Does Eugenia Cooney Need Help?

Ойын-сауық

Eugenia Cooney, who is considered an "OG KZreadr," has been dealing with eating disorders for years. The last time she spoke out about it was in 2019, but she's reentering the cultural news cycle looking even worse. She's saying that she doesn't need help, but her fans disagree.

There’s a really simple solution to all of this: STOP WATCHING. Seriously. Once she no longer has her audience feeding her mental illness, she’ll likely have to confront it. But when 100 million people watch her videos and millions of people like them, it’s positive reinforcement for negative behavior. Or you can keep “feeling concerned” while watching her until she dies.

Same people are going to cry and hashtag #ripeueginacoony when she inevitably dies instead of doing the right thing and unsubscribing and unfollowing her before its too late. Sad world

As someone who was hospitalized for an eating disorder over 10 years ago, I will say this: You never "had" an eating disorder, it will always be with you, just like you were never "once" an alcoholic. To say that you recovered, there's no such thing. If you are lucky, you get the help and you are given mechanisms to cope, if you are not, you live in a delusion until your body shuts down and dies. It will always sit in the back of your mind, taunting (I'm jealous of how she looks), it's easy to relapse and fall into old habits, especially when stress and anxiety are high. Thankfully, I was a minor at that time and my parents didn't let me get as bad as her as far as I'm aware (I'm 5'9" and got down to about 90 pounds). You also know you have it, and when people tell you to get help, you're sickly proud. The thoughts are warped: "Yes, look how thin and together I am" is the primary thought. You become scared to gain weight and the lack of calories causes psychological issues to the point where you physically cannot eat because it causes you so much mental pain.

hey i understand where you're coming from, I've had an ED for 6 years now. but i think this idea of "there's no such thing as recovery" is so incredibly harmful. if someone told that to me when i was at my worst, I'd probably just think that I'd never get better, so why should i even bother to attempt this non existent "recovery"? like yes its true that the thoughts remain at the back of your mind but perpetuating the idea that you'll never get better no matter what you do will only cause people to stop seeking treatment, similar to the case of eugenia. it's possible that *YOU* aren't fully recovered yet, which is evident by the fact that you're bragging about your lowest weight despite knowing it will definitely trigger people, but that doesn't mean you get to assume that recovery is impossible for everyone.

I was 19 when I had an eating disorder. I remember my friends and family expressing their worries, and how it strangely just validated my ED even more. That’s what makes them so hard to treat. You can say: “I’m worried about you,” and the patient will think: “Ah yes, that means I’m *almost* thin enough…” But conversely if they DO start getting help and you say: “I’m glad you’re looking healthier,” then the patient will think: “Oh no, I must be getting fat.” Which will send them spiraling again. This was exactly how it was for me. I’m 38-years-old now, and my ED is in remission. Fun fact for a lot of people, they never go away entirely. Every now and then I catch myself in those old patterns: “What if I just skip a few meals before my next doctor’s appointment so the number on the scale will be a little less?” Or “maybe I’ll take too much of this laxative,” because I want to feel “empty.” Or I’ll fixate on my weight, by checking the scale multiple times a day. Sometimes when I look in the mirror I still see a version of me that I know isn’t real -I will actually hallucinate that I am this big, blob of a person whose body fat is spilling out of my clothes, when realistically I’m a moderately-sized, 5’3” middle-aged woman who goes to the gym and wears a size 10-12. I’ve been through multiple diets over the years, and they usually result in ED-like fixation on my part. Anxieties about going out to eat, constantly checking to see if my belly looks “pouched.” I have had to hide my weight scale in an inconvenient spot to get to in my house to keep me from standing on it every couple of hours of the day. I feel bad for Eugenia, too. I, like most people, hope she gets the help she needs. And I also know from personal experience what a hard road it is to healing.

