I've seen INTJs online criticize other INTJs because they only have a trajectory for their lives, not a concrete 15 year plan. Good to hear that a generalized path to their goal is a solid sign of Ni.

That’s where Te comes in. Te knows it HAS to be responsive to changing variables in. Ni is going that way no matter what. Where is the sensory line by line? Not as important.

I was part of a workshop today for NT women and one of the things that the facilitator said about Ni was that there was a great amount of play involved. Especially in conjunction with Te. There’s a willingness to recalibrate based on new information coming in. I’ve never realized how incredibly flexible INTJs thinking can be if they really honour their Te.

Sarah Meyers Countless times I've been told I was perceived as stubborn/arrogant/dismissive where what they noticed was me simply being confident. At times I'll try to get the other to at least entertain the thought that I'm very open. Regardless most times I'm met with a lack of willingness to just try. After checking with myself first for possibly engaging in a similar fashion, This tells me that they're the one who's lacking openness. That they're to some degree projecting. I'll table it until they've expressed they're ready to genuinely participate in the conversation.

Chess can be played both ways. You can either memorize procedures and tactics, and try out different ideas using those procedures (Si-Ne), or scan for relevant details on the board and be guided by goals - like controlling the center, activating pieces, getting a check matte, etc (Ni-Se)

as an ISFJ (Si dom) chess player, I only know a few basic tactics since there are always tons of tactics to memorise, etc. so I just stick to a basic one and play like a Ni dom (focusing on checkmate, controlling centre, etc.) I guess thats why she said this analogy wasnt better as I did relate with the Si sailing analogy!

Ni-Se: You know where the destination would be, but you are in fog which makes you only seeing things that are close. Si-Ne: You remember the route but you don't know the exact direction, while you can see distant things so that you can find familiar buoys to fix your direction.

This is so relatable. An ISTJ friend and I (wuth others) are going on a 3 day trip soon. My plan was based on this "time block" strategy. I knew which spots we wanted to go, and had set aside chunks of time for each of them, taking into consideration the travel time while also giving us a bit of buffer. She, on the other hand, had an Excel done for all 3 days, planning for each hour. She had even planned on where we would get our coffee. It is really amazing!

  • @NevertahnProduction

An explorative ISTJ will tend to loosen schedules and let the breeze take them places. Their schedule will go from locking in every detail to simply having a broad time block for each point on the to do list and let go of details like where to get coffee or whatever unless they really want to stop at a specific place... then again everyone has preferences.

I read the title and my first thought was: Ni plans, but it is a plan as we go kind of thing. We formulate based on the information we have and receive in order to achieve our goal. That's how I've always been, so I hated assignments in school that said to make a 5 year plan. Hell if I know! I barely know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow!

Infj here. So true. I kind of felt like a bad "J"-type for not having set routines and being super exact with scheduling things out. Just the thought of doing things the exact same way all the time is imprisoning to me. But I'm also not impulsive or spontaneous at all XD Ni is just showing me the direction and as you said blocks out time for it and the rest just solves itself haha. People who tell me I have to do these exact Si procedures to reach a certain goal is just gaaah. >< it's just two very different ways to work, right?

Si: Have the wind-boat angle optimal for maximum speed (Ne): Don't really care where the boat ends up Ni: Sail to the singular endpoint fastest (Se): Angle and turn the boat however necessary to get there (even if some other direction is faster right now, "ignoring the sensory") Seems that Si is like a "greedy" or locally optimal algorithm, Ni more like a global algorithm (not necessarily optimal). Whichever works better depends on the problem domain. (I did not like sailing)

Chess is a great way to tell apart INTPs (who use Ne and Si) from INTJs (who use Ni and Se) INTJs will: Adjust in the present to set up the kill stroke. More aggressive player. May tell you that you have 11 moves before checkmate. INTP will: Survive in the present to try and get to the endgame where the board is cleared up and the same method as always can be used to close the game (rooks are particularly useful). More defensive player. If they put you in checkmate before the board is relatively empty, you may know you lost before they know they´ve won.

Love the boat analogy. I’ve never sailed, as I live in the mountains. However, I often think of my Ni as a compass for a hiker lost in the woods. As long as you know the general direction, you can navigate yourself around obstacles and find your way. I now realize that the obstacles in my analogy are my Se challenges in real life.

