Does Cost Really Matter? Laowa OOOM vs Zeiss LWZ3
Фильм және анимация
As a DP you tend to do a lot of these sort of tests before projects. I hope this encourages you to do the same because sometimes you can find an option to save you a little bit of money.

Do YOU think price plays a big role in quality these days or is the gap getting slimmer and slimmer?

I bought the Ooom 7 month ago. Still holds up good. Personally I think its a little soft at T2,9, but thats just me :) I also shoot a lot with the Zeiss lwz3. Im on a shoot with the Zeiss now as Im writing this :) Like you said in the video, its a more clinical lens, and its a very "safe" zoom lens to use for broadcast television. But for 5000 dollars, the Laowa Ooom is a very nice zoom lens. Keep up the good work! Best regards from Norway :)

Do you notice the zoom ring isn’t even all the way thru? If I do a fast punch in using a zoom motor I get a slow down at 60mm then it speeds back up
Welcome back!! Just started watching last week and I've been binging. Your work means a ton to me! Thanks for your time.

Thanks for watching and for the kind message 👍 glad you're enjoying the content.
Used the Zeiss on a Ritz-Carlton project - it was great. We used it for 99% of the shots (rented a wide CP.3 for one setup inside a vehicle). It can be a lens you use for an entire project.
I own that lens along with a Laow 25-100mm. In some real world tests paired with my Varican LT it is okay, which is not a slam on it. If it is within your budget I would go for a Zeiss etc, as sharpness is very important. In many ways the Laow 25-100mm is a breakthrough lens as a starter lens for commercial and filmmaking that really gets you in the door. They haven't sold that many as you can't buy one second hand in California. Support--they are terrible at replying.
Love your videos and your channel!
I recently sold my rokinon glass (sigh - covid) and today I was just thinking and kinda deciding what would be the next glass to invest in after I recover my covid losses, this video came at the perfect moment!

Ahhhh that was the worst decision I have ever made, selling my rokinons.
Thanks for making this video, but I would've appreciated other things such as degrees on the focus barrel, how do said barrels feel to turn? Is one smoother than the other? Is the OOOM weather sealed like the Zeiss? Would also LOVE to see if you can do a test with the Zeiss and Angenieux EZ series as well.

Thank you for the kind critique. Looking over this video again I think you're totally right and that would have been a great thing to include! Considering the OOOM was brand new and the Zeiss was an older lens used many times as it's a rental item, I found the OOOM to be more smooth than the Zeiss. I'm not too sure it is weather sealed and cant seem to find that info in my notes from the company that lent it out. All signs point to no though considering it isn't even listed in the specs sheet. 🤔
Hi, btw the cat's eye shape has nothing to do with the number of blades, instead it has to do with the amount (0, 1 or 2), design and location of apodization filters within the lens. Filters such as these are designed to correct for that effect.

Oh for real? Over the course of my career I've always been told it's iris blades. Thanks. Let me do some further research 🔎
I don't know if they got a bad copy of the laowa but at 0:53 it looks too blurry or maybe it wasn't in focus, but at that moment it destroys the laowa completely no matter you talk nice things about performance, one is based on what What do you see, I say this because I saw a review of the same lens with a blackmagic pro and at no time does it look like this. Thanks for taking the time to review, however it would have been nice to see how it performs at different "t stops"
I wonder if the oval bokeh is an artificial artifact intended to complement the 1:33 rear anamorphic adaptor for a lookalike front anamorphic ricegrain bokeh? It makes no sense to put a cat's eye iris in a spherical lens.
wondering if you got to test the SLR Magic cine lens that seems to push for the lower cost film makers? (for fuji and maybe other cameras)

Nah haven't tested them unfortunately
Hello any chance you could do a test for me. I own the OOOM and if I attach a focus motor to the zoom gear and do a fast zoom the zoom ring slows down around 60mm then speeds back up at 75mm which means I can’t do a fast even zoom in unless going at a very slow speed.

I was going to ask the same question, A lot of people I've seen shoot with those zooms really love them, and you can't go wrong with the price! but I can always use more informed opinions on those lenses!
Have you seen the full-frame expander for the ooom? Really curious about how that looks as nobody has reviewed/even tested that as far as I know. cheers 🏳️🌈

@@flickcine awesome, that would be super cool to see. The FX6 is my primary cam so I really need the coverage but love this lens...would be great to see as nobody has covered it.
"affordable" it's 26k where I live :,)
The Zeiss has some onion ring bokeh. I kind that a lot more than cats eye.

mmm onion riiiiings
fine comparison... but: please speak slower... otherwise I have to repeat the video, which doubles the time, paradoxically;-(
I would never get a Chinese product again. Why? Simply because of political reasons. As alternative I would go Korean, Japanese, English, whatever but not Chinese.