I believe it is because people have been looking out for her and it's been intermittent. We don't know when she fell off the recovery wagon between 2019 and 2023. In 2019 while she was too thin she was at a healthier weight. If you sudden crash fast you die in a month or two, but if you slowly cut back more and more, your body basically has the ability to ration itself. It starts eating itself, you give it some food and it rations that as little as possible to make it last, and then you starve until it starts eating itself again and repeat. Having someone look out for you is vital, because there will be times you don't have the energy to do anything at all, and people will need to hand-feed you to maintain that delicate balance. Ultimately, there's nothing the human body is better at than finding a way to survive. If you give it even the tiniest inch, it will drag it the bloody mile. The tragedy, of course, is that this kind of bodily function is designed to be temporary, and physically cannot be permanent. It doesn't matter how thin you spread the butter. Eventually there will be no more butter to spread.

She doesn't have any real life connections that can speak into her situation. That probably started happening when her friends lovingly intervened and she felt betrayed. Not even her mom is intervening and helping Eugenia's condition, which personally I do think her mental state of "I'm a 15 year old goth gal" in a 29 year old body is concerning on top of her ED and other issues. Unfortunately, I think she's okay with this path that she is on and no one can really stop her if she wants to live her life that way. She knew that she wasn't doing well, so she tried to get better. She would talk about how much food she would be eating and the exercises she would do. There were some hard days where she would complain about how often her parents would tell her to eat (not in an unhealthy way or anything, just a normal breakfast, lunch, and dinner). A year later I’m happy to say that she's almost at 100 lbs and is aiming to hit 110. I know how bad it makes you feel mentally and physically. She needs help and I need help. Unfortunately with starvation, your appetite completely goes away. She probably would need a feeding tube and will need to go very slow with the feeding to avoid refeeding syndrome. Mentally I feel super apathetic which is also a symptom. My heart is probably already affected. Wish docs would intervene faster for people going through malnutrition/ starvation no matter the cause. I can attest that she probably just can’t think straight anymore due to it all therefore can’t get the help she needs. . It’s really a horrendous process. I hope she gets help. Someone needs to step in. And I hope I get help. The hardest battle I’ve been through is trying to keep going. It’s truly exhausting. I had anorexia in middle school. It’s much more rare in boys and also rare to be that early. But I was picked on for being “chubby”(I wasn’t actually chubby). But you’d be surprised what people can make you believe when they try so hard to make you feel bad about yourself. I decided I wanted to make a change so I started eating less food which caused a downward spiral to the point where I was skipping out on numerous meals a day, and sometimes, I just wouldn’t eat. I lost tons of weight, looked horrible, and was very unhealthy during a time in my life when nutrition was imperative, puberty. Looking back, it’s hard to remember how I felt mentally because it was mostly an exhausted fog, but I do remember a few things. I remember eating anything made me feel guilty. I remember being SO skinny but failing to see it, always just believing that I was overweight or too fat. I remember there were mood swings, heavy ones. During the day I was on an obsessive mission to become skinnier, while at night I knew what I was doing was wrong and was afraid I would die in my sleep of malnutrition, also sleep was wildly uncomfortable and unsatisfying. One day, and I remember it very clearly, it was Good Friday(A Christian feast day during which one fasts), my dad asked if I would like a light dinner to break my fast. I declined, which wasn’t out of the ordinary at this point. He knew something was up before this point, but it was here that he decided to confront me about it very bluntly. He literally pulled me towards him and stuck his hand down my shirt. He was seeing how well he could feel my ribs. I think he knew right then what the problem was. He didn’t know how to confront it emotionally or mentally, he just knew something was wrong, so he confronted it with tough love. He sat me down with a big bowl of coco dyno-bites. I said I didn’t want any but he didn’t care, he said I wasn’t allowed to leave the kitchen until they were gone. He did this for a while and comforted me about the issue, saying that everything was ok and was going to be ok, and that his tough love, even some heavy yelling at some points, was with good intention. After a while, eating and the conversations made it feel normal again. I just, slipped away from it, and one day I ran upstairs for dinner and my mom said, “Wow, I’ve never seen you run so fast for food before.” And that was it. They never held it against me, brought it up, or have spoken about it to this day. It was a struggle I got over and they have chosen not to bring it up in case it still weighs heavy on me. As was brought up in “What is a woman?”, my parents helped me see around a deadly corner and took the necessary actions to make sure that I was healthy and wasn’t harming myself. I feel deeply for Eugenia Cooney and am sorry that she doesn’t have rockstars in her life like I do to make sure she stays on the right path. And I feel sorry for any child who is somehow allowed to convince their parents that their wildly unhealthy behaviors, from gender dysphoria to anorexia, is somehow ok and should be encouraged. Hope she feels better❤️

