    @nathaann8790 Your comment made me realise something about the salt. The Doctor was worried that he had introduced (salt-based) superstition at the edge of the universe... and the box of the Toymaker had to be "bound in salt" - which seemed like a very Supernatural-y thing to me.. but maybe it relates back to the salt superstition :3

    @@shanajeangedeon9060 what does that have to do with anything? They can think more than one thing is bad lol it’s not like I watch this and said “this was pretty good but but since David Tennant had a bad Christmas special once that bumped it up to great.” Like… huh? It was weird how it was a straight up fantasy magic show. Like Doctor Who never had straight up magic. That was the whole thing of it. That even the most fantastic parts of the story could technically be real because it was all supposed to be in interdimensional, intergalactic and with time travel. But it was never like “here are luck goblins from the space between dimensions that thrive on coincidence”. I’m just hoping that they did that only because it was the Christmas special and they wanted to keep it as something that people could enjoy whether they knew the story of Doctor Who or not. I didn’t dislike it. It was just odd, and very unlike Doctor Who until the end.

  • @shanajeangedeon9060

    @shanajeangedeon9060

    @speeeee35 My comment was simply to point out that it's similar to David Tennant's Christmas special. If they believe that his was bad too, then they are entitled to their opinion. You are also entitled to yours, even if we don't agree. Doctor Who even references IN the special that there is still logic in the newer creatures and that it isn't straight-up magic when Ruby flat out asks and Doctor corrects her by saying "there's still rules to them". These newer villains are likely all going to relate to the Toymaker in some way for a while and then whoever "The Boss" is, but some of them might be creatures from other dimensions with different "rules" since Doctor "cast salt and played a game" at the edge of the universe (where the laws of creation are much more loose and uncontrolled). Besides, it's not like we haven't faced fantastical and/or creatures based on already popular concepts in Doctor Who (ex: giving the existence of vampire legends some logic with Amy and Rory, meeting literal Satan, the weeping angels is playing with the already popular idea of living gargoyles on churches at first, The royal family being Werewolves, Toymaker twisting reality on both occasions, the Vashta Nerada being the idea of living shadows, etc.)

    Genuinly loved all of this episode. The idea of goblins riding coincidences back thru time, and causing "accidents" to season their food, was such a unique concept. Also, gotta say, the song worked the complete oppisite for me than it did one of you. Anytime a villain bursts into song, the intimidation factor gets raised for me by a ton. Nothing screems confidence more than that. They are literally just playing with their food. It also didn't hurt that the song SLAPPED! Gonna have that stuck in my head all day 🤣

    Russell T Davies is really playing on the myth/fairytale element, and it all links in to the line of salt. The Doctor doing that brought in the toymaker, it brought the myth of bigeneration, and it’s brought in goblins. Russell also had said the next series will have a much more fantasy element to it. The mavity stuff is also showing how easy it can be for time to be changed, and him going back in the end also changed Mrs Flood, she didn’t know what a Tardis was before he went back.

It's a story about family, a beautiful family and its fun and the message is love and found family and it's so honestly perfect for Christmas. What more can you want from a Christmas episode? We got a wonderful intro to Ruby's life and the promise of so much more. Plus this is technically Special #4 not the new season so it was kinda always gonna be a standalone in more ways than not. So many things were set up and it was all feel good if you get out of your head and enjoy the damn show.

    I love some of the little Easter eggs in this. Like how Ruby at the start of the episode is filming “Who do you think you are” with Davina, which if you are not from the U.K. Davina McCall actually hosts that show with another tv presenter. She also mentioned about moving from Manchester, which the actress that plays Ruby appeared in a British soap opera called Coronation Street before doing Doctor who, which is supposed to be set up in the Manchester area.

    There were a few little things, like I doubt the baby would be dropped off in Foster Care on the day it's born. It was basically a fun episode and so far the writing is better than they gave Jodie. I like the "why are you crying then?" nod to Amy Pond's crying when she's had forgotten Rory. I think the baby story could work it's way out through the season, like the Impossible Girl. I can't wait to see who Mrs Flood turns out to be. She's new to the Who series, but, has done voice work with Big Finish Doctor Who.

Because we all know that the TARDIS is a sentient being, and she cares for the Doctor. Therefore, she knows Ruby will be the right person to accompany the Doctor on their journey ahead. So excited!!!

    I liked everything and I don't care about nit-picking everything. Dr Who is back to its timey wimey camp super cheesy self (until we get another family of blood or smth). This special is not so much about a villain than It is about introducing Ruby and the Doctor to us. Who hasn't felt so much like a family show to watch with your kids (which I did) since a long time. The convoluted story line is nothing new either, I think people have put too much expectations on that reboot without checking what Davies has already done on Who before. You know Davies, you know half that stuff is going to come back to haunt us at some point. Loved it, hope they continue in that way.

Either that or Mrs.Floods is The Master, but I'm okay with combining them where Ruby is the clone of The Master, or some other Time Lord.

    I feel like they told us who her mom is without telling us who it is. It's the TV lady. It would make sense. It would be a huge coincidence if the person you went to to look up your parents happened to be your mom after all. It would explain why no results came back if she didn't want to be found out. And it would explain them both having bad luck based on the shared coincidence.

  • @Lady-Y

    In response to the "weird convoluted concepts," like coincidences and Goblins and magic, part of it is supposed to be a result of the Toymaker ("my legions are coming"). Specifically, him entering our universe creates tears in the fabric of reality which break down our scientific laws of space and time, essentially allowing ANYTHING to happen beyond scientific limitations. Hence it being possible for explicitly suppernatural beings, like Goblins, to show up. They've said the next season will more explicitly explore this idea, but that's also part of why the lady was able to break the fourth wall at the end of the episode. Like, that shouldn't be possible in-universe, but the aftermath of the Toymaker creating tears in scientific laws now allows it to.
