I truly wish you could see the person I was before I found your channel. I have learned so much. I'm still in the low buy and waiting to buy clothes till I hit my goal weight. I have better tools in my wheelhouse now, when I do. So thank you!

Realizing how much polyester is a sensory nightmare for me (it feels really slimy to me, I don't know how else to describe it) really changed my shopping habits. Now I ask myself a bunch of questions before I even try something on once I think it is cute, such as: What is the fiber content? Where do the seams fall, and will they rub anywhere annoying? How well constructed is this, and how often will I need to repair it? And then I try it on, every time, even if it is a staple being repurchased. And polyester is in everything, even most jeans these days. It is so rare that I find something that I like the way it looks on me, that it doesn't contain polyester, that it doesn't have seams that rub, and that I feel like the price and the construction quality are in line, that I often can't even find what I need, so I go without until I can. Because good enough for now is no longer good enough for me!

Fiber is the FIRST thing I look at! And I’m glad you brought this up! This?? Should be the top issue ! Or at least #2 guideline! I’m probably the oldest lady here 😅but I remember at 5 ( yes 1975 ) my mum spanking me ( it was the 70s but yes she was def abusive) i didn’t have the extensive vocab to explain why I hated these pants she wanted me to put on! It’s a core memory of my childhood now! And I realized ( wow I probably had, add and had sensory issues, back then ) I remember crying “mom nooo I hate how they feel!! 😢but she had to go to work and I had to come with her! Anyway ramble over I feel your comment!😅 Fabric should be a top issue when breaking up with fast fashion! Also don’t forget size! Mid to plus gals? Do NOT have as much of a selection as the smaller sized gals. I was plus until recently so I remember how hard it eas when trying to buy second hand!

OMG 70 items of clothing!! I purposely went shopping last year to buy a new wardrobe and I think I brought in 20 pieces last year. I always struggle with my wardrobe. I can’t imagine being content with my clothes ever. Shopping is so stressful for me, it makes me exhausted and I hate it. I’m sensitive and I hate clothes that don’t fit or rub into me in weird ways. I hate baggy clothes and o hate tight clothes ;) I’m impossible to please I guess. I thought losing weight would help me find clothes that fit, and it did a little bit, but I still feel so uncomfortable in clothes. I would never buy clothes online, pretty much 99% of the time they don’t fit me and I have to return them. Sorry I complain! Seems like a problem I could get over but it will require me to spend the time to go shopping

The other thing about clothing that always gets me is how people always talk about only having the items I need for my life. However, my life is made up of a ton of different activities, which often feel like they require different clothing. In a week, I might work at 3 different jobs, as well as taking in auditions, working out, working hard taking care of my chickens, garden, dog, etc. If I have to have a wardrobe that encompasses the perfect clothes for all the things I do, it would be 5 times the size of a wardrobe that I would be comfortable choosing from without decision fatigue. Learning that it is perfectly okay to not have the perfect full wardrobe for every different thing in my life, but instead look for pieces that multitask for different areas of my life was super helpful for me. I am not a wealthy/idle person who needs or has time to change multiple times a day, so I can instead get dressed based on what works for all the things I need to do that day.

Would loooove that threadup video. Edit: but I also love the goals you're setting about consuming less 😅 I personally don't buy a lot of clothes, but when I do, I tend to forget that secondhand is an option, so that's why I say I'm interested in that topic. 😊

I buy about 90% secondhand for clothing (probably closer to 75% if I include accessories, especially jewelry). Even so, it’s taken effort to reduce the number of pieces I add to my wardrobe each year. I had a similar experience to yours last year: I felt like I made huge strides in reducing my numbers in 2022, I wanted to push myself to buy that quantity and ideally a little less in 2023, but I was unable to. Funny enough, I could definitely cite some poorly considered ThredUP purchases as part of that bobble (those final sale items will get ya!). This year, I’ve been really pleased with the markedly slower pace I’ve had with wardrobe additions. I like your idea of having a range of good/better/best. The approach I took was picking a target number and breaking down that number into categories: I knew I wanted to limit my number of new tops, so I set a limit of 5 new tops; I had several accessories on my wishlist, so I set aside 10 for accessories; etc. plus 5 pieces I’m calling “wildcards.” I also went through my wishlist and tried to be realistic about whether or not it would be valuable to me and my wardrobe to add each thing this year, or if I could wait til next year, or if I could wait indefinitely. It really helped me have a clearer picture of my goal rather than just having just a goal number as a parameter for my purchasing.

When I watched your video about no new clothes, I was taken aback by the way it was no NEW clothes instead of NO new clothes. It made me feel like there was a big loophole. I'm not super into clothes but I'm also not super happy with how I look right now. That was the trigger for me to start buying lots and lots of makeup, but your videos are helping. 7 days with only buying a replacement for my cleanser!

I think there's a lot of way someone could undertake the process of breaking up with fast fashion. The first month could have been different if I entertained the quantity component. Regardless, long term no-buys aren't a tool I like for helping me learn to shop differently.

As a thrifter, I absolutely over consume - there's the idea of scarcity, if I don't get this now, it'll be gone never to be seen again. And, it's a bargain. And, I LOVE the thrill of the chase. So this year, I decided to do Buy Nothing New Month, where I didn't buy anything, not just new items - which I thought was a breeze. So I did the 75 hard style challenge and fell off the wagon *HARD* right near the end 😅 it made me seriously question my purchasing habits and the why/what/where/how 😂 Needless to say, I am a work in progress, but I know I need to scrutinise my habits and engage in much more conscious consumption. ❤

Maybe it could be a good thing that you only have 6 left til you hit your cap! Because then you can really examine each thing you’re considering buying and asking if you want it to take up one of those few remaining spots. And honestly, maybe it would be easier to stick to if you limit online purchases as much as possible-for me, that free shipping threshold is a real killer.

I’m a librarian now but use to be a fashion major ! Ha I really changed! But I still love to watch KZread gals with capsule collections people that teach me about stores that are more ethical learning about fiber, etc.! I don’t say no to myself really if I truly love something that’s all natural and gives meaning or fills a space in my wardrobe. But I always always take screen shots of new styles I’m in love with, and always search online second hand first! I’ve found so many amazing things this way and saved soo much money! Love watching shows like this to get more ideas.

I highly recommend the Unfit Unfair Unfashionable report by the hot or cool institute. I read that last year, and it’s great food for thought, it gives a ballpark of how many items we sjould have in our wardrobe, though it doesn’t say how many items should enter our wardrobe each year.

Thank you for mentioning that article, it was an interesting read. I saw this section about how many extra items, it says; If no other actions are implemented, such as repairing/mending, washing at lower temperatures, or buying second-hand, purchases of new garments should be limited to an average 5 items per year for achieving consumption levels in line with the 1.5-degree target.
