Saigon 1964. "Fragrant Palm Leaves" Thich Nhat Hanh wrote: "Youth is a time for seeking the truth. Years ago I wrote in my journal that even if it destroys you, you must hold to the truth. I knew early on that finding truth is not the same as finding happiness. You aspire to see the truth, but once you have seen it, you cannot avoid suffering. Otherwise, you've seen nothing at all. You are still hostage to arbitrary conventions set up by others. People judge themselves and others based on standards that are not their own. In fact, such standards are mere wishful thinking, borrowed from public opinion and common viewpoints. One thing is judged as good and another as bad, one thing virtuous and another evil, one thing true and another false. But when the criteria used to arrive at such judgments are not your own, they are not the truth. Truth cannot be borrowed. It can only be experienced directly. The fruit of exploration, suffering, and the direct encounter between one's own spirit and reality- the reality of the present moment and the reality of ten thousand lifetimes. For each person, it is different. And it is different today than it was yesterday." When we discover something to be true today through our own direct experience, we will see that our previous assumptions were wrong, or at least incomplete. Our new way of looking transcends yesterday’s desire, prejudices, narrow-mindedness, and habits. We see that to use the golden molds and emerald yardsticks of yesterday’s understanding are nothing less than slavery or imprisonment. When we attain a new understanding of reality, it is impossible to accept things we know to be false. Our actions will be based on our own understanding, and we will follow only those rules we have tested through our own direct experience. We will discard false rules and conventions of the current social order. But we have to expect that society will turn on us with a vengeance. Human history is filled with the tragedies caused by that vengeance. History teaches that we die if we oppose the system, yet many individuals continue to challenge the darkness, despite the danger in doing so. Those who pursue the truth are members of the community of truth seekers and reformers throughout time and space. They do not resign themselves to a collective fate that offers no laurels. The faint beams of light that appear after the desolation of the storm made me feel even more alone and abandoned. I felt the unbearable pain of a woman who is about to give birth to a child she already knows will be sentenced to death. She is consumed by despair, inconsolable and humiliated. She knows that she is with child, but a child who is already condemned to die. And she knows she will have to witness her child’s death. There is no way to avoid her fate. Why couldn’t she give birth to a healthy, sweet child like other mothers, a child who would give her hope, pride, and joy, a child who would earn her the praises of others? But we have to stand up for the truth. We cannot just gather moss like an old stone or assume a false self, once we see the truth. … As a child, I always outgrew the clothes my mother sewed for me. I can preserve those garments, fragrant with childish innocence and my mother’s love, in a trunk for memory’s sake. But I must have new, and different clothes now to fit who I have become. We must sew our own clothes and not just accept society’s ready-made suit. The clothes I make for myself may not be stylish or even accepted. But it is more than a matter of clothes. It is a question of who I am as a person. I reject the yardstick others use to measure me. I have a yardstick of my own, one I’ve discovered myself, even if I find myself in opposition to public opinion. I must be who I am. I cannot force myself back into the shell I’ve just broken out of. This is a source of great loneliness for me. Perhaps I could persuade my dearest friends to accompany me on my voyage through space, but it might be dizzying for them, and might even incite feelings of hatred or resentment. Would they force me to return to earth, back to the illusory plane of old hopes, desires, and values, all in the name of friendship? What good would that be for any of us? -That is why I want to burn down the huts where my friends dwell. I want to incite chaos to help them break through the shells that confine them. I want to smash the chains that bind them and topple the gods that restrain them. For us to grow, petty amusements or even sorrows must not dominate us. A free person neither adheres to nor violates life’s rules. The most glorious moment in life is to witness a friend’s return, not exactly a return, but an infinitely exquisite moment when he emerges from the chaos caused by the annihilation of his last refuge. There he is, liberated from the hard shells of a thousand lifetimes, standing nobly in the brilliant light cast by his burning refuge. At that moment, he will lose everything, but in the same moment, he possesses everything. Beginning at that moment, we are truly present for each other.............. Thich Nhat Hanh...

One of the best teachings if not the best from Thay and Dharma teachers I have ever listened to. A lot of wisdoms can be found here. I love how Thay started with the other Buddhist school’s approach (that acknowledges the existence of hell) and actually applauded their usefulness and then proceeded to Buddhism history and how Buddha true teaching was. His message on the happiness is here and now also answered the questions because we can experience heaven right now right here with mindfulness, and if we don’t be so mindful, we are actually pulled in ‘hell’ with a lot of suffering such as anxiety and worrying. His last message on the tolerance and helping others follow a better path is also wonderful.

