I did not know, nor ever think of this. Thank you, I'll consider!
You just made me feel so much better about my sport.
This actually gives me confidents on my sport trd.
Man, I have a 2022 SR5 w/ 4x4. She's getting a lift soon, some new tires and wheels, and some nice skid plates to keep her safe underneath. I kept thinking "I should have just went and got a TRD off road for the lockers" and feeling like I wasted money. You just made me feel so much better about my decision. I liked the idea of getting my Tacoma off-road ready myself, so I bought a lower trim that had a bunch of features added on(from random stuff like blackout badging and TRD shifter to blind spot monitoring). Your first obstacle in 4-hi told me everything I needed to know. If I ever find myself in a position where I I need lockers, maybe I will add them on. Until then though, I'm a very happy man.
Yo man I've been trying to figure out which Tacoma to get (Sport or Off-Road) and I'm so glad I found this video. Thank you!
Such a great info vid for the 4x4 sport with no lock compared to the off-road edition. Nice job man!👍🏽
Change the title to: "Tacoma TRD Sport VS Off-Road. No locker Needed?" Watch the video explode in views! It was kind oh hard finding this exact content which I've been searching for days. Best video on the subject, for sure! TY!

Newly subscribed! You guys seem pretty cool. Thanks for making this and putting it out there.
I went with the OR trim. I might not need a locker, MTS or crawl control all the time but I'll be glad to have them when the time comes that I do.
Truck looks super clean man 🔥 Definitely surprised a sport can do that much on the trail.

Seriously how often do people need to use a locker? I live in the rocky mountains and hunt elk in some nasty areas and I have never needed a locker. Moab sure, but not in Montana
I’ll have to agree with you on the locker. I have the off-road model 2018. But I had a stroke in 2020 , lm starting to get my oats back. We’re see this fall. I bet it won’t matter , locker or not. I see ya on the trial.
We just bought our 2023 trd 4x4 sport, and I love it
I bought a 2018 Sport, but I also considered the Off Road. I wanted a hybrid of both, actually. LOL. I don't off road though, and just decided to go with the Sport because I just liked the look better. I lifted if and put 33' KO2s on it with Gear rims, and I'm very happy with it. Love the trucks from Toyota.
Just got my first truck and it happens to be the sport 24 version. Thank you for making me feel better about my choice 🤣🤣🤣
I got the trd sport just because they had it in electric lime long bed and I really wanted a long bed and don’t plan many crazy trails besides views and camping so I am very glad to see this will definitely look into aftermarket lockers tho just so the wife doesn’t freak out and think we ain’t making it some where lol
I have an 18 sport 4wd with all the bells and whistles, front bumper with a winch, cbi skids, Cali raised sliders, BAMF bed rack, ikamper rtt, warfab rear bumper with swingout, prinsu rack, fox 2.5 with dsc all around, deaver expo 3 leaf pack. I’m roughly 1100 pounds over stock and have 5.29 on 33’s and if you do stuff like in this video you definitely don’t even need to use a locker. I did cleghorn (local trail in Cali) 100% stock and had to avoid a 2 off shoots due to my limited clearance. The LSD works great on the tacoma. But if you’re going to really push it and do some hard wheeling (way harder than the stuff in this video) a rear locker is all you need.
Nice job! Good looking truck👍
First off I just put down a deposit on a TRD Sport a couple of weeks ago. I'm likely many months out before I get word on allocation. So I have been watching WAY too many videos on the Sport vs. Off Road debate. I have been tormenting myself on whether I should get an OR instead because of the locker and crawl controls. I don't expect to off road very often but didn't want to one day regret not having those OR tools. I am going to be upgrading my tires right away though. A lot of people have said that with the right tires and some skill, you can get away with not having the locker for all but the most challenging trails. Honestly this video is way more informative then any of the discussions about what you should and shouldn't have. This is kind of all that I need to see to know that for now the capability of a Sport with good tires is all I need. I know that I can always add a locker down the road. Thanks for posting this. It's super helpful.

Nice read. I was in the same dilemma. Sport is capable enough, plus long bed is practical and looks better. Along with tires and wheels, you may also want to consider lift and suspensions.

I own both. The sport has A track, if you watch the video again as soon as the computer was doing the thinking he would let off the gas, you gotta hold the gas or give it more and it's fine. Also, he has ,35s which will prevent Atrack to do it's job properly. I've literally have had my sport balancing on 2 wheels all the time. But yes, if you're gonna off road a lot then get the off road, it's just better
I’d get a sport for the hood lol and you can always get it lifted to look better and get a locker. That’s all it takes to make any Tacoma look better 🔥

