  • @alexlovespeace

    So the reason they feel underpaid is because there is a huge shortage of nurses nationwide. The vast majority of nurses are taking on 5-8 patients when they actually should be caring for a maximum of four. If you’re working 12 hour shifts where you can’t even take your lunch break because you’re too busy, you’re going to feel underpaid. This is why travel nursing is becoming more popular. Travel nurses are paid more and get contracted to work in hospitals that are understaffed. The only down side is the lack of stability that comes with traveling to new hospitals every few months. You leave your friends and family behind to be shipped off somewhere new where you know nobody.

  • @APatient

    @APatient

    I'm a BSN, RN. First, yes even while paid well it does not seem well enough for the amount of work that we do. Yes, we live at work because every unit is short-staffed and they always need someone but usually most RNs work 3 days/week for ~12hours. In ~2 months of work as a new "lower-paid" nurse, I put away 10k into savings after all my bills and fun spending. However, depending on where you live the cost of living may be higher thus draining their income faster 🤷🏾‍♀️

    Per hour even a full fledge doctor surgeon post residency can end up earning less then a 7 to 11 year experienced nurse (same age). Remember doctors have way shittier hours then most nurses. 80 to 140 hours depending on how unlucky u get vs a nurses 36 to 48 Since u are required to pay time and half for every hour between 40 and 50 and double time after that. 80 hours translates to roughly 120 paid hours. Consider that when comparing pay. Doctors dont get as much as you think

Without the nurses the doctors wouldn’t be able to help anyone. Doctors also do make way way way more money, that guys just in residency rn. Soon enough he’ll be making 100-200k + annually. The doctor making 60k is still finishing his residency- he’s not a full time practicing doctor yet. Also 60k is the starting salary for residency/ meaning he is fresh out of medical school. The minute he steps out into the world as a full fledged doctor he’ll make anywhere between 300k-1 mil/year depending on what kind of doctor he his.

We leave work at work. Doctors depending on the specialty work anywhere from 8-16 hour days 5-6 days a week and still have to work to finish charts, labs, and xrays at home. You guys must really love helping people. High performing software engineering make 200k out of 4yrs of school and after 5+ years 500K+ (40-60hrs/wk). And if you join a good company and get lucky, with stock/options it will be way more than that. Investment banking/private equity will have similar numbers but will hit the higher ones faster with much further upper bound, but their work hours are similar to medicine(80hrs+). It's a shame hearing the salary numbers for medicine considering for how many years of schooling, the debt it requires, and how necessary they are to society. From other videos it seems like doctors at their peak will make similar to experienced engineers/mid-level bankers, but much later in their career like 8yrs later. It makes me worry about the medical field going forward as talent would prefer other fields. You should make a video on the medical industry and how it is losing talent to other more lucrative fields.

    Only a very small subset of software engineers actually make that money. You're talking about those who get jobs at a handful of companies, but if you look at the average software engineer who didn't get lucky enough to land a MANGA job or similar, the average is much lower. We're talking 60-80k. But of course, if you want to look at the top 99th percentile sure you've got people making 200k but that's just not the real world.

    @@Metruzanca Sure it is the higher bound, but probably not 99th percentile. It is much more common than becoming a doctors. Just consider how many students get admitted to medical school annually versus how many students get hired by high paying tech companies (not to mention how much more difficult it is to get into medicine). There are many many more companies than MANGA that offer competitive salaries. Small companies you never even heard of offering 200K+ for a few years of experience. If you look at a person who is intelligent enough to get into medicine, they can easily be a top performer in the tech if they had interest in it. Which goes back to my concern that if we have a talented individual who is interested in both medicine and tech, the current environment favors the tech path much more which means one less talented doctor, which arguable is more important to our society.

    @@bdc225 Your two comments are inconsistent. "200K+ for a few years of experience" is very different from "200k out of 4yrs of school" 4yrs of school is not anywhere equivalent to 4yrs of experience. With 4years of experience, you can easily be in the range of 200-500k. 200k for a newgrad? Still pretty uncommon. But I see that we're using two different measurements. I'm strictly talking about overall numbers of new software engineers, how many of those are in big companies with really big salaries. While you're looking at the top performing engineers vs newgrad doctors salaries and seeing that of course theres more top performing engineers. But considering doctors have a much longer path than software engineers who don't even need to go to college, its quite obvious why theres a big difference. I also disagree with your last point. Sure we need doctors, but we only have so many doctor positions available. I'd much rather that talented person take a dual interest and go into something like biotech to work on tech that doctors use. Unfortunately, I bet these positions are few and far between because (at least in the US) theres a lot of hoops to jump thru to make a medical tech product, so most people interested in making tech products don't go into these fields.

    @@Metruzanca The 200K+ for few years of experience comment was meant to describe the average that is easily attainable, which you agree with. 4yoe for 200-500K is reasonable and if you compare this to their other video discussing doctor salaries, that is the same range for different types of doctors after medical school, some specialties requiring more schooling than others. Sure, the new grads who do land those 200K+ out of school we can say are 99th, but to get 500k after some yoe (less than medical school + residency) is not 99th percentile is what i was trying to say, which clearly you agree with. My point was that the amount of effort and time required for doctors to hit similar earning is much greater compared to career in tech along with way more student debt. Overtime this would likely lead to a lot of people choosing tech over medicine which may have negative impact on medical progression. I don't think you disagree with that, and if you do you're really just picking out minor details.
