1 month later and I have finally gotten around to seeing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem! It looks absolutely fantastic, the characters are reinvented well, the direction is great, but the story. The writing in this movie.. It's just... It's a Nickelodeon Movie, hopping on the new animation trend of mimicking the likes of Spider Verse and Puss In Boots The Last Wish and The Bad Guys and Mitchells vs Machines. But this movie is not as good as those inspirations. Let's do a deep dive of everything TMNT: Mutant Mayhem does right, and how it just does not hit in as satisfying a way by the time it reaches it's ending. Prepare for apparently, a pretty hot take. Oops!

...Or y'know. Maybe it was just being safe for being a first stab at a new reboot. Since a sequel seems pretty likely, let's just hope they let the writers spread their wings a little more...

That was like a CinemaSins level of critical misunderstanding, and they maintain that they're only pretending to be morons for clout... or something. Like if we give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that he was yawning during that line so he completely missed it, why in the world would he focus so much on it and claim that a scene was missing, rather than thinking "Gee, I guess I missed something?"

this film is NOT copying the Spider-Verse style. I'm sick of hearing that. Spider-Verse may have inspired lots of films to have an experimental look where SOME aspects are similar like combining 2D and 3D, using smears and multuples, and animation on 2s, but none of them have the EXACT same style Spider-Verse tries to look like a comic book come to life. Mutant Mayhem tries to look like a teenager's notebook sketches come to life and it works so well. its style embraces imperfection even more than Spider-Verse by having the film look very scribble-y and messy and making almost every character design ugly and abstract (in the best way possible). It makes them all look so unique and distinct and you can tell what their personality is when looking at them

Dazz, i love your videos man but i don't agree that there isn't a plot. Idk if you were tired and like half asleep, idk if you just weren't paying attention or something but 1. Splinter outright said something along the lines of "as soon as we stop superfly from hurting the humans and April, you stop leaving the sewers and stay out of trouble!" 2. The reason why superfly mutated was outwardly spoken, mondo gecko literally said something like "uh dudes, what happens when a supermachine made to mutate animals blows up in the ocean where there's fish?" And 3. At least in this movie, there was a small change of character in them (which was once again was outwardly spoken, when leo and April said that what they were doing was done for selfish reasons (also probably when raph said Leo sounded like an actual leader)) because it was like you said an origin story AND it was also about being accepted. Also the animation style is more along the lines of puss in boots but like the animators said "it's supposed to be a sort of hand drawn kid's artstyle" due to the scribbles misshapen proportions etc

When Splinter realizes he shares Superfly's view of humans as irredeemable, he realizes the poison at the center of that view and resolves to give his son's a chance at happiness. Sure it was ham-fisted but it was there. I also really liked how April was determined to never be on camera again, but when the turtles needed her she crashed a broadcast and pushed through her anxiety even though she still vomited.

I can only think of a couple points in the movie where I would call the writing is straight up bad. Otherwise, I can't think of any plots hole, the characters were consistent, motivations were clear, etc. An argument I can somewhat agree with is a shortage of depth in Mutant Mayhem's story and characters. That is not to say that there is lack of depth in Mutant Mayhem. Take Leonardo. He is the "straight arrow" character, the "Boy Scout". He is the most mature of the four, he wants to do the right thing, he is a romantic, and he wants to be a good example to his brothers. But, like them, he is lonely. He loves his siblings, but he is a different person than them, he has different interests. He wants to be a part of the human world as much as they do. He is also sensitive and does not want to be seen as "not cool", so despite his moral compass he sometimes gives into peer pressure. He is a layered character.

It forgives a light story, but not bad writing. Look at Mario for example, visually looks gorgeous and accurate to a very appealing world everyone loves, but it is very light on story. Who cares tho, it was a fun time. Turtles had a deeper story, but the writing was a flat at times and felt like it was trying too hard to be modern. But again, like Mario, we love this world and characters, and the animation was great, so at the end of the day if you had a fun time, why knock it.

I know I’m biased with this movie as a lifelong TMNT fan, but honestly I feel like you were being unfairly harsh on this movie. As a young person who’s struggled to be accepted, this movie really resonated with me. It’s fine if you didn’t like some of the references humor and the ending Kaiju battle, but saying that the writing wasn’t tight or that it was just flat out bad is not fair imo, even if it wasn’t the best. Edit: okay I realized I should clarify that I meant it resonated with my experiences from when I was young, I’m currently in my 20s lol which I guess is still young, but more young adult

