Doctor Strikes: A step too far before the election? Feat. Dr. Andrew Meyerson | Jeremy Vine

Junior doctors have started their 11th walkout this morning, demanding a 35% pay rise. Their strike, which the NHS say will cause major disruption, will end on Tuesday - 48 hours before voters go to the polls.
An NHS executive has said there is 'no reason' for industrial action this close to an election, especially as both the Tories and Labour have said they'll restart negotiations.
Matthew Taylor of the NHS Confederation said: "When no political party is in a position to bring the dispute to a close', strikes are a 'bitter pill to swallow for staff and patients'. who have to plug the gaps and patients who will have their appointments cancelled or delayed.'
The BMA have said the strikes are an opportunity for the Prime Minister to show he 'cares' about junior doctors 'even at this late stage'.

Did you know Jeremy that a newly qualified Physician Associate with 2 year Post 3-year science graduate qualification does a 9 to 5 job and gets 35% more basic salary than a newly qualified Medical Doctor with 5 or 6 years Medical qualification with no out of hours working, no prescribing and no regulation?

The doctors and nurses need to keep up the pressure because it makes no difference if labour or tories win

Jeremy, patients are dying every day. That's why the NHS staff are striking, the wards are unsafe BECAUSE the staff are leaving in droves because they are appallingly paid, not on what the papers say they earn either!

They did have payrises all NHS staff got rises in line with inflation. This is a cynical attempt by the leftie unions to do damage to the Tories.

@@user-ol3xe5fz4u The NHS did get payrises since 2010. Those payrises were in line with or just below inflation which has averaged at 3.45%. over that period. Given that recent inflation rates rose to above 10% that indicates that at times inflation was lower than the 3.45% infact at times it was as low as 0.7%. These strikes at this time are nothing more than a political ploy by left leaning unions to help remove the Tories from office. Any other time than just before an election then there is room for doubt. But right now!!!!??? It is a sad state of affairs, that unions representing what is a caring profession are putting patients at risk for political reasons.

@@patricklee6206there were literally 3 periods of pay freeze in that time? What are you on about? I think you are confusing doctors with other NHS workers, they are on a completely different contract and have had a much bigger real terms pay cut

Firefighters got a substantial pay rise, they are employed by the home office and not the NHS. This government has been privatising the NHS by stealth for 14 years.