It doesn't really matter what is the truth mate. It only matters if it makes one suffer or not. If the thought of heaven and hell causes suffering, one should practice mindfulness. If it doesn't, then I don't know 😂 The point is, as long as it doesn't make you suffer in the here and now, it's all good. God bless.

Thank you for Uploading. That was helpful for me. It also fits to other religious education like Christian or Muslim. There is the teaching for beginners and there is the teaching for more advanced humans - and there is everything in between. I'm still wondering about the existence of a soul - at least in the first moments after death, as there exist these Near-Death-Experiences. I have read some books by Thich Nhat Hanh and I never found him speak about phenomena, which are not yet explained by our science. He seems to avoid it. I could imagine, that he does that, for us not to seek so much for exiting wonders. (Like Out-of-body-experiences, telepathy... etc) As he says: The biggest wonder already is - just walking on the earth. 🚶 Touching the ground with our feet. For me - it would help me, if he would just say: Yes, there are these things, but I don't see much benefit in talking about it. Thank you once more, dear PlumVillage-Community! For Your Work and Love. Greetings Christian CreeYuWan

I had an intense awakening, went through a psych ward to get my understanding. I don't have the energy right now to describe in full or make a case for what I experienced, but I've come to realize what we really respond to is power. There is absolutely nothing wrong with power, the Sun is more powerful than anyone could truly comprehend, we can only put up stats and "facts" about it on a piece of paper or a screen. Yet the Sun is what allows all life to exist on Earth, to grow and die, and to continue on. It's also powerful enough to carry along 8 or so planets on a ride around an even larger sun in a more vast solar system just called a galaxy. Imagine if in a sort of prophetic vision you were able to meet the full power of the Sun in the matter of time compressed into about 3 seconds. My life flashed before my eyes and everything I ever learned about spirituality and religion and everything I've ever done in my entire life flashed before my eye and everything made sense when meeting this force, a force I'd say equivalent if not greater than the Sun of our current solar system. I couldn't tell if I was meeting God, Satan, an Great Grandfather Alien, or whatever else, all I responded to was its power, which is utterly, and unspeakably mind melting. I basically looked inside the Ark of the Covenant, or inside the brief case in Pulp Fiction (haha not really, but maybe). I no longer believe in Heaven or Hell, just a never ending flux of moving around, and I'm sure I'll have to go through the horror of that day an infinite amount of times over in the future, but I feel that moment is only like a train station stop on the ride of life. Even that horrifically beautiful moment I experienced passes. The great lesson I have to bring back from that moment is that even though what I can only describe as the Big Buddha or the Big G, even though it's horrifying, luckily it is merciful and somehow I made it through it and I am quite convinced it's only a pit stop, but the road never ends.

Chantel Both. Now have quite an alien type view towards everything going on. From my experience, Christianity is just one of the many metaphors pointing towards the real thing which is present constantly, religion is just the equivalent to a ruler or numbers counting items, the ruler or number is laid over top the real thing, but the ruler or number is not the thing itself. When I experienced what I did, I saw everything for a brief moment, time condensed into just an infinitely thinly sliced moment and I recognized that “God” and the “Devil” are one entity, it’s all just consciousness, night and day, male female, etc. Christianity is just one labeling system. But experiencing it first hand the way I did was ABSOLUTELY horrifying.

Kelly B how absolutely intense it was. Before that never understanding God or how close or what it even is or the fact that God isn’t “up there” but is everything and having that revealed first hand, up close, in the way that it happened swept the entire carpet of what I thought reality was out from under me. I was quite literally “born again” with a new pair of goggles to see the world with.

From what I have read zen buddhism unlike Christianity teaches about the abstract concept of "impermanence" of the soul. Meaning that there is nothing permanent even in the deepest part of our soul and thus we are constantly changing and turn into a completely different person tomorrow compared to what we were yesterday. Even though it may still seem to us that we are still the same person that we were 20 years back, despite the changes in our surroundings and circumstances.

Heaven an hell are both here and in other planes of existence. Focus on the good an don't judge the other because it serves a purpose. Find the beauty in Everything an treat all living things with love an respect. If you look for good you will find it. If you look for bad you will find it. If you burn your hand on the stove find the good in the situation like that's a good thing that pain warned you an brought it to your attention that your hand was getting burned so you moved it an will be more careful. That's incredible! Just last night, I was holding a sharp knife in my hand to cut some vegetables, & I was worried I might cut myself & that exact thought came to me, the knife can be used for a good purpose, or to harm. & I was thinking of the fire we use to cook, it can be used in a good way or to burn yourself. I was thinking of many other scenarios of the dualistic nature of reality, such as even the beautiful Sun 🌞, which brings so much beauty & happiness, & health but can also cause much damage in some cases (such as even skin cancer)... It's very interesting food for thought. But I don't understand how for example someone (or various people, when one leaves, another one comes) continuously attacking you (perhaps not physically), hating you for no reason, being violent etc is serving a purpose? I understand Thay mentioned to be compassionate but they wish to use you & besides, they neither appreciate nor understand love & compassion.... I've tried that route & didn't change anything. Our wise teachers say look for the lesson in each situation, but I cannot find it. Perhaps it's right in front of me & I can't see it. I would like to ask if someone on the outside can see it. They say look within, & perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places but the only explanation I can find is it's to become strong & be a victim no more. Or perhaps there's a part of me which I can't see which is like that.

