Documentary: Charlotte's Hidden Valley Neighborhood - The Lived Experience (2021)

This Documentary is intended to counter the stigma of the Hidden Valley Neighborhood in Charlotte, NC, and present the lived experience of this family-oriented, diverse neighborhood. It’s presented by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's - Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP) in partnership with Hidden Valley residents, and produced by CHARP Researcher, Barbara Pinson Lash.
The Hidden Valley Neighborhood has seen many changes since its inception, beginning as an all White 'fairy tale' neighborhood, then changing to a prominent African-American neighborhood, to one scarred by gang violence that made national news headlines, to the relatively quiet Black and Latino community it is today. This documentary explores the lived experience of residents which has developed into a counter narrative. The hope is that by sharing it, the documentary will counter some of the negative stigma, and continue to encourage local media to refrain from referencing crime as happening in or near Hidden Valley if it in fact happened outside of Hidden Valley.

I am from Charlotte North Carolina. I am so glad that they corrected that story because when I first saw it living in Dallas Texas I was highly disappointed. Because I remember when they build hidden valley and black started to move in the seventies it was considered the elite community. So I'm glad that they cleared up the story. May God bless them and may they strive ahead.

Thanks - this was very helpful. I’m considering buying my first home, and the one I toured in this neighborhood really spoke to me. Perhaps we will become neighbors one day!

I grew up in Hidden Valley. We moved there in 1968. I remember when busing started, my mother brought the first black kids to Hidden Valley Elementary from Druid Hills. That first weekend, someone busted all the windows, cut tires and seats to the bus. We were kids and hadn't been taught racism. We just played together. My dad bought a pickup, just to take all the boys to football and baseball at Derita. Skin color didn't matter. Those were great times.

When my family moved there in 1973, we were blessed to have a very nice home, great neighbors, where the older white lady that lived next door (Mrs. Irene) was our resident "Candy Lady" and as sweet as they come. Hidden Valley was a blessing to me growing up! Of all the places we could have been raised in Charlotte, it was an honor to be raised in Hidden Valley!

hidden valley to me is everything in between 85, west sugar creek, and north tryon maybe those apartments are technically not part of hvk but they are literally just a couple feet away. Most of the murders in charlotte happen on the intersection of sugar creek and 85 which is just a couple feet from HVK.

Things have changed a lot over the years. Hidden Valley has never been a “real” bad neighborhood. We mover in in 1962 I think. Derita was our elementary school at first. Then Hidden Valley was built . Mom stayed there until she passed in 2020. Always had pretty good neighbors with the exception of a house on Squirrel Hill that is a rental. Our is a large lot because of the power lines passing through. Then house is being sold now. I hope that it does not become a rental property.

Today a white lady moved in across the street and introduced herself to me. Hidden Valley is slowly becoming gentrified. It started with the Latinos buying homes in H.V. and improving them. Now everytime someone moves out their home is updated and remodeled, property values are rising. Don't sell.
