Does Depression Cause Permanent Brain Damage?

In this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch talks about the concern that many people have that their depression will permanently impair their cognitive function. Douglas uses his own experience and the experience of others to reassure viewers that when they emerge from their episode that they will experience full restoration of their cognitive abilities. in other words, depression does not cause permanent brain damage.

I sure as hell haven't been the same since my depressive breakdown. I'm not depressed anymore, but deffinetly have some anxiety left. I’ve dealt with depression for almost 20 years, addiction for 12, and have had insomnia for about 6-7 years. In my case, I was perfectly healthy until I began taking antidepressants. My doctor prescribed it to me in the hopes that it would help with my insomnia. But I think it damaged my brain. It created an anxiety in me that I had never felt. I had severe panic attacks, and eventually developed an arrythmia. I had to get an ablation to help with the palpitations. I am feeling really weak now. I have lost muscle and feel nerve pain. At one point it became very difficult for me just to walk. It was as if I had lost my coordination. My brain couldn't process all of the senses I was feeling. I feel trapped now. I am taking antidepressants to be able to function. But it seems hopeless. I used to be a very avid reader. But now can't even read more than a couple paragraphs.

Some of the SSRI medications do cause agitation. But healing is still possible. You might consider massage or acupuncture to help relax you. You can also try sitting in a hot tub. Try to eat as well as you can and get good rest. The body and mind are resilient, so that healing can come

Survival Farm Coach: I've heard of Tolle. But I grew skeptical when he was one of the people spouting the prosperity gospel. Basically saying if you envision a sports car, or a cure for your disease, it would happen. Also he got tied in with Oprah in her spirituality phase. Sadhguru basically says you don't need to do anything. Do nothing, just exist. Like a bee or a goldfish knows what to do ever minute. It doesn't spend time thinking how can I be a better bee? We as humans need to know how to get out of the way of our endless stream of thoughts and emotions (or at the very least learn to leisurely float down that stream)

Luis Corrales Hhhhmmmm, I'm thinking about the bee and the goldfish, but at some point it would be a boring life. Isn't expansion the purpose of life? To become a better version of yourself? Only through experience you get to know yourself? But I also like to regenerate and be in my 'whisp spirit' state at times. Some sort of state I felt before being born. I guess for me the solution is a balance between actions and meditation. Maybe what I say doesn't even make any sense. Its bedtime

It is not so much to live like a bee, but to find our true nature, just as every living creature has. We are not the shoes we wear or the car we drive, we are not our bodies or our disease. We are not even our brain (allegedly). Being still does not mean physically still. You can take action, but be still in the mind so you really take in what is happening within you and around you. Otherwise, it's like trying to focus on having a nice family dinner in a room with 6 televisions blaring and everyone staring at their phones. Our brains produce noise. I'm only quoting things I've read. Can't say I've reached any higher level of existence. I don't really care if there is one. It's just an interesting topic to explore.

I feel that I was poising my body with that protein. I was working out months ago and lately I was so tired that I felt exhausted after walking just a few blocks. I have been working out these last days and it has been amazing. I didn't even know that depression could be a symptom of gluten intolerance.

Just so you know, I know you must feel like you’re the sole person on this planet that’s as mentally tormented as yourself, but if it offers any help, I feel the exact same way you described verbatim. Being conscious is utterly excruciating. I pray every night, if I can actually fall asleep, that I will not wake. My father committed suicide due to severe depression, so there’s obviously a major biological component to this insidious fucking illness. Only thing keeping me alive is envisioning the insufferable pain my mother will have to endure again from another suicide of someone she loves. It would honestly be easier if I didn’t have her love and unconditional support. As ungrateful as that sounds, for there are many who suffer with no one to lean on for support. Regardless, I rest my case. I would have pulled the trigger a long time ago if it wasn’t for her. Wish no one cared…

Depression has become apart of my life so learning more about it is very interesting to me, love your work sir and keep it up!!

Only a year?! So if I've had it my entire life that means I'm absolutely 🤕. That makes no sense... I think people mix up being sad with being depressed. Same way people say they have PTSD when in all actuality it is an entirely normal amount of stress for that specific moment in time, separate from any actual traumatic event.

  • @johns966

I really enjoyed this video. One thing I’d say is that it needs to be stressed that depression does cause, albeit reversible, brain damage(change). There are proven changes in the brain’s structure, and untreated depression has been linked to greater inflammation. People should understand that treating depression is just as urgent as treating any other disease.

Excellent point. The structure that affects memory, the hippocampus, does shrink. But when the depression is treated it returns to its original size.

