FRIENDS....who are in hierarchy of USSF" explains a lot about his takes. I am especially worried since he followed that with "if GGG stays or goes" suggesting that GGG staying is a viable option.

When I listen to the entire upload, I don't get his reflections being USSF "press release" 's... On balance, I'd argue he makes more of a case for a new coach than keeping G³. For ex., his comments about not worrying about 5, 8, etc year plan & going and getting a, "...mercenary coach"; his statement about working w/ "..fear" (even as he recognizes authority has to be given-like Hayes); and his reference to dual cycle coaches - all suggest he sees merit in USSF going 'new' more than G³ being a "possible" stay (b/c, a.that IS an option, and b., as we know, they already dipped from the same well twice.

He’s a club manager with zero experience of managing at international level. You need someone who’s managed at international level and ideally tournament football as you only have two years to prepare. Klopp might be a good long term option, but you need someone who could make a difference in the short term. Plus, he’d cost you an absolute fortune and you’d have to pay the women’s coach exactly the same and I don’t see that happening.

I find it odd that Diego Luna is being called selfish and having his feelings hurt and then the implication is that he may not get called up in the future, regardless of his performance at club because.... the national team program had their feelings hurt? The Olympic roster shouldn't be so small with a few alternates that need to be on sight "hoping" one of their teammates gets hurt so bad that they have to leave the tournament. That's just a ridiculous system.

Would Klopp be great? Absolutely. Unlikely no matter what is offered, but USSF/USMNT should pull out all the stops to try. That said, there are American coaches to look at. Top of my list is Pellegrino Matarazzo, who has coached club youth and first team sides to good effect in Germany. He's no BS, doesn't play favorites, tactically sound, and knows how to build belief and identity in a side in a relatively short time.

Whatever you pay the mens coach you have to pay the womens which is crazy in itself, but thats what you guys have agreed to and basically means you’re not getting anyone of Klopps calibre. There are still plenty of other good coaches out there who would be a huge improvement on what you currently have. You just have to be realistic and ideally go for someone thats good at getting the best out of what he has and that probably means playing a more pragmatic style which won’t be great to watch, but might get you better results in tournament football which is very different to club football.

No American coach has ever proven themselves at the top level in the top leagues in the world. Sure, Bob and Bruce had some success, but they also had major failures right after. No, his point is that you sign a mercenary to a contract running through the 2026 WC. Let's call that mercenary "Klopp" for short. The expectation is that Klopp spends 18 months focusing on one tournament and then you reset after that world cup and begin making new plans for the team. Klopp is not expected to "rebuild US soccer", he is expected to stop us from having a catastrophic result like we just had in Copa America.

7:05 Right on the Money. From outside, whether in the stadium or behind a Monitor Screen, it looks exactly that way. In team sports, where competition is the norm, when you start to hear the players say we like our coach, in life I learned to immediately check the results.. if that team is in a blank period you have to conclude that the players are too comfortable and they're basically trying to control the coach to go easy on them. They want the Status of a Star, but without winning it as a right. It's not working between Berhalter the FANS and the Players. And the only permanent thing in this sport is the FANs. So, why are some trying to convince the FANs to accept Failure on the basis that the USMNT Players are STARS and they like the Coach? Normally when that situation happens (the FANS like the Players and make Stars out of them, and the Players in turn say this is the coach we want) when that happens it's for a short time, not Permanently. So how did we get to "thing" where some of the FANs give Players the Status of a Star, and those players become the Controlling element in a Federation? The Problem is there are no results. Normally even if your Germany and you beat Brazil in Brazil 7-1 and you win the World Cup, you still have to respect the FANs as a whole. In National Teams the FANs are the entire Nation. The side responsible about this wacky relationship is the Federation. How did they not understand the lesson of 5-1? It's true it wasn't the moment to fire the coach, but it was a moment to make you DOUBT deeply the coach. When you lose 5-1 even if it's just a friendly, YOU'RE NOT DOING WELL. So why are they still treating Berhalter like he's a GINIUS, even after the contrast with Canada? I mean the level of Clarity is %100 Obvious. You hired the guy (re-hired) who lost a friendly by 5-1 (at home) and got ousted from Copa America (the biggest test for your level and most realistic that you can actually win), but you didn't hire the guy who took Canada to the Semifinal... and you're still playing the Role of a Federation that writes the Bible. They had to immediately turn against Gregg and say nice things about Jesse, within a NY minute from Canada beating Venezuela. BUT THEY DIDN'T at the USSF. So, why is it that it seams the USSF still doesn't understand they hired the wrong guy, and rejected the right guy? Even if they don't believe it, they should act as though they do for now, because the Metrics of the situation lead you strait to: JESSE is better than GREGG. The USSF seams to disrespect Jesse and Idolize Gregg. Something is wrong at the USSF!

