Does a Strong Immune System Make Colds Worse?

Not everyone who is infected by a cold virus actually shows symptoms. In fact, people who seem to experience symptoms like a sore throat and stuffy nose more often may actually have more robust immune systems!

    From an evolutionary perspective, the influenza virus is truly amazing. It's genome consists of 8 different segments (comparable to chromosomes) which can be reassorted independently. This means that two influenza viruses can shuffle around their chromosomes when they both end up in the same cells. Influenza also has an enormously high error rate. As a result, an immune system is not able to recognise influenza within 5 years of the last infection (Amazing right? I plan to do a video on that myself soon!). Since I'm a biologist, feel free to ask me anything about that topic!

    This isn’t necessarily true - reactivity and “strength” are different - an immune system can be highly reactive and weak at the same time (for example, autoimmunity), or it can be minimally reactive and weak (leukopenias, AIDS) and same goes for when the immune system is “strong” aka is fighting off pathogens well (i think that’s what you meant by strong?) source: i both have an autoimmune disease and study auto inflammatory conditions as a grad student. Would love to chat more about this!

    Quite possibly, it's known that frequent exposure to an allergen can cause decreased sensitivity to it, the immune system basically goes 'Well I guess this is normal now'. The effect is strong enough that people with life threatening nut allergy can slowly train their body to consume nuts over a period of months.

    It's not given up, it's developed one or two REALLY good antibodies that help it identify and neutralize new versions of the infection before it has to sound the alarm. My body has a similar antibody to the flu... I'm basically 'immune' to the flu, and I never have to get the vaccine. Lucky for me too... last time I got a flu shot I nearly died from a cytokine storm.

    I hardly ever get sick. Everyone at my job gets sick and passes it around, but I never get it. The way I know I'm coming down with something, is when I have trouble sleeping for a couple of days, along with a headache, without any apparent reason. After that, I'm sick for anywhere from two to five days. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it kicks my butt. My co-workers get annoyed because I never seem to get what they have, but I have multiple health issues because of my age and bad genetics that more than make up for it.

The secondary medication is a steroid that forces my respiratory system to just chill out a bit, since what makes my allergies so bad is not the dangerousness of the allergens (we're talking pollen, dust, cat hair, etc.), but the insane intensity of my body's attempts to get rid of them!

    What about not simply having mild/severe symptoms, but having none at all? Is there a population at the extremes, i.e. those individuals with a very strong or very weak immune response that (assuming there's an infection, but no neutralizing antibodies from memory cells) either kills the invading pathogens before they have a chance to replicate, or kills them slow enough as to limit disease progression, but keep immunopathology at a minimum? I've passed the entire year of 2019 without feeling sick once, and I'm wondering into which of those two camps I fall.

  • @garethdean6382

    @garethdean6382

    4 жыл бұрын

    Both are possibilities. Many diseases wish to minimize immune response so you can help spread them. (The weak point in diseases like ebola is that thy kill so quickly thy find it hard to spread.) And actual infection with an illness does require some 'luck'; innate immune components such as the compliment system work to attack and destroy anything foreign in general and can wipe out most infections before they even get started. A 'weak' immune response to some pathogens can be problematic. Some diseases such as human papillomavirus can end up constantly infecting an individual that can't quite eliminate the bug, resulting in cancers. Simple warts can cover a person from head to toe in treelike growths and so on. In general you really DO want your system to respond to threats.

  • @fricki1997

    @fricki1997

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@garethdean6382 Certainly. After all many novel pathogens that are very virulent at first adapt over time, to become less deadly, and thus spread more. On the point of innate immunity, I once witnessed an experiment where bacteria were exposed to blood plasma, so only complement and antimicrobial molecules, and even this was enough to kill 99% of all bacteria, I was really surprised by that. Otherwise, I've also been very surprised to see how many of the adverse effects of different infections can be assigned to an overactive immune reactions. I always wonder if giving immunosuppressants might be a viable therapy, simply to limit tissue damage and other unpleasantries, of course there's always a risk of side effects, but still.

    Last time i was really sick was 2013 I was out for about 3 days. Even with that I dont think it was nearly as bad as what most people get 3-4 times a year. But I also have always taken really good care of myself. I workout 4-5 times a week, eat healthy consistently and have very little unnecessary psychological stress.

I could se my bone thats how bad it was. Doctors told me i had to get stitches but i sayed no and left. I never realy took care of my foot i was running around geting dirt and oil and stuff in it. I never cleaned it or take any anti biotics and it never got infected. Does the imunesystem allso help with infections?

    So, basically I don't have an immune system. I'm 42 and in the last 10 years, I only once had a minor cold and 2 times I had a sore throat. The last time I was really sick, I had my typical child diseases (pre-teen). 8-9 years ago I had some flu symptoms (fever, muscle pain), but only for one day. So I'm one of those guys that never has a sick day when many of my colleagues do get the cold. I probably die the day I really get sick....

    I get 2 or 3 colds a year. The full symptoms last a month! Starts with a runny nose and sore throat for a couple days. Then sinus congestion and cough. The cough can last for weeks and weeks. I still have rib pain from the one in November which was already two months ago. I've had another cold since then. I honestly cannot take this anymore. I miss too much work and miss out on things I want to do. I was sick over Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2019. Every single plan and trip had to be cancelled. I have tried different medicines and remedies. Nothing makes it better.

Last time I was sick was march 2020, I got sick now at 2022 february, had to take 1 week sick leave and stay in bed and coughed for another week. Had fever, wet cough, stuffy nose, hard to sleep at night due to hot pillow, wanted a cooling pillow so much. Had 37.2=37.9° C fever.

    this is definitely interesting, I'd always thought I had such a good immune system since I rarely get sick but recently came down with a cold that made me feel like I was dying, muscle pains, painful cough, etc I was worried that my immune system was starting to become weaker but turns out my bodies overreaction is a sign of a robust immune system, I guess I was lucky to evade getting sick for so long, hadn't really been since childhood but boy did that cold kick my butt (or my bodies reaction to it rather lol)

    This makes SO much sense to me!! I have multiple autoimmune diagnosis and I rarely get any ‘regular’ infections, like colds or even the flu... in periods of my life where I got immunosuppressant medication I were more likely to get colds... To me it seems like my immune system has enough to battle with ( with colitis, crohns, sacroiliitis and psoriasis on the daily) so why bother with the ‘small stuff’ ;)

I get my immunization shots every year. and and I haven’t been sick in years. brush my teeth twice daily, what am I doing wrong? I also get exposed to lots of dirt during harvest season and I usually get a stuffy nose but that’s more the allergens I suppose.

    The problem I have is that my body reacts to things that aren't harmful--perfume, cut grass, smells in general. It is nuts. I used to hate body odor, now I prefer it over any kind of scented deodorant. (I do use deodorant.) Fortunately, I am now on a medication that has a side effect dampening the sense of taste and smell. I miss the taste but not the smell.

    Another thing to consider, a person might be a carrier to a particular strain, but otherwise immune to that strain. This is why it's important to take the same precautions, such as proper hand washing, covering a cough or sneeze, and using sanitizer as necessary. You may feel fine, but you're still spreading germs.
