No doubt despite their remoteness Shimshalis have been at the forefront when it comes to mountaineering in Pakistan. Their valley before 2001 was a three day walk by foot which turned into three hours after the villagers themselves took the initiative to work day and night on this road to connect it to the Karakorum highway.

They actually have a project about it. However you have to remember that the valley lies at more than 3000m above see level, so not a lot of plants grow that high naturally.
Amazing new story. Same old man told me in '95 that they are all descendants of convicted people from Mir of Hunza and Shimshal was used as a prison due to its inhospitable/remote/inaccessible nature. Most (but not all) of these prisoners were of political nature. They made their own road in 2003 i believe.