@@akakonoha Awesome, thank you! Yes even fear and pain are not bad, they serve to warn us of danger. Of course they can also be used for harm. I believe I can answer your question about people who do harm to others. We should treat them with Love IF we believe they might influence them to change how they treat others, but if we believe they will continue to hurt others we should not waste on them what could be given to others who deserve it more. As for the purpose of their existence it's because nothing can exist without it's opposite. A cup cannot exist with an inside but no outside. If there were only good without any contrast would we be able to know it or appreciate it. If only white without contrast or shades how could there be a picture. We have to focus on the good, yet if we never look at suffering that means looking the other way only concerned with self an not helping others. The paradox of Life.

The opposite of love is hatred, Peace/Caos light/dark life/death build/destroy warm/cold burn/frozed Courage/Fear Master/Slave Rich/poor happy/sad Freedom/restrained acid/basic Alpha/Omega begining/end, this is the very rule of the budhist's way. I believe into a light portal and a dark portal that you have the liberty to choose where you want to go after your death or roam around, see what you want to see or rebirth. Why cant we just be born then suffer int his life and wake up here and save your progreesthen get reincarnated but you awareness doesn't decline again , the fact that Ill have to be reborn again and totally forget my realistations rolling around in agony in the human relm to then rewawaken and have it happen millions of times over is devastating to me. Or better yet ,when we realise our egos and bodies and time is illusion why cant we just decide to wake up then. Or if we have to experience the contrast of darkness to feel the light of our own being why does it have to alst sooo long and be so complicated. I would kill myself , but I Know that will make things so much worse , theres been horrific things happen to me in my life but even still im surrounded by beuty , loving beings , the sun the sky , kindness and compassion flows through me so I must have done something good before but Im scared of hell , life was so much easier when I was basically an atheist , atheism is the easy way out :( The true nature of reality is far more beautiful and horrific ( horrific beyond wildest human imagination)

The Blessed Virgin told me that they were those who declared themselves atheists or who follow False and pagan religions. He then showed me so many seemingly very normal; in their souls there was like a burning ember, mostly in the bodies of teenagers and women, and I understood that infernal spirits were hiding in them... The Blessed Mother suffers a lot when she shows me these souls, they are her children and she wants to save them. but nothing can be done against their will...... ......I arrived at a dark and hard land, which ended in a steep ravine, not very deep and the angel stopped me on the edge. Below was a lake from which i could not see the other shore. The waters had a kind of bitumen on the surface that burned and created smoke. it looked like stagnant water covered with a layer of small insects. It looked like a horrible swamp, but the angel explained to me that every soul that is condemned to eternal death comes there..... The soul remembers everything from its life on earth, then enters the lake water where a demon takes her for himself and pierces it from end to end with fire, and in addition to the intense pain, the soul forget everything; From then on, he will only have the torment of his sins, the immense pain of having lost the light and peace in the Glory of God forever, the tremendous hatred towards everyone and everything, the deep hatred of God and the Holy Virgin, whose name he cannot pronounce, and he hates and has a horrible rage towards herself and the demons..... When she has crossed the lake, she will be in hell for eternity and will be continuously devoured by the demons, to be spewed out and again plunged into the fire and to be torn and swallowed again and so on forever! If they could shout to someone their torment, their pain, grief, anguish, deep hatred rage, and his horrible and eternal thirst, they would do anything to convince everyone to believe in that tremendous infernal reality. They would scream desperately to make everyone believe that hell exists. but the demons would stop her, inducing in her so much hatred and rage that in the end she herself would want everyone to be there. with her, suffering and suffering for all eternity..... Daughter, tell your brothers what you have seen, those who do not believe in God, hate and reject them, those sinners who do not believe in the existence of hell and to all those who do not believe that there is an afterlife, death and a fair trial before the Righteous Judge. The moment is decisive, eternity is at stake, do not be like children, do not play with Divine Justice, seek the Lord while he allows himself to be found"..........
