As someone who lives on the gulf coast...When you tape your windows, its not to make it unbreakable, but rather so it doesn't shatter so very much. And you normally put large X's on the outside and inside. If you are trying to make it where you windows don't break. You buy Plywood and tack them over your windows.

This. I don't know why this confuses so many people. It's as if they've never heard of laminated glass before. That's what the tape is mimicking, but extremely cheaply and not see thru. It's not going to prevent your windows from shattering or objects coming through. But it will prevent shards of glass from blowing through your house if it does break. In my experience, it has actually prevented smaller objects from coming through. The glass stays together, but gets dented in and held through the night. I personally use painters tape and do full coverage, outside and in.

@@Cthulhu013 Well that's because it's settled science by now. It's why car windows are laminated, it causes glass to shatter in a safer way. No one bothers doing experiments on it anymore because that work was done long ago when car manufacturers studied it decades ago. Although it doesn't need to really be said but, there's a lot of myths that still exist even after over hundreds of years of them being disproven thoroughly. For example there's people who genuinely believe the earth is flat...

Yeah this tape is just meant to keep large chunks of glass from flying through your house durring huricanes and keep the glass more together so there is also less of a mess to clean after. It is NOT meant to stop things from coming through the window, its just meant to make the glass of the window somewhat safer, and like others said you can just use any type of ductape or similar tape. He will probably be redoing this video cause he completely missed the point of the tape, although realistically any tape can do the job its just that this tape is good since it doesnt leave a residue on the window so its easier to clean after it all blows over.

Depends on the design of the window, some have the screen on the inside, some have the screen on the outside, both exist. The bigger issue is that window design only puts a screen on the moveable pane of a 2 pane window, the fixed pane isn't designed to have a screen on it, so a screen would only protect 1 of the 2 panes of the window at best.

@@Cthulhu013 that's actually dangerous. The point of taping your windows, is if it does break the small shards will stick to the tape; kinda like why car windshields break the way they do. The reason why you tape the inside is not only to prevent the rain and wind from ripping it off, but to ensure that if it gets blown in the glass will be directed and fall away from the tape. It's less sticky by design, you want the big glass pieces to come off outside the house, otherwise you have a sheet filled with broken glass that could come apart and screw someone's day up. I've personally seen stories where people got killed from improperly taping their windows.

I've been thru 2 hurricanes. One as a child, and one a few years ago. The main problem we had at our spot was rocks from the gravel driveway hitting the house. Also shingles, insulation, and fragments of wood spread everywhere when your neighbors roof starts popping off and the trees begin to snap. Standing in it is a death sentence if you're around trees or structures. From someone who has seen the damage of a Cat 4, I can tell you with certainty that tape would be helpful for stopping glass from spraying into the house, but its not stopping anything sizeable from coming in. 9 out of 10 times, if the storm is severe, people who are in the path are typically aware which direction the most damaging winds will be coming from, so they simply use plywood. If your plywood is installed properly and it still gets ripped off, then more than likely the whole house is going to get screwed up. The amount of pressure inside the house and the sound outside during 140mph wind gusts is insane and something you can't just explain to somebody. At around 100mph, your ears begin to pop. Even the toilet and sink drains make whining and slurping noises. The house we were at was condemned, as the water and wind damage was catastrophic. Luckily we had a basement to hide out in during the worst of it, because all the rooms except 1 were completely screwed, and you could see the sky in the kitchen and living room. ✌

My only child dedicated his life as an Officer, a Ranger, Special Forces and served in Afghanistan several tours, as well as Mylasia, Indonesia, Australia and others. He is just retired, and he came back MUCH different than he left. He is struggling terribly. Many people have no idea that surviving back at home is often much more difficult for our soldiers than abroad. Thank you for helping bring light to this issue.

I couldn’t imagine living in a hurricane prone area like Florida or anywhere on the lower east coast. Those storms come every year and cause so much damage and destruction and every year you have to baton down the hatches and board up your windows. Figures that you have to deal with all of that to live in a beautiful place.

Tyler, I like many others skip through your commercials, but I actually did watch this one and I will most certaintly support the mission. You see, I am an active duty service member serving in Japan, but my job involves air cargo (onloading and offloading aircraft) and about once or twice a month, we will have to upload caskets (aka Human remains) onto aircrafts. The vast majority of these people either died by suicide or by a work accident. Recently, I read a story where a navy sailor jumped overboard on his ship. While this is nothing new (sadly), what did catch my eye, was that this guy was an 19 year old from my hometown which is Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was just 19 years old when he jumped, I am almost 29 and it honestly put a tear to my eye. Most of us who upload human remains onto airplanes do not show much emotion, its apart of our job. But recently I heard a story from another air force base that a airman broke down and cried when they had to do it and it breaks my heart honestly, because you know your helping to send a service member home to their family. I love watching your videos man, my wife and I binge watch the hell out of them and we appreciate what you do.

And do a test with horizontal tape overlaid with vertical tape (for strength). I think the results would be more surprising. Floridian here that has never evacuated and always rode out a storm.

It's not meant to keep the "glass on the outside" or prevent your window from breaking, Hurricane tape is designed to prevent the shards of glass becoming deadly shrapnel when your window shatters. Much better to need to sweep up glass on the floor than watch a family member or pet become perforated from the glass.

Metric conversions Double duct tape: 123lb - 55.8kg Double hurricane tape: 225lb - 102.06kg Since this video is probably mostly watched by Americans, the conversions to metric aren't super important, so no criticism at all to Tyler. Metric is basically never used, and I really appreciate him including them for us, but a couple were either listed wrong or not at all. Keep making these videos!
