    Leaving renault was a far bigger mistake for him than leaving red bull. You could understand why he left red bull but renault was already offering him what he wanted: defacto #1 status,a car developed in his driving style, and a teammate that he had a measure of. I think Daniel seriously underestimated Norris as a teammate.

    I don't think he underestimated Norris. I just think he wanted a BETTER project and thought McLaren was a feel good project. But he and this car don't agree and as Norris is doing better in the same car they will not roll back to build the car for Daniel. But I do agree, leaving Renault was not a good move and I say this because they are a constructor and McLaren a customer team. Customer teams don't normally beat constructor teams, RBR being the ONLY exception to this rule.

    If it had worked, McLaren was the obvious choice. I mean Alpine/Renault has been nowhere for years. You also have to remember he did this at the start of 2020, after a very average 2019 season. He didn’t have the benefit of seeing his performances in 2020. Between McLaren and Alpine I know who I’d choose. 4 podiums and an extremely lucky win since their last podium in 2011 compared to 8 podiums and a true pace win since 2020. If he just wanted a team that worked well with him then Alpine would’ve been the team but he wants to win a championship.

    I think a break from F1 will do him some good, take Fernando for example, took 2 years off to do other forms of racing, find some success and return to F1 with confidence and a fresh start. Since he has a deep affinity in the US, an IndyCar or IMSA seat is an option, as racing in America would put him in a happy place. A Herta / Ricciardo swap could easily happen.

    F1 doesnt end in Mclaren. This is the first time Daniel has a negative score against a teammate (except for... Kvyat). He held a positive score against every single teammate he had, and that list includes two world champions. It would be unwise to think the man is done. People should be more focused in the fact the Mclaren is going backwards and not even Lando is going forward in the scoreboard. They need to rethink their car design philosophy, as that could benefit both drivers, because right now it's not working for either of them.

    I believe Ricciardo still has the goods. - He won at Monza from start to finish, his strongest win in my opinion. Despite the Hamilton-Verstappen crash, I think McLaren were too quick that day. - He performed consistently well for Renault in 2020, finishing 5th behind Perez who was in the "Pink Mercedes". - His time at Toro Rosso and Redbull, whilst a long time ago in F1 terms, showcased his racecraft and talent. The main issue is the well documented conflict between his driving style not suiting the McLaren. Not overcoming this fact in his second year at the team is the hardest thing to grasp. However, I wonder how detrimental it was for him to miss pre-season testing due to Covid. Norris was the single point of data meaning no feedback or input could be given from Ricciardo. This reminds me of 2009 when Webber suffered an injury before pre-season and wasn't able to test. A consequence was that Red Bull had Vettel as the primary source of data. Pre-season testing is an important time to sync drivers and their cars. Regarding his future at McLaren? The clouds are coming in and silly season is underway. It almost feels like a test between Ricciardo and McLaren to see who blinks first. What we will never truly know is what specific expectations were set from both parties in 2020. Ricciardo wanted to be at McLaren in 2019, after seeing them improve and feeling they were his next-best option for a title. McLaren wanted a driver like him to help bring them into championship contention. I don't think either party has delivered as they'd like.

    Who beat Seb 10-7. There's the fuel gauge thing but there's also the tyre failure thing. Not to mention even in 2020 Seb was only a quarter second slower than Charles....who is crazy fast. Lance beat Hulkenberg in Qualifying the second race which means the German had some time in the car. The Miami track was unfamiliar and challenging and Seb is still fast..yet Stroll was quicker. Stroll had more good results but his only great one was ruined by tyre failure. Perez is nearly Max Speed yet was only 0.088 seconds faster. They were 4-4 in races in 2020.

    My main questioning when people talk about the car is: at which point you stop using the car as an excuse and hold the driver accountable? In the past you had drivers performing well even with cars which weren't as competitive. Nowadays a driver's skill and adaptability seems to be all shifted to the car. Lando has been caught several times saying he doesn't like how the McLaren car drives, yet he can deliver results with it. Daniel seems to be that one trick pony driver that can only deliver in a specific type of car.

