For those who want to play the LFO with a bite sensor: CC26 (LFO intensity) needs to be used. The main hurdle is the implementation that Korg developed due to the joy stick concept. You can only use the „Y+“ range of joy stick. This means that the min value needs to be 64. the max value can be 127 as usual. This can be setup quite easily for the EWI 5000 once you know what to do. It’s quite sad Korg didn’t mention the bit range in the manual…

Interesting. I haven't tried this because I tend to assume just playing the filter isn't going to feel responsive / expressive enough, but some of the patches seemed pretty promising. I like the idea of keeping a pluck at the start of the note, which is difficult to do with just breath. 7 bits of MIDI isn't all that much to work with, compared to how a real wind instrument behaves. At the risk of seeming picky, the Korg Minilogue (as per the title) is a different model to the Korg Minilogue XD, which you have there.

Oh thanks for catching that! Fixed it. Anyway, yeah, I've definitely found it to be hit or miss with filters. Nothing worse than trying to play a synth with sluggish filter response. Part of why I'm making this series of videos!

@@StefHaynes You're welcome. I started originally with a Roland JV-1010 following a Sound On Sound article on how to set the mod matrix. The main thing was to play filter cut off and resonance, plus VCA level, and optionally something for a MOD control to do, like vibrato. I got bored with that though because playing a sampled sound of how someone once played an instrument at a particular moment is very limited, whatever you do. The main trick with resonance was start a bit higher, then go lower as you blow, for woodwind and the opposite for brass sounds, and start the cut off off a bit above zero. You can't do that with a lot of synths though - you can only do individual CCs like you did here, but yes, I guess that can still sound good with the right filter.

Hey Stef, great video. Maybe helpful for all EWI players: the minilogue response best with low midi resolution. That being said, there will be weird artifacts with the EWI usb because it’s too much midi data to process.

Are you talking about a setting on the synth, or a setting on a wind controller? I've found some things get stuck notes with my Yamaha CBX-K1 mini keyboards, and I finally figured out it's because they don't process the amount of real time data it sends very well. I can work around that by using MIDI-OX to filter it out all together, just leaving note and CC messages. It's a bit unwieldy having to cable it all up, of course. Maybe there's a case for making a MIDI filter to thin out the amount of CC messages too, for wind playing. I kind of gave up on making patches for my Yamaha TX81Z because it kept giving "MIDI buffer full" errors as I was trying to edit them. Perhaps it needs either thinning out (rejecting updates that are sent too often) or an external queue for messages, that only feeds out to the TX81Z at a set rate.

@@TooSlowTube the EWI usb simply throws out the CC data in a much to high rate. With the EWI 5000 you can choose low resolution for the breath sensor. I’ve struggled with analog synths all day long until I bought the EWI 5000. The usb is great with softsynths though.

@@BerniGSax that's interesting about the high rate of CC data coming off the EWI USB as compared to the 5000. Have you ever looked at a MIDI monitor to see what exactly is coming out of the USB? I'm thinking maybe it's been configured to send high res breath CC data, which would be CC34

@@StefHaynes The bit resolution is not the issue. The amount of CCX messages per time is extreme with the EWI USB breath sensor. It causes a lot of crackling noise with analog synth like the microbrute or the minibrute. It´s really annoying when playing quietly.
