I support the harsh stance on drug traffickers. I remember LKY was asked about this and his answer is similar to Min Shan’s. We should protect the innocent instead of feeling sorry for the people who caused so much pain to the victims, for their own profit. Save your sympathy for the victims.

Very true.
this minister series is really something so niche that no podcast/show in Singapore has offered, so happy for u guys!! I think in a time when politics is getting more and more distant from the youth its great to have you guys bridging the gap for us and on our side airing our "grievances" on gvt's side giving them opportunities to explain, to me its a win-win la and its surely going to inspire youth like me to pay more attention to national issues! All the best ✌

I like how the hosts listen to Minister Shan so attentively. He is so calm and composed when he speaks and pulls no punches in his words.

Really? 1-2 hosts would often say or comment something while the Minister is talking. It happened more than once..
Bringing ministers onboard is a masterstroke. Its so insightful and very enlightening. I had a different view towards the death penalty but hearing Min. talk about it gave me a whole new perspective. Love it. Really good stuff guys!
The response to the penalty for rape was so well thought out. Never considered it, but it makes a lot of sense.
You know the minister has a busy life when you see the watches he wears on each hand

Yes, it is of highest possibility it is a health tracking device. Imagine the level of stress and thought processes each day as a minister - couple that with the health side effects of aging and the lack of quality time for personal matters: hobby, exercising and sleep. May they be blessed with long healthy lives and thank you for your commitment and dedication towards building the nation

Minister Shan really put everything into perspective
Love this so much! Props to Min Shan for this conversation and to all the hosts for asking tougher questions to pull out the rationale to why Singapore's death penalty is still here. May not work for other countries but it works here
I am all for death penalty. For those who are fighting against it, you need to travel more, see more, experience more, in order to truly know how it destroys the individuals and families. This view will come with age; I was once younger and I used to think it’s cool to have lots of fun and a little drug wouldn’t kill but in reality, those people always end up getting too deep into it and have their lives implicated in a crazy way.
I’ve been working in the US for awhile and to those that think of drugs as harmless. They should really visit the Tenderloin area in San Francisco.

I really enjoy this minister talk! Please continue to invite them! 🙏🏻
Pls invite Louis Ng on the podcast if possible, always found his career path as a MP to be a pretty interesting one.
Great piece for having Minister Sham on board to have a Q&A. Maybe can do a COVID wrap up with the Task Force Ministers? Or Minister Wong?
13:02 The moment when Denise said "Yes, except now Hungry Ghost festival" was way too funny LOL
Would love to see more ministers invited for this talks . Gives us insight of what happens behind each ministries. 👍🥰🥰
Yes. That's what I feel about drugs traffickers and their family who is fighting for them. Their family also enjoy the profits from the successful trafficking attempts but do not return the money when caught. The drug abusers' family should show up at these anti-death penalty protests and shout at them.

feels like many modern world shows more pity for the criminal more than the victims of the criminal quite sad really.

Thank you for inviting Minister Shan and talking about this topic. Most of the people worldwide just making use of compassions of one from either family or from others for own benefits.
Honestly listening to this makes me want to work and move to Singapore. Im amazed how eloquently he spoke.
Please bring him back or bring in other ministers, maybe host a Q&A session on your socials and get other fellow Singaporeans to ask questions. This is a really good series for us to get to know ministers on an individual level and also for them to keep boots on the ground with us peasants.
my favorite Minister! awesome to see him in such a setting!
If you think about it, the millionaires that are coming into Singapore, a good number of them were from the countries criticising our systems. If the alternatives are really that good, why are the richest and brightest from these regions coming here instead of remaining there?

Really insightful episode, learnt a lot about what goes behind Singapore's policy making
Informative talk. Factual arguments that makes one understand the reasons for our death penalty.
I feel so lucky to be born a Singaporean.
These episodes are great and informative. Really impressed with TDK :)
Damn, this is a quality podcast! how I wish Mr Lee was able to be invited here. it will be an exclusive episode.
Really insightful podcast, would love to see Minister back again on the podcast!
It’s heartening to hear that drug abusers don’t have criminal records in Sg anymore. Helping them back on their feet and reintegrate with society is so much more constructive and meaningful.
John really comes across as an ardent fanboy of the gov.
Getting strapped for this one, big fan of Minister K. Shanmugam.
So happy with this podcast, very well respected Minister
Awesome! These should be the way for Minister's Dialogues!!
I love to listen to Mr Shanmugam’s interviews. His knowledge, experience, and how he explains things make the person who asks questions speechless. I am always learning something from him. I pray and wish to get a few ministers like Mr Shanmugam to our country (Sri Lanka) as well. Great work, guys! 🎉
Totally loved this. Do more of such interviews.
Finally subscribed to this channel after this episode! Really cool, love the minister series.. I see the pride in building sgp to world class...pride and arrogant is a fine line, stay humble, stay safe 🙏
Excellent clarification, Minister Shanmugam! TDK, keep them coming....👍
Death penalty will still work as long self-discipline and personal responsibility doesn't. The fact is that most convicts are aware of the consequences, and still exercise their freewill. Whether is death penalty or other penalties, no one is (and should be) exempted from the consequences of the things they do or say.
Kudos to the Minister for coming on the show & tackling the questions head on. Convincing!
Many SG people are too privileged and taking the safety in the country for granted. Just try staying in any other ASEAN city for a year alone, take public transport and stay on local public housing areas. Just try it and see for yourself why SG death penalties work as intended and is keeping your family out of harm's way.
See title…. No way…. U got THE minister shamugam…….. kudos on having him the show! Ok watching now. Wheeeeeee
serious answers given in a very mild manner makes the commentators at ease
Great video! Finished it and loved it
Singapore is gifted to have such talenteed and compassionate leaders
Pls bring more ministers on the show!
I saw some Thai mother in rehab centers with their new horns who were drug addicts too. It was a shocking sight. It was like a ghost dying graves n the poor babies were crying
Very informative and interesting. More should watch. Kamsiah!
It's so stressful interviewing Minister Shanmugan lol.
broooo how lucky can y’all be to have a podcast with ministers
Re the 'low income' exception for drug traffickers - the problem is that the public policy argument is based on facts and logic, which, sure, makes sense, but appeals to the head and not the heart. IMO the bigger reason is the moral argument - that it is plain bs to say that these people are poor and desperate and that's why they resort to drug trafficking - how about all the poor and desperate people who refuse to take easy money and decide to keep struggling? Making this ridiculous argument spits on their struggles, efforts. Just because you are poor doesn't justify you hurting others, no more than being poor justifies you stealing. There are plenty of poor people who make the difficult and right choice - respect and honour them.