I love how Herc pointed out it does not matter where the coach is from just because the likes of Mexico are purely obsessed with hiring a Mexican coach. Especialy now that most USA players are based in Europe so a European coach would not need to focus on the MLS because that is not where the roster plays in. The reASON Mexico needs a Mexican coach is because all those bums mostly play in Mexico so it makes total sense but for the USA they need someone different. These players play in Europe and different leagues so they can adapt to a new playing style

Diego Luna refusing the alternate position, opting not to go with the Olympic USMNT tells me there is a problem of too much stardom in US Soccer. Example, probably never hear such things from the Bundesliga Players in Germany. It's a Team Sport, you should be raised in a culture of Selflessness. I sense similar things from Gregg's USMNT. And, to a lesser degree from USWMNT (but not after hiring Emma Hayes) Usually the Head Coach keeps things in check as far as individual Players who don't have proper Soccer Culture. If you're a good Coach you will not fall for B.S. such as we like our coach while the Team just got whipped 5-1 in a friendly and lost in Copa America, on your home turf. These things should be the most important principals of a USMNT Player. You can't afford to have one arrogant player. So the Olympic USMNT will be better off without Diego Luna. Team before Player !

They are off base with the Luna conversation… none of them were anything close to a game changer like him in their prime. All the issues have to do with the coach, being offered to join as an alternate is a slap in the face when he has elevated each national team he has been apart of till now. We wouldn’t force any other player like that in any other sport to be a roster alternate; it doesn’t happen with our basketball team, our track and field team, our gymnastics teams; so why should a guy that has never had an issue getting on the field for America before now, and being the best creative player no less, have to beg for a spot and sit with being an alternate? I don’t see it as selfish, I see it as knowing he won’t get on the field as an alternate, especially cause that team will not go far without him anyways, they struggled and have struggled without him. USSF is in deep trouble with how their coaches work, and how the system works, because the reality is that it does not if they refuse to find the best coaches for the best crop of players that we have had.

It would only add to the total disaster that is the USA soccer program. A simple change of coach is not the answer. Sadly, it is true the USA has never produced any player who would quality as World Class by any reasonable measuring stick. There have been a heartbreakingly few individuals who have managed to reach the level of "competent professionals", but this is not nearly good enough to allow us to compete successfully at the World Level. And there is unlikely to be no coach of any real reputation who would sully that reputation by taking on this impossible situation. We have to start over at the USSF level. Get rid of the "power seekers" and politicians, and build a ruthless results driven program all the way down to the entry level of the sport. Start there. Work for decades. Prune the dead wood at all levels, and get serious about things the way the rest of the world does it.

Emma Hayes will bring in the British taskmistress mentality or the Nurse Ratchet thought process for the women. No. The next USMNT coach does not need to be American. They need to demand attention and respect. Players, because they are human too, need to be on point with that. Otherwise, they should lose their spot to the person who wants it more. Alexi Lalas has said it before and it sounds like you guys agree, that a coach really should not extend beyond 1 cycle.
