Documentary: The Rise Of Regional Jets

Documentary: Have you ever had to fly to or from a small, rural, or remote community? A regional jet is likely what you traveled on.
The regional jet market has seen plenty of change in recent years. Both Airbus and Boeing have paid more attention to it, but it remains dominated by other manufacturers. This documentary looks at both turboprops and regional jets and the choices airlines currently have for each of them.
Both of these markets are dominated by a couple of leading manufacturers. But with fewer entry barriers than large jet manufacturing, there are several smaller and newer competitors.

As a Brazilian I’m very happy to see Embraer, one of our national prides, leading the way on regional jet market for some time now! Usually people don’t know about the excellence Embraer has to offer, it isn’t coincidence that almost every time Embraer launches a aircraft, it gets 1st place many times over!

I love the seats of the E-Jets. They are so comfy to sit it. The downside is a snowy A/C. E-Jets tend to let some ice crystals fall out of their vent slots. At least the ones I flew with. CRJs are a little less comfy to sit it but still ahead from A320s and B737s. The A220 is a very modern approach. Quieter in comparison to the older jets but not as comfy as CRJs and E-Jets. I haven't been on an E2-Jet and most likely want to fly in one of them.

As a ramp agent, I love the embraer 175. Low enough you can close cargo nets standing on the ground, door for the bin is in the middle of the bin making stacking easier, and it has a vent inside the bin that blasts air in to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. CRJ aircraft require a special handrail that we have 1 of but we don't get those at my airport. They say the 737 is low to make ground servicing easier but it doesn't do that. You can't close the bin doors from outside without a very tall guy or a belt loader, you can't close the nets without a belt loader, and being low gets in the way of walking underneath. Long live embraer!

I certainly would like to see a large Canadian carrier like Air Canada to purchase planes made in its own country. Air Canada did buy Embraer's in the past but has chosen not to replace them with E2-!95's, even though the E2 is supposedly quieter and less fuel burn & in price, it's range is not the same as the A220.

Quiet!? Compared to older turboprops maybe, but it's still far louder than a jet. Never particularly liked flying on the Q400. It's particularly unpleasant if you're in one of the seat rows near the engines (8-12ish?) not only because of the noise but because of how the high wing and engine pods block your view.

Favourites are the ATR and E175/195, the Embraer is a wonderful plane, smooth and in the right hands can be landed to perfection (*Italian Chef Kiss"), only annoyance is how damn loud the APU is! The ATR is (IMO) a better plane than the Dash 8, as it's simpler (doesn't have/need an APU, engines can start off batteries if needed and do not need bleed air, mechanical flight controls etc ) and more economical on shorter routes. It also has both Bulk Loading and ULD freight variants. However its lower crosswind limits due to the gear position do make it a little less suited to rough environments, it needs to be parked facing into wind (due to the flight controls and potential damage), and it's more liable to tip during boarding due to the rear door.

For flying with the major US regionals the Embraer E-Jet series is always my preferred ride. The ability of their jets to use standard airport gates rather than the 'commuter terminal gates' at many major US airports makes plane changes and connections much easier and much more timely. The E jet series are very comfortable and with full sized exit doors at both front and rear of the cabins I much prefer them to the CRJ series of aircraft.

When I worked with Envoy we saw the E175 doing some limit-of-range routes like Dallas-Montreal. It's a great little plane, but range is an issue for long and thin, which is where A220 is cleaning up. However, I'd argue there is a big space out there for a new 50-seater which nobody seems to want to clean-sheet. So I guess we'll see the little E-135 and CRJ's for a long time to come!

Thank you very much for this very informative overview of the Regional-Jet-Market. I´m missing Saab - which isn´t of course an aircraft producer anymore, but was an important aircraft producer: the Saab 340 and the Saab 2000 are still in operation in many countries.

True. I heard the 2000 was so sophisticated that it could take off even if one prop failed in midflight! I've seen a demonstration video from Saab. My jaw hit the floor. The pilot clearly shut off one engine and it still took off.

@@largol33t1 The Saab 2000 has the reputation to be the most advanced Turboprob ever built. Unfortunately only a few numbers were sold, it was an economic failure which caused Saab from leaving the sphere of aircraft producers. The reasons for that are difficult to describe, mostly it is stated that the Saab 2000 was too expensive and advanced for most of the traditional Turboprob operating airlines while the other airlines choosed to buy regional jets instead of a turboprob. So the much more traditional Saab 340 in its both versions A and B was in opposite to the Saab 2000 and also the ATR 42 and 72 as much as the Dash 8 were huge economic successes, all of them much more traditional turboprobs. So it´s unfortunately also a story that the best and most modern technology doesn´t make always the race at the customers.

I am going to say that for strictly N. American routes the EMB fleet would be best due to comfort, cost and range, but for an airline that is looking to expand its route system, the A220 allows for a great plane on the regionals, but also gives a good platform to explore and inaugurate routes that will eventually be for larger aircraft (eg. Boston - Belfast or Cork).

In the T-prop league have flown the ATR and DHC-8 and also the SAAB 340, all fine aircraft. Been aboard a range of different CRJs and E-Jets too, the 190 is a good one to fly on. Kind of melancholy how Bombardier basically sold off all the different production lines, but at least that way the CJet was saved by the Airbus deal; really that came out of Boeing trying to muscle Bombardier off the market for things >100pax, and now instead of having the competition bear the label of neighbor Canada, it has the label of Airbus. In that seme vein, well, good thing that Embraer gets to stand on its own for now.

Regional aircraft are cheaper because in general most operators of them do not pay their staff the same pay scale but much less than main line carriers. Turbo props are also so fuel efficient they save quite a bit on that expense.
