Does Sugar Cause Cancer? Live on BBC Breakfast July 2019 | Nichola Ludlam-Raine

This morning I was on the BBC Breakfast sofa discussing the latest headlines thanks to a new study from France who looked at the diets of over 100,000 people.. here is some of what I said!👇🏻
🗣 It certainly sounds scary doesn’t it? And although we’ve known for a while that too much sugar isn’t good for us, the way in which this study was done means that it can’t prove that sugary drinks alone cause cancer, it can only show an association; so something else the study showed is that the people who drank the sugary drinks also consumed more calories as well as salt; so the people who were having these sugary drinks may for example have been having them along side takeaways or fast-food, at the expense of meals containing more fibre and vegetables which we know protect us against cancer. 🥗
✔️The study supports the notion that as a nation we should be cutting down on sugary drinks; as they don’t provide any nutrients, are easy to over consume and lead to problems with your teeth as well. This is inline with the sugar tax which is there to encourage manufactures to reformulate and protect consumers rather than penalise them.🥤
🍊We are reminded that fruit juice should be kept to no more that 1 small glass a day; although it provides some fibre & vitamins eating the whole fruit is better; it takes longer to eat and provides more fibre.
🙅🏻‍♀️Sugary drinks shouldn’t be drunk regularly; ideally people should be having water or at the very least a no added sugar squash or the diet or zero alternative which aren’t, and weren’t in this study specifically, associated with cancer risk.
TAKE ACTION:
✅ If you add sugar to your tea or coffee can you reduce the amount or not add any at all? ☕️
✅ If you’re buying a fizzy drink can you choose the diet or zero equivalent?
✅ If you’re having a glass of fresh fruit juice to keep it to no more than 150ml.
✅ Can you drink more water over the day to stay hydrated? 💦
Do you drink sugary drinks? 🤔
What do you make of the study?

Great interview Nichola! As a fellow dietitian (although only very recently registered!), I think its so important for the public that we are dispelling myths and clarifying headlines from the media. People are health conscious and they need a source of information they can trust, and people like you are essential for spreading the word. I'm honoured to be part of your profession, let's keep on spreading the good words of dietetics! Xx

Good day, For some reason, the conclusion didn't match the question. This diverged from "Sugar causes cancer?" to fizzy pops and fruit juices. Here's a study* that suggests that "Obesity and diabetes are well-known risk factors for the development of endometrial cancer. A high rate of aerobic glycolysis represents a key mechanism by which endometrial cancer cells consume glucose as its primary energy source". Please note that "edometrial cancer cells consume glucose as their primary energy source". Therefore, reducing glucose in all of its forms, e.g., fizzy drinks, bread (chains of glucose), fruit (glucose and fructose), rice, legumes, and table sugar would be a plus as this study finds that glucose is this cancer's chief energy source. Three ways exist scientifically to reverse Type II Diabetes (and the subsequent obesity, which are the risk factors for this cancer), viz., Bariatric interventions (which I believe Mx. Ludlam-Raine is expert here), calorie reduction (which is not sustainable due to the eventual starvation), and a low-carbohydrate diet (which is sustainable, and the correct glucose levels for the body are governed by the body via gluconeogenesis). The patient should be provided knowledge on these three interventions by the competent medical professional, agreed? Finally, the end of this clip ended with drinking sugary drinks; even so, I applaud, Mx. Ludlam-Raine for her wrap up suggesting the reduction of "sugar". In fact, if one needs the vitamins, &c. in a fruit, one should eat the entire fruit in order to add the fibre, which would be lost in the "refined" juice. C'est une execellente ideé ! Cheers! *STUDY: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4672629/

Great advice Nic 👍👍 I completely agree with you that if it's taken in isolation, any study could seem scary. The general picture should always be considered to determine if someone's diet is balanced/healthy or not 👌👌🥦🥦⚖️⚖️

Hello! Aw thank you!! It depends on the ingredients but 200ml I would say to be a good portion! You can have more if it’s made at home with veg too plus milk etc!