  • @SaintKimbo

    @SaintKimbo

    Yes, and also no one mentions that all the great Drivers of the past didn't exclusively drive F1. Plenty of F1 Drivers have competed in, and won, Le mans during their time as F1 Drivers, Jim Clark used to drive Cortinas in British Touring car races. Stirling Moss won the 'Mille Miglia', driving around the public roads of Italy in a Mercedes Gull Wing sports car. Indy car Drivers, in the 50's and 60's had dirt track racing as part of their Championship series. They HAD to be adaptable, and quickly become competitive in different spec cars or they couldn't make a living. All this just makes Daniel, or any other F1 Driver sound pretty lame, when they complain that a car, "doesn't suit their driving style".

    McLaren is such a unique team in global motorsports because of their major commitments in both Formula One AND Indycar. Effectively, this gives them a driver pool of their F1 team, any potential juniors, in addition to those who circulate through their Indycar team, Arrow McLaren SP. Pato O'ward has been absolutely killing it in the states, and he's already tested the MCL35M with potential for outings later this season in the '22 car. While it remains to be seen where Danny Ric will go, it would be a fabulous surprise for him to try his hand in American Open Wheel, assuming the car suits his fancy.

Even if McLaren do decide to bear with him, it will only be for one more season at most. The extension of Perez’s contract might herald the way for a possible norris/gasly line up at McLaren. In short, ricciardo is easily one of the most Alonso-est team chooser ever. Moving from redbull was questionable albeit understandable but the move from Renault…? It also doesn’t help that he was originally brought in to guide lando through but we can easily say lando has been beating him since they began. Saying that he is isn’t adjusted to the car yet isn’t a long term reason. I’m pretty sure there are tons of hungry, capable drivers who can handle that car. Peace ✌️

    His decisions to move to Renault made Carlos loose his seet there. Carlos goes to McLaren. 1 year later Daniel wants to move to McLaren, Carlos looses his seat. Sorry but thats bs. Now McLaren thinks they probably made a mistake sacking Carlos, a young and promising driver for someone who is in my eyes overrated. Other then RB who had a good car, he didn't show to much...

    I feel very bad for Danny Ric, although I have to admit that I wasn’t a big Ricciardo fan (I’m usually cheering for Sainz, Norris, Vettel, and Albon) and felt like DR came to McLaren expecting to beat Lando (and even though everyone seems to laugh at that clip of DR asking Lando if he has “pubes,” I thought it was crass and condescending) and was particularly annoyed at Zak’s comments that they had wanted DR when they had signed Carlos 2 years earlier. Also, I think the youngest of the drivers on the F1 grid spend a great deal of time on the simulator, especially since F1 limits the time that they are able to test even in the preseason. Carlos’ success at McLaren and last year at Ferrari (despite him being sort of in middle in terms of age on the grid) I think is partly attributable to his willingness to move closer to team headquarters and spending a lot of time on the simulator in both cases. I don’ t get the sense that DR has spent that time trying to adapt his driving style to the car by utilizing the simulator. I will give Danny Ric credit for seeking out Carlos after Imola this year and apologizing; that was a classy thing to do.

I have prior experience of how contract's can be broken. there are clauses in his contract through which they can get rid of him but more importantly as it was for Sebastian in 2019. Do you even wanna race for someone who is trying to get rid of you. there is a really great interview of sky Germany when Sebastian was asked in brazil 2019 of his relation within the team. he's words said it best " I am in love with the idea of winning for Ferrari but maybe not in love with Ferrari". The McLaren is a lot of understeer like last year McLaren, check out Driver61 video. McLaren did not learn anything that Riccardo needs a car with more front grip, like the Red bull and Ferrari. Riccardo ,like Lewis, Max and Leclerec likes a car that has more front grip. Lando likes a car with rear grip just like Vettel and Kimi. The McLaren car requires a driver to slam late on the brakes to shift the balance of grip to the front then turn in aggressive. Riccardo likes to brake early like Max V then smoothly transition the car into the turning phase to go into the corner.

    It's quite simple, the car's characteristics suit Lando's driving style but not Daniel's. Having two different cars for two different drivers is not practical and it's not simply a matter of different setups for the same car unfortunately. Daniel's style is similar to Max's which is why he did so well at Red Bull, that car suited them both. So sadly it looks like the end for Daniel in F1, all for the want of a suitable car. Just one example, remember how Daniel used to lean on the front end of the Red Bull for his late braking into corners trick? Can't do that with the McLaren. What I think is that Daniel should be screaming at McLaren to give him a car that suits his driving style, he's being too nice when he is being criticised publicly.