Thank you for this lol I need to send this to my family members. Whenever they ask me questions about what my plans are and what I'm doing. They're always expecting this grand list of steps. I always accomplish my goals in an "unconventional" way to them. I now just say, "you'll see" or "I'm working on it." Younger me used to struggle with desperately (so my parents would know I'm not bs'n) explaining my entire plan causing them to intervene and ruin my flow. I now answer vaguely bc they'll never understand my planning process since I could start in the middle and work my way up to go back to the middle and finish it thru lol.

I'm an INFJ and pretty sure my wife is ISFJ. I can't tell you how many times I've been driving and I start taking a different route to a familiar destination and she is like 'what are you doing?', 'why are you turning here?', 'why don't you just go this way?' (aka, the same way she always goes.) I've always enjoyed shaking things up, even if it means taking an extra 3 or 4 minutes. I guess I like knowing other options in case something happens in the future, like road construction or traffic, I then know how to move around it. But it just drives her crazy.

The combination of Ni (long-term goal and proyection) and Te (efficiency and priority) results in the search for a practical solution that follows unique patterns and make a schedule about the priorities, sometimes we repeat methodologies (especially in household activities) this can be confused with Si, but we do this because we want to want to use the least of time and in the most effective way, but we do not limit ourselves to this, we mostly look for better ways to do the tasks and if we have to replace one habit with another, we do it without thinking twice (is not a harmony in the system that is one of the things Si prioritize) In other words, the Ni-Te/ Te-Ni combination can be confused with Si, because the first uses schedules and certain metodologies, to facilitate the arrival at the goal, and Si too but this is more related to the harmony in the system of the sensory world) Thanks, for the video Lijo :)

Ni/Te is a great combination to get stuff done, it allows for ~some~ flexibility in the process and the end result is still in very much in view (while Ni/Ti as an INFJ makes me stuck in a sort of mental planning sometimes, ideas that I ruminate about and while they influence what I do they're not really pushed into the real world by routines that are consistant).

I LOVE this analogy for so many reasons. I'm an INTJ and believe me I have my master plan. At this point, I know where I'm headed up until and beyond retirement. HOWEVER whenever I try to cement this plan in writing with all the little objectives and timelines in there I feel that this is a counter-intuitive activity for me YET this plan rules everything in my life. This is for the exact reasons that you've stated, especially contingencies. These always come and need to have their own little plans to be dealt with. Ni will always make space for contingencies. When I've tried to 'sensorize' this by trying to bring it all into the concrete world via a known system, even something like a year planner, I feel like imploding. Tbh, it's a waste of time anyway, because it would require even MORE sensory activity always having to refer to the written plan. It's just not how that function works. Trying to Si plan in the Ni realm is like trying to build a statue out of a cloud, it's made of a substance that's more fluid. Kind of like an eagle flying overhead, can't nail it down, but it sees everything!

The sailboat analogy points out a subtle attribute of Ni. While Ni is convergent on the best way to get to the result, it is not static or closed. Ni narrows it down to the best path **right now with availlable data** and expects updates and adjusts. Ni does try to keep the noise down.

So I imagine it this way (INFJ in here xD): Ni is like LiJo said like sailing, the path isn't structtured at all because, like thoughts, the water is in constant change, going back and forth and you can get either get slowed down by them or they push you faster towards your destination. Ni can only guess around how much time would it take to arrive to the destination because of the tides, the wind, etc. neither you know the exact path that you will travel, and even if you are going from point a to point b the path will always change a little. Si on the other hand is like driving a train (I don't know if the word driving fits correctly but I don't really know how it is called), Si dominant users have already a structured path that can only change small things, like if to change from trail a to trail b in intersection 10 to arrive to station blue. The paths never change, they stay the same unless something really unexpected happens.

