    Can we please call it what it is and normalize it… In these observational and epidemiological studies these are called Healthy User Bias or Unhealthy User Bias. It’s why these studies don’t really tell us anything… except that maybe a RCT is needed to confirm.

    @@Garret_bruh_homey Looks like that's only available if you pay $19/mo to be a member which most people in practice don't do (not that it's not worth it). I think there'd be an awesome public education opportunity in providing primary source (again, ideally review articles) citations for claims made here, for free. It would be really educational both on the specific topic being discussed, and as a positive example/demonstration of the evidence-based scientific thinking recommended on this channel.

    I am an epidemiologist and I disagree with this take. Dr. Attia is implying that there are a number of variables that are not taken into account when we do epidemiologic studies on diet and cancer. The variables he mentioned includes socioeconomic status, exercise, smoking, etc... The problem with this is that it is incorrect. Tons of models have adjusted for participant's socioeconomic status (income, education, zip codes, etc), physical activity, smoking, alcohol, and many others. The majority of these studies find that even when you take these variables into account, red meat consumption increases the risk of cancer.

    Agree with you, but large sample size studies are often observational (especially nutritional studies) as opposed to interventional (i.e., experimental). You can control for some factors but individuals are not alike and do not live identical lifestyles. We know today that eating fat doesn't make you fat, but that is exactly what dietary scientists were saying for decades.

    Cancer and Heart Disease update guidelines and best practices policies around red meat/Saturated fat due to lack of evidence involving risk and outcome from: The American Nutrition Association/2029-2025 Dietary Guideline for American Recommendations. Updated in 2022 on page 184-187 (Red meat/Saturated Fat no longer seen as a threat in modern health conditions) The American Heart Association/Guidelines and Statements of Professional heart Daily Updated 2018 on page 105-112 (Red meat/Saturated fat inclusive risk factor due to lack of evidence). There are many other health organizations that also update their policies

    Simplify Peter, Red meat doesn’t cause cancer. The vegetarian may get cancer because humans are not vegetables. So vegetarian could have nutritional deficiency which can trigger mutation. The vegetarian are healthy because they do exercise, sleep, etc, all these other variables made them healthy NOT because they are vegetarian.

    No, in the China study, there was definitely no hotdogs and no pepperoni. Although, meat eaters were more likely to be wealthy. So that’s the inverse of what you were saying.

    The China study is bs. It's basis was feeding rats and unsustainable diet give them casein. He made a hypothesis on that extrapolated that milk protein to all animal proteins consumed by humans saw the data and contorted results to look thru are more meat and had more cancer which is more complex. Eat non processed nutrients dense wide variety of veggies fruits nuts seeds meats and get sunshine, exercise sleep well laugh stay hydrated etc. that is the key

    AND the meat are both highly processed crappiest of meats with nitrates & nitrites and not compared to “industrial” regular meats or pasture raised meats. My takeaway from that study is stay away from HIGHLY PROCESSED MEATS OR MEATS WITH CONVENTIONAL PRESERVATIVES. But I’m gonna continue to eat my 100% pasture raised organic beef- and my fermented goat & sheep cheeses.

    Its also meat. Nitrates are carcinogenic but people who eat a lot of meat also more likely to get cancer but very hard to as he says detangle. Because if you're eating a lot of meat youre also probably eating a lot of other things and youre eating a lot. So the way we do science around food is very weird ..we look at one variable and try to eliminate the other variables... but we dont look at everything as a whole. Which is a huge problem in science. Because its fine if you're looking at something where you want to find out how one variable acts in a machine. Or a linear system but in a human it matters whether this person who eats meat has good gut health good excercise good muscles good digestion good mental health good sugar levels all of that. They often test something like vitamin c and say ok it didn't do anything but vitmain C needs vitmain é and zinc to even be useful in a body ... body cant use it if it doesnt have other things. So its just not a good model for testing things.