Really horrible take my guy. Why did you use it being an origin and reboot as a negative but then praise movies like ITSV which is also an origin and a reboot? Also why complain about it being an origin at all?? We’ve mostly had tmnt cartoons for the last decade, the most recent movies were really bad. Getting a new modern take for a new modern audience with the origin doesn’t seem like a a big problem. The “cringe dialogue” was handled surprisingly well and fit the movie perfectly because the cast were actual teenagers acting like actual teenagers. Calling this movie soulless is crazy. Idk wtf you’re on. You even explain immediately afterwards that the movie does have heart so idk wtf you talking about. Splinter tells the turtles that they’ll go home AFTER defeating Superfly. And Once again tf are you on rn? Super Duper Fly was fucking hilarious and IceCubes delivery was amazing. Tf is wrong with the villain being pretty silly? I don’t see how that somehow takes away from the compelling storytelling of the movie. (Also you said it twice lmao) Did you fall asleep at the end? We do see all the animals running away, we do see Cynthia Utrom at the end, we do see the aftermath of superfly. You constantly talk as if the movie is writing itself into a corner with some of its choices, then get mad at it teasing the sequels??? “It’s the new boss baby design” and “it’s not smart” is so disrespectful to the hard work of the animators, writers and cast. I’m pretty sure you even know that because immediately afterwards you say it does have passion and love in it.. bro💀 Unlike the “boss baby” style you keep mentioning, the styles movies like TMNT, puss in boots and MvM have aren’t so easy to do. The “boss baby” style was bad because it was generic and easy to lazily release every year for money. Contrary to popular belief, these movies didn’t just “copy spiderverse” it’s got its own distinct style. Y’all are so annoying tbh, one minute it’s “wow spiderverse is gonna create a new era of good animation” the next it’s “smh the animation is just copycat spiderverse 😤”

People don't realise that by those defends they are only putting down other animated movies by classifying them as a kids distractions. The Lego movie and Barbie are also based on brand names for example, but they still manage to tell interesting stories while using their brand recognition and turning it on it's head, which makes Mario only sting more. It's hard to argue that this movie's writing wasn't aallll about the "memberberries" but I was okay with it. It was just a fun experience that I had with my nine year old and myself which again makes me very biased. Sometimes It's okay to go to the theater and watch a "good" movie with someone you love. well, to be fair; i think this movie pulls it off even then. yes, they're supposed to stay hidden away, but as young inexperienced and curious teens; it makes sense for them to want to experience that. realistically, teenagers generally prefer rebelling and trying new things over following rules. the movie itself knows they should be staying safe, Splinter keeps insisting on it, and this movie sets it up well enough where the turtles most likely realise the risks of leaving the sewers. I for one look forward to seeing how the turtles will act around humans, but of course, I can't deny the fact that them going to public school definitely isn't the best choice for *ninjas* with enemies.

I perfer it as "stylish over substance". The stylish is animation and art more effective than everything to make film amazing or greater, including the story. Which is problem for film being pretty than having a purpose or heart to the feature. I imagine there will a lot of films using Spiderverse-like style to forgive the bad writing. Or suffering with that problem. This happens with Pixar, with more realistic and technical animation into films like Ice Age 5 as a example.

  • @Solar_Axis
    @Solar_Axis9 ай бұрын

There is definitely a plot. A very simple one, yes, but still a plot. It probably feels so nonexistent because it's so simple, especially when compared to movies with absurdly complicated plots like the one in the Spiderverse series, or Transformers, or most other series. TMNT has also complicated its origin stories over the years to an absurd level (I'm looking at you, IDW.) so simplifying so much feels better to me. You also forgot that Splinter said "We're going to clean up your mess, (I.E. stopping Superfly and his machine.) THEN we're going home!" And we DO see Superfly at the end of the movie, he's the little bug beating against the glass BESIDE THE UTROM LADY. We did see all of these things still. After credits scenes aren't a bad thing. And having a story like TMNT, which has been suffering from numerous LEGITIMATE poorly written plots, (*Cough* Michael Bay *cough*) be rewritten is honestly a GODSEND. ROTTMNT was canceled and they won't renew it despite its continued popularity. We've needed another good rerun. I also don't see the problem with the boys having an actual social life and all the mutants moving in with them. How is giving them a bigger honorary family writing themselves into a corner?? How is it even possible to DO something as big as fighting Mega-Mutant Superfly and NOT be discovered? They were all over Time's Square! No one's gonna forget that! And the reason you didn't encounter a lot of people in theatres is probably because there are so goddamn many streaming services! It was the same thing when I went to watch the Barbie movie and Jurrasic Park when they came out: No one was there because it's already on Paramount! Or Peacock. Why would they go to the theatre and pay a ridiculous amount of money when they already have a streaming subscription at home with all their food? C'mon man!

An example of excellent writing and amazing thematic visuals would be weirdly enough, Don Hertzfeldt. His animation style is simple, almost stickmen. but he's able to pull of that visual style because of what it represents thematically. Don Hertzfeldt Films have amazing visuals for the films he makes. It matters what the movie looks like as much as it matters with the writing. A movie with bad animation but good writing can still be awful.