The price difference for me was $36k OTD (toyotathon) for 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 short bed double cab auto in MGM, vs $41k for off road and they only had Red on the lot. Since purchasing my truck it's now on Bilstein 6112's/5160's with AAL, RR7-h wrapped with wildpeak 265/70 17, full steel skids, engine tuned, and all in it still cost me less than the OR. Much less. Next on the menu is gears and will be adding either arb air locker or Detroit trutrack for the rear. Then I'll be at about the cost of the OR, however much more capable and comfortable. The suspension and tune completely changed the truck.
On a stock 265 70 R17 stock SB 2012 TRD v-6 MT I went out on Fort Hood tank trails and did fine. Your going to learn how to get around having a locker with line choice and using 4low to even the drive line out.
generally you don't really "need" 4wd low, just reduces strain on transmission and engine.
nice truck
I literally bought a base model 15 and upgraded it to what I wanted. Harrop E locker is better than factory.
Auto lsd might help more? Turn traction control off
I live in Hawaii and I own a 2015 sport and I’ve never gotten stuck on the beach.
The off road has better suspension, rear lockers, trail select and craw control The sport has rough suspension painted bumpers and fenders and a hood scoop I had a sport and traded to an off road and adding the hood scoop I like the look If you want to off road get the off road model you’ll be hating life if you get the sport and you realize how much is missing , I got the sport and loved it for 3 years but got stuck a lot
Didn't even use the Limited Slip Dif (LSD) feature. I've got at 19 TRD Sport and although a locker would be nice, I think it's a bit overkill and not really necessary for a vast majority of us mere mortals.

Just a tid bit. When you're off roading up something steep it's better to go into LO range. It's easier on the engine and gears and keeps the tires better planted. You can stay in sport mode to keep your revs up and from the gears dropping too. Nice video.

Not supposed to stay inclined while truck is running for too long, the oil doesn't circulate properly and low oil pressure is VERY bad for these engines. An oil catch can cost $30 and will solve the problem if you are inclining daily.
As soon as the computer was doing it's job to figuring out how much brake force to apply to the spinning wheel he let off the gas 😂

35x12.50-18 tires on fuel rims on a 6in lift 👍🏻
Gotta turn off TC for the Auto LSD to activate.
Maybe deflate the Wheels a bit for more traction ???
MTS works well also which doesn't come on the sport
A TRD sport with an aftermarket locker such as ARB or Eaton E-locker is far superior to the TRD off road and TRD pro simply due to the fact that you don't have those stupid nanny controls limiting you on when you can use the locker. I installed one in my 2nd gen sport and it works in 2wd, 4hi and 4lo where the stock trd offroad and pro only allow the locker to engage in 4lo and i have read on many forums that people have issues getting the locker to engage on inclines and usually only works on level ground. Save some money by getting the SR5 or sport 4x4 and getting an aftermarket locker and making it far better than the overpriced OR and PRO models.
@user-ej1bq4bq2w
Жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I bought the 21' Sport in Dec 2020 for 35k. Since then I have installed bilstein 6112's & 5160's, RR7-H wrapped in wildpeak 265/70 17's, and full skids. S&B cai, and tuned with kdmaxxx 87 octane. Air locker is on the menu but I honestly have never missed it so it probably won't happen anytime soon. MTS or A-TRAC would be nice, but the standard TRAC on even the base model SR is a super stout system and rarely needs much help. These trucks will take most people further than their confidence alone, and all that extra tech is just overkill

@chanoleyva8584

@sonysoyboysaremadeoftears.7404 actually atrac is more then an auto lsd in the front. It's a locker that breaks to provide better traction. And is in fact better than a front locker cause it won't break as easily
The sport Tacoma is not really meant to be heavily off roaded , the hard ware on the OR Tacoma is way better , the rear diff is 8.75 inch vs the sports smaller 8 inch , the spindles , and hubs , axle are also bigger in the OR, the transfer case is the same as hilux in the OR . The sport is good but the OR is much more suitable for this kind of off roading your doing , and by the way when you go up hills like that make sure your always in 4LO otherwise you will start breaking stuff on your truck , 4hi is for snow and sand on slight inclines not steep hills like your tackling . Good stuff …

9:21, if it smokes, shut it off. These cheesy 2GR-FKS motors suffer oil starvation at angles and I promise you WILL destroy your motor. It has happened countless times. It does not have any baffling in the oil pan and its not a dry sump engine. Horrible from Toyota
I don’t think u both know what 4LO and 4HI are for
there is a reason why the TRD OFFROAD is 5k more in price.
if ur truck start jumping stop it ! u gonna break something
4Low doesn’t give you better traction in case you are confused. It’s there to save your transmission and clutch from wearing out. Don’t use 4High for hills like that😳😳 Unless you have money for a new tranny
@williamwilson860

Using 4Lo helps with RPM management, which helps a lot to keep your tires from breaking traction.
Have 17 Trd off-road with locker not a 4X4 it's all I need no need for a 4X4 I can do same as any 4X4 out there, many people think has to be 4X4 to go places get out of ruts climbing hills etc, it really comes down to the person behind the wheel knowing how to handle the terrain.

Naw man, there is no substitute for 4x4 when you get into more inclined trails that are off camber. That locker will just slide your ass out off the trail in places where 4x4 would allow you to crawl up and over. I def agree that the driver mod makes the most difference tho