    ​@@Padraigp Nitrates on their own are not inherently carcinogenic. It’s the conversion of nitrates to nitrites and subsequent formation of nitrosamines that can pose potential risks. Bacteria in the body and our glands also produce nitrates.

    @@DardyGGfurthermore the dosage makes the poison as well. As an example apple seeds are toxic because they contain cyanide, but average adult would need to eat anywhere from 150 to several thousand crushed seeds (depending on the apple variety) to be at risk of cyanide poisoning!

    Its simple , go eat some quality meat for one meal and see how you feel later . Then go eat wheat bread , vegetables, and some fruit for one meal and see how you feel in a few hours. They've always said meat causes inflammation...but wheat , and carbs always makes me feel achey and crappy later . They push the humane thing as well but weve been eating meat as upright hominids for 2 million years . Our bodies need it. Even Bill gates has admitted its very difficult to replicate real meat . That tells you its unique enough that what ever it gives us is very important. Factory farms could up their game by treating animals with more compassion...because their is a pr war against them . Ive battled with the morality of it all but look around, 95% of people have meat in their diet . And ive known some vegans that look downright terrible. They have alot of problems with their teeth and hair . That should tell you something.

    Dad is 89, still plays 18 holes 2-3 times a week. His diet? Red meat and potatoes, eggs and cheeses. No fruits, no veggies. The beef he eats is scorched on he outside and completely raw on the inside. He'll send it back if it not raw, while eating at a restaurant.

    These conversations tend to move in the extremes and fester (to use your term: underwhelm) in the mean. I find it shocking the number of people who smoke and vape regularly knowing all we know...and yet. My point is we've got to keep having reasonable conversations in the mean spaces and do our best to invigorate ideas around natural eating, simple preparation and ignoring processed "food" altogether.

    It’s 100% context of how meat was raised, processed, and consumed.Were just learning what protein and fats , consumed with sugar or carbohydrates create glycation and lead to inflammation. Cancer scared me from meat, until I learned how our ancestors rarely ate them together. Meat is a big part of my recovery, so is saturated fat!Plants have tons of carcinogens , but they also cure cancer! It’s all about context.

    So are you telling me doctor, that all these preaching that I should eat meat or I will suffer from some serious malnutrition effects doesn't hold up? I can overcome this dietary deficiency risks just by living more healthy and excersising (which I actually do)? I can even outlife (a great book!) meateaters who don't bother to exercise?     I don't believe that for a second if it's a vegetarian, eating nothing but pasta. And pesticide loaded vegetables compared to a person who's eating clean grass, fed grass finished meat and vegetables and not allow carbs. I think there hasn't been studies done on that and by the way, I do yoga. 4 to 5 times a week, ride my bike on the weekends and walk twice a day. An hour each, so that's 2 hours a day walking. I find that hard to believe that because I'm a meat eater. I'm more unhealthy than a person that eats a bowl of rice with some vegetables

    For now I suppose, but you cannot get all thw nutrients you need without meat. Plants are actually full of antinutrients that disrupt nutrient absorption

    No he saying when people eat meat they are usually also doing other unhealthy things. People who are going out of their way to only eat plant based food obviously are doing more things to protect their health. However that one variable dosent turn into cancer. Its the more chronic and sever things like smoking,drinking,obesity,not exercising, poor diet,diabetes and,heart disease, not particularly because your eating red meat.

    @@basil9633 Red meat contributes to obesity and all the saturated fat in meat contributes to heart disease. I do agree that someone can mitigate these risks by eating less meat and avoiding saturated fat in the rest of their diet, but it makes no sense that meat doesn't contribute to risk.

    ​@@bobhill4364The carnivore diet cannot be healthy as a rule. Whilst I feel we are omniverous (plenty of evidence that we have been down the ages) the US seems to be going for big meat consumption. It's not like that in the UK. Personally, animal protein is so satisfying that I couldn't eat a lot of it. But now and again some simple animal protein feels important in my diet and I always consider and respect the origins of what's on my plate. Anything denatured or over-consumed leads to imbalance that leads to disease.

There are many other health organizations that also update their policies
