Does it Pay to Reload .410 Shotgun Shells?

Ғылым және технология

Of all the shotgun shell sizes the little .410 bore makes the most sense to reload.

Another thing to bear in mind when considering costs is whether you already load for other gauges. In that case, and depending on what you're shooting the .410 for, you can share primers and shot with the other gauge(s) and that's one or two less components you have to buy separately.

Some things are constant with reloading costs regardless of the gauge (primers, wads) while others like shot and powder can very the cost of reloads considerably.

I priced up the components in the UK and it works out £1 cheaper per 25 .410. If I did some shopping around I could maybe save a little more. So for now I will just buy them. This is still useful advice though, I intend to make up a little reloading kit and have the powder, shot and primers, it would be reassuring to have the ability to reload if there was a massive price hike, or something made .410 hard to get. Thanks for the info.

You did the right thing to price components in your local area. Some folks get good prices on components, others pay way too much.

I have been reloading .410 shells for 3 years with a homemade tool I made. Remove the primer, clean it up and seat a new primer. I use 2400. Powder, shot cup, and shot. Cardboard on top and I use a tool that rolls the rim with a drill. The only thing I don't do is resize but since I use it in the same shotgun I haven't had a problem. The only shotgun currently worth reloading. Good to see you putting videos out still.

314299 Shooting Channel That's the only thing I did buy. Until then I used just a shot card and a dab of white glue. That worked well. I can't take credit for the idea. I came across it in "The Backwoodsman". I can reload a shell for 0.25 compared to purchasing one for 0.75. And bear in my mind I just use the reloads in my single shot for grouse.

I'm really surprised that you don't have a shot maker. Making your own shot is about a cheap as you can get. It works fine for busting clay targets and small game hunting. I wound research getting just a ladle to house the tippets in the size you want, You could use just a cheap stump burner as a heat source. I can make #8, #9 #7 1/2. Real money saver. Great video!! At the moment it is true that components are expensive and/or hard to get, however it is also difficult and expensive to get loaded 410 shells. Hopefully with time the situation will change and components and shells will get back to a more "normal" situation.

My local shooting range only allows slugs. I started to cast my own lead 12 gauge slugs and I also picked up a few hundred empty 410 hulls at that same range. I read some place online that you can fill a worn out 9mm brass case with melted lead and load it into a 410 shell to act as a slug. The 9mm case is small enough to pass through a full choke. Have you ever tried doing that ?

Have you run into any shotgun shell or rifle round where it does not pay to reload? When I do the math I find that reloading 223 Rem saves some money but not as much as I would like. If I take the cost of the dies and press into account, it will take me a long time to break even. I enjoy doing it, though, so that makes it worth it.

  • @314299

There is no saving to be had on loading 7.62x39mm (compared to surplus ammo), or 12 gauge 1-1/8 ounce shells. As you noted there is very little savings to be had loading .223, or 9mm (if you load jacked bullets). As always it boils down to how much you have to pay for components, you have to shop around and buy in bulk to get the best deals.

  • @314299

    @314299

    6 жыл бұрын

That depends on how much you shoot and how much the components cost in your area. If you only shoot a little reloading is probably not worth it, if you shoot a few thousand shells a year the per box savings add up. Where I live Walmart wants $35 for 100 shells, so reloading is worth it for me, if they were $20 per 100 I would just buy them.

I bought a carton of them today, they were $65 (Canadian $) plus tax for 1000. That is about $47 in US funds. That's over double what they cost when the video was made. On the other hand .410 shells are almost impossible to get at the moment so that makes reloading all the more attractive, if you can get components.

Never use the powder from 12 gauge shells to reload .410's! Powders appropriate for use in the .410 shell are the slowest of shotgun powders, while those used in 12 gauge shells tend to be very fast burning, use of such powder in a 410 would cause excessive pressure that might possibly destroy the gun and injure the shooter.

Lucky you! I live in Illinois, and my local "Gun Club" seems to be fairly well populated with Democrats, and I just don't see the savings you see. Plus, the trap ranges in my area cost $300/year + a cost per line for trap or skeet -- this is expensive, too. (BTW: I really laughed when you quoted you price for Primers!!!, This is 2023 -- Primers seem to be holding steady at 2-3 TIMES what they _used_ to cost)

Some of the guys who run the local club here are interested in economy when it comes to shooting so the club pretty much sells components at cost. As for "Democrats" here we have "Liberals", which is like a Democrat only several times worse and there are a couple of them at the club who I occasionally tell off for their stupidity and corruption. As I live in a fairly small place I think our club is a bit like other clubs were 40+ years ago. I had to look to see when I did this video and being as it was eight years ago there has been a heck of change in component prices, especially primers. Now a package of 1000 is now $75.

Brass cases are fine for low volume shooters but they are really not really suitable for those who tend to shoot a lot of 410. For instance competitive skeet shooters will generally have flats of shells ready to go to a shoot, that is not something that is practical to do with brass case shells.

I wrote the maker and suggested the "die" be lengthened so it fits over an open vise so that ya just flip the die over and push it out. He got a little defensive with me over the suggestion. It would have cost him less than $1 to make that change. The optional primer seater is okay...not great...just okay. Because of the sizer shortcomings, I looked around and found a Lee Loader for about $40 and later a MEC Jr. for .410 and paid about $100 for it.

Hulls are 5 cents for 2.5 inch or 10 cents for 3 inch single used. I use these at least 10 times, so negligible cost. Free at every range, so buying is just a convenience option. Brass never wears out, but I prefer plastic for my loader.
