'Doctors don't listen to the doomsayers! Stay in SA': Health minister on the NHI

Joe Phaala, minister of health, said doctors and healthcare workers should not leave SA after the passing of the NHI bill on May 15 2024. Though the government promises the NHI will provide improved health coverage to all South Africans, its implementation has been met with opposition and scepticism.
Some opposition parties are already threatening legal action.

@leoniea138 battery car chargers do run off of the electricity grid and not just from solar charging points, you should also take note that space X(Elon musk own company that provides internet) will not come to South Africa due to BEE so their is a high likelihood that we can see major constraints on Tesla expanding in South Africa. Most other car brands use he electrical grid, meaning Eskom. Also...it's not free you have to own a Tesla and it's only for your car, you still need to power your house and busines...😂 eskom will be here for a while

Listen, this is not a racial issue or even about poor people. This is about the taxes. 200bn in tax revenue will be collected to loot by the ANC if this bill gets implemented. Government workers are generally well paid but not every civil servant can afford R1500 a month to pay for unemployed people's health care. Tax payers are stretched thin. Municipal rates have doubled in some parts of the country, electricity charges have increased but no reliable supply. Corruption and cadre deployment ruined public hospitals. Medical Aid only became a thing because public hospitals are death traps but now they want to take that away? You think people want to pay more for less services again? The ANC is running this country into the ground. Their loyalists are the people either benefitting from the corruption or are the ones suffering the most. Maybe the failing education system is responsible for people who can't think and they keep voting for the ANC- everything is broken in this country thanks to the ANC. They couldn't even fix the water treatment plants and sort out the damage caused in Durban by the floods two years ago... How will they run this NHI?

the private sector has a PROVEN track record in running things responsibly. the govement should rather give the allocated budget for the public hospitals to the private sector and tell them to take over the public sector and manage it along with the private hospitals - the medical aids then get to keep their clients , the public hospitals will be way better run , there will be accountability, the public will keep confidence in the health care system , the medical funds for a rainy day will be ring fenced and used for what they needed for ... medical issues! this is NOT what the government wants at all!!! they want to get their hands on the cookie jar and screw the public, we cant afford to let this happen!

If this was such a fantastic idea surely doctors, who are amongst the most intelligent members of society, would be the first to see that it is going to be great……. In this case, a statement like this is a bit worrying tbh. ANC rats signing in a law just before elections when they have no cooking clue how they are going to fund it. 20% of the population can’t fund 80%. The only way SA will become successful is if more people get employed and pay taxes, and the government stops stealing it all.

When you elect leaders who cannot govern, who are put in positions based on affiliation instead of competency. You get this. Had the ANC actually worked for the people, they would have built hospitals and better maintained the existing ones. Unfortunately all the monies funnelled to ESKOM, SAA, Denel etc could have been used for such but then…

As a software developer, I'll be leaving What does it have to do with NHI, nothing at all, the country is just clearly captured by politicians who don't need to live with the effects of their policies. NHI is just a hail Mary for the ANC, just another way of saying "more free stuff". Nothing is free, and we clearly can't afford this.

Software Engineer here, nice to see another tech joining the exodus. Been slumming it in this 4th world backwater for my parents, this has 'thankfully' been the final push too far for them, they're in their 60's and aren't going to be subjected to the whims of the anc wrt their healthcare. All I can say is, 'Thank God for remote work and US Dollars'. Looks like Buenos Aires it is.

I don't think doctors are listening to the doomsayers. They are smart enough to make their own decisions, based on their own conclusions. And so is the rest of us. We don't have much hope. After all, the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.