The sailing metaphor works well to describe Ni general trajectory. As an intj I feel like this might be confusing to others specifically if the goal is a bit far down the road which means it connects a number of dots hence requires time. Also, it makes us move slowly in comparison to others. Frankly I struggle sometimes with this in a world that appreciates fast action, feeling slow can be overwhelming, although I have complete faith in my introverted intuition. Ni-Se user this analogy illuminated a huge area for me, trying to incorporate Si scheduling has not worked for me and in fact all the detail overwhelms and Ti comes in with analysis paralysis and nothing gets done. However instinctively I do feel pulled in towards the goal and I find myself receiving the right inspiration to get over the hurdle as I am faced with it, I want to incorporate a more ‘disciplined’ approach? Not sure yet but for now Rolling with the punches even when it really infuriates people when I am leading. I am happy I’m aware that our stacks serve towards different strengths! 😄

So I've been thinking I'm Se/Ni for a while. This idea of trajectory over procedure actually ties everything together for me. I tried planning out everything to get a coffee one day. It was really hard to do because I always missed some detail in the middle. Of course I adjusted the plan on the fly to fill in those details. I always thought that was my poor Ni, but it was really just a complete lack of Si.

Very off-topic but I loooove this new look on your video! Very aesthetically pleasing and calming, especially as I've recently found out I really like this darker, richer tone in home decor, fashion etc. Care to share how did you do this with the lighting? With edit I can grasp the idea of, but your filming light seems very nice and soft yet precise without being too clear/studio-like.

Thanks! So i have two filming locations based off how late I’m working and on what days. My office has the green screen (and also this nice area I just started using) and my home had the cooler tones/white. But lighting is a factor too because my LED lights are home and the office has my good light kit with tungsten lights and proper diffusers. One thing I have to nail down is the echo in this room!

I am above all these small details (demon Si).... and I will arrive at my destination ...one way or another " in the end ...ISTJ reaches their destignation safely ....and INTJ will be remembered like a Titanic Ship...

Fellow INTJ here. Work in healthcare (psychiatry), a highly protocolised environment, and even though in some cases I see the point of protocols it is also mind numbing to me and it stifles out of the box/creative thinking in the organisation. Healthcare is a very Si environment, as Lindsay put it well, they know from the past if they do x-y-z they will get outcome 1. And they love it. Whereas I sort of intuitively see where I wish to go with a patient (goals that I make together with patient), but when I set them with him/her I only have a vague idea of how I am going to get there. It is then I start reflecting, do my research, analyse the situation + patient and come up with a plan. It is the same in my personal life. I know where I want to go and if I do not, through Ni+Fi (looking inward), I figure it out. But I do not immediately have a step by step plan (like an IKEA manual) of how I am going to get there. That needs to be researched.

Ni is trajectory and Se is new sensory. If Ni is the endpoint of the race, Se is the wind in the sail and moving within the physical boat. The fastest way to the end is positioning angles so you have as little movement (tacks or turns) within the race as possible. The movement, wind, additional “stuff” is Se.

Hey LiJo, do you have a video about being yourself as an INTJ. I've been deep into mbti and everyone have this stereotypes about INTJs being this and that, and honestly It got me to the point that I'm operating on what the whole mbti community states. I'm INTJ yes.. but I still struggle with identity, like, I don't know how to operate in a given situation, like the "should I do this?" and I attempted it, but sometimes I did it because I read about it and just followed what they say an INTJ is most likely to do... I felt like every action I made is because I read about myself, but not me being myself... or am I just confused. edit: the thing is, I feel like even if you make a video, it feels like I'm still following the "INTJ way"

  • @InternetLiJo

I love this explanation To me it seems like the " Law of attraction " You don't need to know HOW you get there step by step, you just KNOW you are going to get there , just like going to a totally new destination with the car , the GPS will take care of the Si specific procedure , based on where you wanna go Ni , but dominant Ni - Se will probably prefer not using GPS and just pay attention to some (Se) surrounding details like the sun orientation , (Se) signs on the road with the Ni goal in mind. Some of the most fascinating times in my life were when I had to accomplish something new and challenging and said : I don't know how ( Si ) I'm going to do it BUT , I'm going to achieve this ( Ni ) on time , efficiently , I trust my mind, the universe, my intuition that I will find the best way And then I surprise even myself Because I achieve the whatever I want to achieve without necessarily knowing how . As an ENFP, sometimes I fall in the trap of Si procedures failing to see the goal and after a while I'm like , fuck , it's so tiring and all this small steps precision is not actually the most efficient way to get there , and when I remind myself the clear destination and trust the unconscious taking care of procedure, it all works fine .