The thing is I don't think I'm cursed with depression as much as I am anxiety. I came here to try an find someone to talk about it with. I'd rather not say what it is causing my anxiety though. As of now, I've had anxiety for about 4 months. Although the thing with me is that I'm naturally gifted with calming my mind in a state of panic, but the attacks get so bad sometimes that afterwards I really see no point in living anymore if mental pain like that exists. What makes me the most upset is that I hadn't any anxiety (at least not in huge loads) for a while. Then I went to a family members house and they mentioned the thing sparking my anxiety. At that point it shot through the roof and I left the room trembling. I started preparing for death and everything, until my mind after a minute or 2 began to cool a little bit, but my heart was still finished. If anyone mentions the thing that sparkes my anxiety I completely lose control and prepare to die. I really need help with this because my life was going so well before. I remember before the anxiety came I used to be so thankful to not have a really bad mental illness, now I feel like my life has just crumbled in a few months.

Thank you for sharing your story. I want to let you know that the body and brain have tremendous resiliency, so I believe you can make it through this. There are coping tools and strategies to respond to extreme anxiety, as well as medication. I will send you a link to chapter 1 of my audiobook, when going through hell don’t stop, about a horrible akathisia I suffeted for nine months. But I eventually recovered. I think it would be helpful for you to find a good counselor or therapist who specializes in working with people who suffer from anxiety. Your nervous system is out of kilter right now, but it can be restored.

Love your videos douglas. I was wandering. It seems like many of your issues with severe depression have been caused by medication? Or at least they contributed quite heavily? Does that not make you very angry? I was misdiagnosed with depression after suffering a concussion, i had some issues with low moods and anxiety but my issues were mainly physical. After being prescribed Lexapro and ativan I became severely depressed. I tapered off the lexapro after a month and now 12 months later I'm suffering severe withdrawals from ativan and the lexapro. I am experiencing a depression I am convinced wouldn't be possible without any medication. It frustrates me greatly because the problems I had before this were nothing compared to this!

I have been suffering from depression for last 5.5 years, I am 25 year old present, 20s are most important year of our job career, I am from india where unemployment is one of the highest, for me it is even hard to get job a basic thing for a survival but I am still fighting this time I am near to crack government exam let see what happens. I worked so hard for my career from adolescent and god gave me this reward for all of my hardwork. a dying man feels extreme pain for few minutes or maximum for few days but a cursed one like us dies everyday. There is a saying "something painful which doesn't kill evolves you" this is the only positive thought which keeps me still working hard with this curse in my head. In starting year of my depression there is a strong thought in my head that "it will never go" but I know in one corner of my brain that this extreme negative thought itself is what depression makes you feel my first step to manage it was "Acceptance" , I accepted this curse and defeated that "it will never go" thought , I am ready to face not for 1-2 years but whole for whole of my life no matter what will be my destiny I will continue fight for my family survival , antidepressant are almost of no use I took them only for starting 2 years they were not heeling me instead they were making me dependable on them and sleepy. Without medicine I am heeling better

Depression causes a shrinkage of the hippocampus area of the brain which is the emotional centre of it. Depression can also harm the Amygdala, which is the area that processes memories, decision-making and emotional responses. If treated, it's not permanent, but if left untreated the damage will stay until then. Now, I don't mean to make anyone feel bad about this, no, depression doesn't cause cognitive issues, much more memory loss and behavioral issues. I've been going through depression for 5+ years, I also have a few other mental disorders like PTSD, for example, and I understand the struggle. But the message of video, as sweet and helpful as it is, isn't entirely true. Please take care everyone! Stay safe

I don't think so, although I know a number of people who have developed depersonalization after smoking marijuana and it does take time for it to go away. You might want to watch some videos about it on the Internet and also talk to your counselor.

I have heard depression can shrink the brain. Plus the more episodes you have had increases your risk of another episode. Plus antidepressants lead to brain neurotransmitter deficiencies over time. So can be a difficult situation.

I've was diagnosed with anxiety disorder. panik disorder. Depression. Social phobia. And agoraphobia. My doctor told me to go to see a physchitrst whom was the one that diagnosed me with this bullshit. I was told on the 3rd meeting that there is no funding for me and to go back to my doctor. I won't or I should say I can't go back to the physchitrst when I was referred back as I know I can't take another rejection on the grounds of funding as I know I will take my life. I don’t think the brain shrinks in size. What happens in depression is that the brain circuits don’t function properly. When the depression is over, the circuits start to function normally again.