Minister shan is an honest man with straight answers , cool respect
Anyone else noticed that minister is wearing 2 watches? I super love these interviews with ministers and religion leaders 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I like this minister! He’s so calm, so collected and so wise!! / salute!
Denise facial expression and enlightentment + John's "NOT SAY IS SARPPORT AHH" hahaha EPIC!!! Min Shan #masterclass ^^
Very insightful
Singapore, you are truly fortunate to have this man as a representative of your government! This man is very intelligent, is well-spoken as a natural born leader, and genuinely seems to care for the wellbeing of the people he has been elected to serve. I sincerely wish that more countries in this world had leaders like this Member of Singapore's Parliament!
Very very very good episode!! Well done! I hope there’s more than 1 episode So much clarity!
I feel the stress for you guys throughout the entire podcast
Like how we have our minister putting out there the perspective of policy making and benefiting the society of SG in one big picture~

Gotta catch 'em all... Pokemon! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I read a quote somewhere, that mentioned why people should arrest criminals, murderers and drug traffickers despite their sympathetic backgrounds. we owe it all the people who have gone through similar tragedies, who found the strength to find other paths, who made the right choice. it isn’t fair to them, and it isn’t fair to the victims of the crimes. they had a choice, and they chose to go down the wrong path.
HAHAHA the ending bloopers. I’m surprised my brain didn’t go there the first time 😂😂
his voice is very calming….
Next Minister Tharman 😉
OMG LOVE HIM SO MUCH!
I think this ministry has to take a very hard decisions and his decisions have been very good despite the backlash from people. He put the priority on people than his own face because he's received hate.
Yes, always say don't take the safety of Singapore for granted, the choping of seats with valueables here is ... .... smh. and everything else. Thanks Minister K. Shanmugam for the reply on why don't rape get the death penalty like drugs. and also, Thanks JP for asking that bonus question Working " with Lee Kuan Yew " that is a question I would always ask every old guard that worked with Grandpa Lee.
wow, one of the best episode. fire
very very interesting podcast
Is anyone able to share the link to the BBC interview John is referring to at 20:31?
Should have a part 2 on the schooling case.
Fantastic podcast!
Thank you minister shanmugan :)
Such an intelligent man...
Amazing Minister.
i really enjoyed myself with this episode, in fact with the ministers onboard (Chan/Shan). keep it up.
Hard Head, Soft Heart Now I really get persuaded on coming to SG
The biggest takeaway is from our Minister “善木跟” is that he has created a new trending by wearing digital & analog watches at the same time. 🤪👍👏🇸🇬

Omg I did not notice that
Insightful, great to hear a session where the thought process is thoroughly roll-out instead of being interrupted constantly,
the death penalty for drug trafficking was introduced on 20 November 1975 presumely after the worrying results collected after the formation of the Central narcotics bureau in 1971.
the 20% of people who says death penalty is not a good deterrent are very sus LOL
off topic but Mr Shanmugam is totes rocking his polo ralph vest
Of course ! DO NOT change !!!!! Maintain the status quo 😁
How did your channel manage to get ministers to be on it?
I have a feeling that Lawrence Wong has a very diff leadership style and I hope he gets invited in the podcast. Shanmugam was a great lawyer, but I’ve spoken to many police officers and the morale within the SPF seems very low, very high turnover rate. His intellect is admirable but this may compromise leadership skills/ability to relate to those below. He views “affability” as an obstacle to getting things done which says a lot about one’s perspective and people skills (mindset from the past which sets the culture in various gvt agencies). He cites many statistics and “facts” but doesn’t necessarily lead from the heart which is important in bonding / inspiring people, it is a balancing act. The most socially intelligent are those like Jon, who relate to others, help others feel good, SO THAT they get things done. Hard-headedness does not make the best leaders, at least when the term is phrased/used that way. He needs a good deputy to complement his strengths.
Can we have Tan Chuan Jin next?
OMG I LOVE SHANMUGAM
To me. He is the best minister :). He will always my support.
OMG how stressed were u guys! Its Minister Shanmugam siaaaa!!!
Looking forward to seeing PM Lee on your podcast!
The part about being removed for not being "able to build the flats", referring to Mah Bow Tan?
Good utilitarian view.
