Does Taylor Swift Deserve Her Billion Dollar Fortune?

Taylor Swift's billionaire status stands out among her financial peers from the business community who are often scrutinized for their extreme wealth. Swift became a self-made billionaire because of her unparalleled talent, relentless work ethic, and passionate support from millions of fans. If Swift's fortune is because of these factors, isn’t it a desirable and inspiring outcome? Those who agree would point to philosopher Robert Nozick, who says if someone acquires wealth through just means without violating others' rights, they are entitled to the rewards of their labor. However, philosophers with an opposing view are concerned about whether any individual, including Swift, should be able to amass such fortunes. To them, every billionaire created is a policy failure and they tend to prioritize equality of outcomes versus equality of opportunity. They question the fairness of a system that permits vast wealth accumulation and argue that luck and systemic advantages often play a role and in some cases, involve exploitation.
With this background, we debate the question: Does Taylor Swift Deserve Her Billion Dollar Fortune?
Arguing Yes: Jessica Flanigan, Political Philosopher and Chair in Ethics and Democratic Values at the University of Richmond
Arguing No: Ingrid Robeyns, Chair in Ethics of Institutions at Utrecht University's Ethics Institute; Author of "Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth"
Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates

Taylor uses her talent to produce a sound. Not listening to those sounds is very easy. She did not extract an element from a mine or oil from the ground. Only her talents made her rich. She absolutely deserves her wealth.

Yes. She earned her wealth by creating value with her own skills and talent. If anyone has earned their wealth it's the people who did so using their own skills and talent.

You mean the people who exploit other people's vulnerabilities to enrich themselves like Bezos, Musk, Koch, etc. etc?

you can't restrict people earning potential. Folks who work harder and archive more ... should have the ability to earn more.

This clickbait title seems like designed to disfavor notions along the lines that ideal economic policies would somehow prevent huge economic disparities, not singling out a singer who probably didn't steal anything (although examples of somewhat similar songs are not uncommon) nor even did anything corrupt to acquire anything as someone whose earnings are questioned. Even "equality of outcome" seems biased against a more nuanced notion, rarely anyone would actually support that whether one is a hard worker who delivers something that people desire should have the same outcomes as someone who does nothing or something very lazily and poorly. Rather, people will more likely argue for some decent baseline/safety-net, funded by redistribution from the top, but not to the level of produce equality of outcome regardless of output.

Jessica is really trying to sell the idea that Taylor Swift's music is as important as a malaria vaccine, or lifting billions of people out of poverty. I would have disagreed with this debate on the premise alone because hyper focusing on Taylor Swift is a distraction from the real issue, which is those who got their billions through unjust means, especially those who have hundreds of times as much wealth as even Taylor has. I'm sorry to say that we've entered the era where a billion dollars is still a mind-blowing amount of money but it's not enough to change the world. A trillion dollars? Sure. Which is why we should collectively tax all of those billionaires heavily. We're focusing too much though on the dollar amount, and not enough on how those people made their wealth, which entirely comes down to control of land, resources, and labor, and then lastly the control of inherited capital.

I do believe this is a waste of time worrying about whether it's fair for T.S. to be a billionaire. The TRUTH is, she has EARNED IT, IT'S HERS PERIOD. To insist that she spread her wealth. That word ,"distribution of resources, " is just another word for ," stealing." To "take," from one person to give to another violates a moral commandment: Thou shalt not steal. But this really an argument BETWEEN capitalism v socialism. And we all KNOW how socialism produces.
