Stephan - thanks for making the video. I've been purchasing bear spray for years and wanted to know if my old canisters would work in a pinch. I may use an old one as a back-up someday. Very helpful information.

Here’s a tip I got from a hunter. Place the canister in a bucket of water to see whether it sinks or floats. I was told you can tell that way whether the gas has escaped over the years. Never verified it myself though.

My impression is that wouldn’t work. I don’t think any bear spray canister I have weighs more than it would if it were full of water. However I will check it with my current canisters, thank you

Why would you ever believe that an aluminum canister losing propellent would do anything but float? What a useless tip.

The Counter Assault in the white cannister seems to spray out a much bigger cloud that stays thick for even farther than the Frontiersman in the orange cannister.

I appreciate the video. Informative. I’m about the get a bottle very soon to go hiking with my kids..

If you in bear country may I add some metal with some hard cast shells and a big ol' bowie knife? Spray is effective by all the videos I've seen but subject to wind and the bear itself. If it doesn't work, your screwed!

Bear spray, condoms, and sun block, if it is expired it is time to replace. The little spray looks like it is Sabre Dog Spray.

I tested it myself with one from a bear spray from 2014 there was no wind lucky I didn’t get it towards me so I was fine

My dog chewed up one of those tiny ones and licked up the spray 😆

It doesn’t sound like you watched the video, because if you did you would know that there are multiple reputable studies showing that bear spray works better against a charging bear than a firearm. I carry both, but I would definitely use my bear spray first
