Did you have both chains off when aligning the arrow on sprocket and the dimple on lower cam area ? Can you share an image if the instructions you used?

If I move the crankshaft to align the timing arrows does it do the same for bank 1 at the same time and do I have to release tension on the cam phasers ?

Did the vehicle start normal after finishing cause I'm tried timing mines twice doing the same exact way. But I'm getting vvt codes suggesting timing is off

Yes it runs very good. I have put around 5k miles on it since doing the repair.

Hi, I have a jeep grand Cherokee with the same 3.6 engine. Out of nowhere it started to drive really bad. The mechanic is saying that it is very rare, but it looks like the engine jump timing. is that common? what could cause that? It has only 65K miles and I do the oil change every 4 months.

I would say that it is probably rare for them to just jump time. Especially with such low mileage.

Possibly bad phaser or phasers os a tone wheel shifted on a cam.

@@rustysgarage yeah, that is the problem I'm having. I have taken to three mechanics and they all tell me the same thing; " it looks like it is out of timing but the only way to find out it's to open. it is a big job and expensive, and what if it does not fix the problem" this is the codes that it gives.

How or where do I turn the crankshaft

Turn the crank by putting the bolt back in it and using a socket and ratchet.

How did you remove the crankshaft pulley?

You gotta stick a rod into the bolt hole, and use a wheel puller to push on that rod, instead of the front of the shaft. The shaft only has a bolt hole, instead of the shaft hole going all the way through like a old small block chevy

I always put it on top dead center #1 and dont touch it until i put heads back on. Any cam removal can be done without removing front timing cover. I will say you will break your neck trying to double check those arrows on that intermediate shaft gear.

Absolutely true. It was one of the most aggravating experiences I’ve ever had. Still running very good though.

Facts. These engines are a nightmare. But I have learned as long as the cam holes are pointing up and the crank is turned to top dead center it doesn’t matter where the colored links and arrow are. I obviously always line it up correctly but I have gotten repairs in people have done themselves and those links and arrows are anywhere but correct My wife is a Jeep person and I’m a machanic and have been my whole life. And I hate absolutely everything about these 3.6”s. They can be good engines. Sometimes. Water pumps suck. Thermostats suck oil pump sucks. Oil cooler is awful. Every sensors in an awful spot. O2 sensors go like crazy. The heads are junk. The rockers and lifters are junk. The cam phasers fail way too often. Even for phasers. If you have a 3.6 with 200k and all you have done is regular maintenance and never had a check engine light. You have a unicorn lol

Do you roll it over by hand? After timing mine, when I roll it over, the chain is jumping. All new chains, guides, and tensioners.

I used a ratchet. I don’t know why it would be jumping if the tensioners are good.
