Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 4+ years and living together in Minneapolis for 2 years. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

This lady was raised right. Bravo to her parents for never filling her head with judgement or entitlements etc. she was taught to be open minded and compassionate for everyone. Because she didn’t judge him from the outside appearances she was rewarded with an amazing partner who truely loves her... for her. You may never know what you’ve missed out on by judgeing someone right from the get go and that’s the sad part. You may have already lost your soul mate and didn’t even know it.

Every couple goes between giving care and intimacy. Widowed, but I was married 23 yrs. He cared for me after surgeries, I cared for him through a broken leg. He cared for me through pregnancies and births. We cared for each other through flus. Just like every couple, who becomes each others partner and family, it includes both parts of physical care.

I get so confused when people ask about a “line” between caregiving and intimacy. Like have you never done things for a partner while they’re sick or tired or emotional? I know right! That was a dumb question, but I guess a lot of people/kids never see someone getting cared for by a family member. It's sad ... My mom was a CNA and my grandmother and I myself have one because I love caring for people. It is a special bond you get when you care for someone, even more so if it was a lover. But there's no line to someone actions of love. Work and love come one in the same. The problem with people these days is they think love is only about sex.

I have a 9 year old daughter with disabilities. She requires help with every part of daily living. People don't expect me to separate my caregiver role and mom role. I'm expected to do both naturally, which obviously I do. So why would it be any different for you two? Also, if Shane was not disabled when y'all met but became disabled later on, if you left him, people would shame you for leaving him due to his disabilities. However, people have problems accepting that you will date, now marry, him despite his disabilities. It makes absolutely no sense to me. We are all human. And guess what? We are all just one accident, one illness away from being disabled. Treat everyone with respect because in a split second, it could also be you.

Very well said because its the truth, im 51 now but when I was 17 I joined Australian Army jogged long distances did lots of weight training as well as a lot of educational lessons my life was going very well near top of my game achieving all my goals in Military that is and one weekend I went for a motorcycle ride and resulted in the amputation of my R leg below knee plus back injuries, but im happy I trust the Lord and his will for me see there is a reason for everything...

Hi. Just recently found you guys on KZread. You are authentic genuine and honest. You also tackle issues that lot's of people wouldn't touch for fear of upsetting people. You guys are a great example of unconditional love one for the other. Don't worry about the nasties of this world and keep at it. Peoples perceptions are only changed by education sometimes one person at a time. Thanks you for what you are doing and know that it does make a difference.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Haha Shane is absolutely hilarious and I love how dry and sarcastic both of your humour is! I have only just discovered your KZread channel today (sending love from New Zealand!) and I am just so happy watching your journey. I have been watching your past videos for about an hour now and wow what a journey you have both had together so far. Hannah you are a selfless, caring and strong woman! And Shane you are just absolutely hilarious and intelligent. Go you guys, I’m so happy I came across one of your videos this morning on Facebook. Keep up with the light hearted joking around together and I’m sure you will have a very fulfilling and enjoyable future together - what an amazing message to all couples out there regardless of situation or ability.

I think it is groundbreaking almost revolutionary that you both are tactfully addressing the issue of intimacy.people should be educated more on the mistruths regarding disabilities, and wheel chair bound individuals does not mean they do not have ability to be sexual.its a sensitive topic but awesome that you as a couple have brought it to the table front and center, lol .that meaning the conversation ,not anything else.. it shows you both are deeply in love and comfortable enough to try to answer people's questions,so once and for all the mystery is no more!

Personally i would never be in a relation ship with a man like Shane even if he was the most caring person in the world and even if he could have sex with me. NEVER. Of course i could have been friends with such people. No problem at all. I could alse take care such people if they were my relatives. Thats life!

Thank you for adding the subtitles, English is not my first language so that's really helpful! And thank you for talking about sexuality this way. I feel it is completely necessary for us as a society to help each other living sexual intimacy as a deep encounter with another person... an encouter that includes communication, tenderness, humour, etc., besides libido, which is also important, of course, but there's so much more! Usually, we are told about 'sex stories' like if the people involved were machines rather than human beings. So thank you a lot. This is important and generous.