Also I don't think she is already at that point where she is about to die because her hair, teeth and face in general looks ok (compare to other sadly recently passed anorexic youtubers like Amy or Lique Faith, where you can see in their faces that the illness took all it could from them)

I once had a severe eating disorder many years ago. Was very afraid to eat. Everything hurt at a low weight (like, sitting). It is surprising how much Eugenia still can do, physically. So, why did I recover? Not because people were worried about me or tried to help me. I kind of realized my situation but did not take it serious. On one certain day, I had a moment where I felt like I was going to die, it really felt like it or very close to it, horrible, I was terrified. I thought it was too late. I noticed I did not want to die. After that experience, I desperately wanted to get better and survive. And fortunately I made it. Everyone with an eating disorder has his or her own story but for me it was really this near death moment that made me realize: NO! What other people (may it be friends, family members, or strangers) said to me when I was sick did not push me in this direction, it was - from my perspective - solely this one moment. I was pretty lucky, I guess.

I am wearing children's clothes because adults don't fit me. I have finally woke up and am having to eat little bits at a time because any more than that will have me throwing it right back up. At a certain point your body actually rejects food, and you have to re-introduce food to it. I wish they would just shut her channel down. Those that watch and make stupid comments about love, well love means doing hard things too, those people all have a hand in this girls demise.

I understand her predicament, but I can only have so much sympathy. I believe that the reason she doesn't seek help is simply because she doesn't want help. Regardless of whether her mother had a hand in her eating disorder or not, she's had so many chances of leaving her and moving on. She's 29 years old, she isn't a kid anymore. She can do what she wants and she chooses to not eat and show it on the Internet. I think it's amazing that she gets so much love and support from her followers. But at some point we need to understand that some people just don't want to be saved. I stopped watching her videos a long time ago. I know I sound harsh, but for someone who's in total denial, harshness may be the only thing that works.

well, mentally speaking she is far from an adult; her brain and body are suffering from starvation at least since puberty. Her brain probably never developed past 17, thats also why she so convincingly acts like a teenager from around 16/17 years old, because thats what she mentally is. Her mom is feeding into her delussion also. Can't fully blame her for not seeing how unhealthy she is...her mom on the other rhand has no excuse; she is just vile feeding her daughter into this delusion and keeps on watching how her daughter slowly wilts away. I wouldn't even be surprised if her mom has a hefty life insurance on Eugenia

The brain is a powerful tool and denial goes deep. When you're on the inside looking out.... You don't see or understand the abuse happening to you. Everyone on the outside looking in can see the abuse but react or voice their concern wrongly. Causing more confusion for the abused person. If we all educate ourselves in psychological conditions and psychological abuse, I feel we can help each other more in this evil world!

My niece looked the same after going through the eating disorder stuff in high school. It's incredibly hard to convince someone like that they're permanently damaging themselves. It took a lot of hospital stays before she came around. She finally came around but she has to deal daily with the permanent damage done.

My sister is anorexic. I say is because I’m not convinced she’s ever fully kicked it but she is at least got skin and muscle mass. When she met her husband, they decided to try for kids before getting married (she was 28) because she wasn’t even sure if she could (4 years without a period) and he had gotten divorced previously because his wife decided two years in that she never wanted kids. The long term consequences are an issue all their own.

It's heartbreaking to say but as with a person with a drug problem, a eating disorder can become a addiction and no matter how much you want them to stop and get better, no matter what you try to do or say. No matter how much you feel powerless unless the person wants to change, they won't. I wish her all the best.

I imagine if she turns 80 and still looks this way, people will still keep claiming, she's worse than ever, and only a few more months left..

As someone who suffered/suffers from anorexia, she is enjoying the attention, whether if it's positive or negative. I know that she thinks when people tell her she's too thin, she sees it as a challenge to get thinner. It's how I thought, and social media didn't exist when I was in the midst of it. She is dying, and she believes it won't happen to her, that she has complete control. Sadly, there is nothing they can do for her unless she decides to change.