I feel like these are the same people that are too proud of Nickelodeon not just because of Dan Schneider and the over-saturation of SpongeBob (“Am I going to defile Stephen Hillenburg’s grave for money?! Of course I am!” - Mr. Krabs), but also ownership of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (I mean, then again, the Mutant Mayhem fandom/Tales of the TMNT anticipators are the same people who sleep on Rise yet think we’re sexist if we don’t like the mid-2010s Michael Bay-produced movies with Megan Fox as April O’Neill whom there, they decided to portray her like a lot of Mary Sues in recent Disney movies. I mean, if you like AniMat anywhere near as much as I did when I used to watch him more often, I can see why, but nobody’s perfect. And this is coming from someone who saw Paige Hebert’s videos, for example), and yet the top comments are made to make DazzReviews look like unlike AniMat (I feel like even when he gave both movies 7-star ratings, AniMat was just so critical towards the Mario movie because it wasn’t Disney nor did it have the deep storytelling that would personally appeal to critics like him, yet when he pointed out mixed writing in the characters, he said that he could understand and justify why Mutant Mayhem can be cringy because of the common “real teenagers as real teenagers” defense people make to justify companies that make teen sitcoms, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and is just looking for something by 2020s Nickelodeon to hate, but he was right, and even Awesomemay would point it out.

Dazz, this is easily one of your worst reviews because of the fact you skipped so much details, everyone else already pointed it out but most of your gripes are addressed upfront in the movie, like splinter saying that as soon as they stop superfly they are never going out of the sewer again, or the fact that Superfly mutates because he fell alongside all of the Ooze into the ocean and then he went to a zoo, even the scenes with Cynthia Utrom who is the minor antagonist of the movie has all of her scenes porperly set up, they don't come out of nowhere. I agree that the other mutants turning against superfly in such a short time is the worst aspect of the movie because it feels rushed, they genuinely could have made something more interesting with superfly being a dark reflection of splinter by having him meet the turtles early on in the movie and manipulating/misguiding them, but otherwise Superfly is a good villain in the context of the movie, it still shows a personal connection with the turtles by seeking acceptance too but trying to get it in a rather violent way, besides it almost looks like you didn't pay attention to his plan because it wasn't similar to the lizard's.

I agree I didn't really care for this movie. The plot was the main problem. Also including as many characters as possible, probably for high profile actors and toys.

The reasons the movie was bad is major negative feed back about splinter April's horrible character change and let's be honest Seth rogan can't do anything positive like his writing is so childish no way it could keep with puss in boots or spider verse plus bro all the people who watched this just finished reading the last rounin series like it's hard to compare to that

As a TMNT fan, I wasn’t particularly excited when this movie was announced. I'll say this from jump, but I didn’t watch the movie, and my interpretation of it I got through cultural osmosis and echo chambers. From what I've seen, this was a HUGE departure from the standard TMNT fair. Especially with how far they aged them back. More closely resembling pre teens than teenagers. When the Spiderverse like animation was announced, the celebrity cast was dropped, and more and more trailers with comedic emphasis came out, I knew it wasn’t for me. It seemed like they were marketing to the least common denominator to get the most amount of the general audience without actually representing the source material (loose as the 'source material' may be due to TMNT marketing in the 80s) or having something to say. Let it be known that I'm not afraid of change. Rise of the TMNT is my second favorite TMNT show despite it being the most out there. But that was done to push boundaries, not conform to normality. It wasn't trying to be commercial, it was artistic with a clear, unique, boundary pushing vision. This, while it may be fun and pretty, felt vapid to me. And from everything I've been hearing, that checks out

I think the reason they seem a lot younger is really because of how teens are

@@The_og_moonwalker I'm also a teen. Their voices are way higher pitched than mine or my friends. Grade level above or below. Granted, I just turned 17, but I've always heard the TMNT being on the 15-17 age. Less so 13-14

Glad I'm not the only one who had these concerns. From the get go it seemed very much like they were trying to make it more broadly appealing to audiences rather than sticking to what makes TMNT so great in the first place, and what fans of TMNT really enjoy

This was definitely not one of your more polished reviews when you’re showing that you didn’t pay that very much attention to the movie.

Love your videos man but yeesh, feels like you watched this movie with a blindfold on sometimes. Do overall think that having brilliant animation ontop of a bad story is just having a big ol' turd in 4k but yeah-this is a rare miss from you, unfortunately, in my opinion.

Mutant Mayhem is honestly TMNT at its best. This is supposed to show the TMNT before they became heroes. Just chilling, being bros, getting in trouble and then becoming the Heroes in the Half Shell we know they'll become

You know I feel overall it’s a pretty simple plot (which again, that’s a good thing especially since they wanna expand this universe of the turtles and the fact that they *are* teenagers or acting like how kids would in this generation but give it time and we might get these turtles to become serious and actually develop some of their traits from their other multiversal counterparts like Donnie acting more smarter down the road, Ralph and his anger issues could lead to a good dynamic between Leo and him like there fight scene in the 2007 turtle) just a simple premise of the brothers wanting acceptance, splinter learning the humans he knew and saw aren’t as bad once they see the big picture of things, and. I guess the whole prom thing with April which was really cute -which I guess gives them time to make these simple plots now, like and exmaple the mcu Spider-Man films specifically Homecoming where as when they feel more comfortable off adding serious and dark stories to this, people can actually feel and know the characters 🤔

Honesty, this might be my least favorite version of splinter. And probably the weakest version, too, but I did appreciate the jackie chan style fight scene.
