Doctor Reacts To The Good Doctor (Original Korean Version)

The Good Doctor is one of my favorite medical dramas, but I just found our recently that the version I watch on CBS with Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy is a remake of a Korean show by the same name! I hopped on Viki and stream the first episode to see what was up. I was surprised to see how similar the story was to the American series, depicting Joo Won and Park Shi-On, the brilliant young doctor with Autistim Spectrum Disorder, or ASD. As always with these med dramas, I’m a little disappointed in some of their representations of medicine. Are there any other K-Dramas you want me to check out? Let me know down below!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Korean dramas don't usually do a lot of gorey effects. They heavily rely on the drama between characters, rather than the incident itself. I think it has to do with how afternoon/evening television is censored/rated.

LOL tell that to the Korean show "Tunnel". That show gave us a VERY deep look at the gruesome murders of women at the hands of a serial killer. We saw the terrible way he used women's tights to strangle them. It wasn't just once or twice. We saw it (in present day, photos, or flashbacks) almost every episode. The blood is censored, but the scenes do play out very slow and morbidly detailed.

"Did we just flat out copy this show ?" You have NO IDEA how many movies you watch with american casts and crews were straight up lifted from other continents. Most other countries just show other's movies with subtitles, but american productions usually redo the movies with american actors and locations. I think it's a shame, because you miss a bunch of cool foreign cultural elements, but US media in general underestimate people's ability to empathize with different people. It's like they want you to forget other countries even exist (unless there's a terrorist organization involved, then they just HAVE to be foreign). US media is just weird.

Hey Dr. Mike! I've been binge watching your videos and I'm loving them, they're very entertaining and knowledgeable❣️ I'm Brazilian, currently living in Brazil and I've been diagnosed with RRMS at the age of 39/40. Thankfully I've been referred to an amazing neurologist that has been helping me and my family deal with everything he can. Have you ever diagnosed a pacient with MS? I lived in the U.S. from 3 to 12 years of age. Therefore my "língua mater" is English, even though I speak "Brazilian" Portuguese very well. And I sympathize with your story. When I returned to Brazil, I hated it (LOL). I couldn't grasp the nuances of "Brazilian" Portuguese and was constantly made fun of. But, since I'd already tackled such "bullying" in the U.S., which was way less than in Brazil. I kinda knew how to react and I used what you say in many of your videos. I became positive and asked myself: "Why are these children attacking me? Is it because they're scared of me? Is it because I have knowledge that they don't have? Or is it genuinely dislike for my person?". I was a bit arrogant in my preteens/teens and only realized this later in life, late teens to early adulthood, and began abhorring it. It was my baby sister who showed me one of your videos about headaches. I've always had them, headaches, since I started menstruating. And after my diagnosis (RRMS) they've become a reccuring thing. Specially before or after my period. I've consulted with my neurologist and we've been trying different things to tackle this problem. I know it's not ideal, but I have to have a fan in my room as I sleep. Because if I don't the headaches are horrible and I'm not able to sleep!!!! And it's better than filling myself up with analgesics everytime I get these headaches. Well, I hope this (essay, LOL) finds you *happy and healthy*. Best regards. Talita (AKA: Lita) from Brazil. P.S.: Just thought of sharing a bit and, who knows, maybe you've got some pointers for us who suffer with MS. 🤔😎👍🏻

He doesn't need special tools - he's superhuman and knows everything. The thing I love about Kdramas is that they always put a terminology explanation on the screen. All western shows just take it from the point that the viewers are informed of every term that is used. Some specific dramas even use a huge lot of terminology without verbally explaining it to its viewers. Kdramas simply give you a small "dictionary" on the screen. PS. As someone who grew up in Korea one of the first things I teach my foreign friends who visit is Korea's "hurry hurry" culture. He even says it in this episode too! The fact it took that long for an ambulance to come or the fact no one called for help (when people are almost always on their phones there) doesn't seem possible. They come pretty much within mins. They are actually at a train station, even more so at these places medics are always present. Thanks for reacting to this Dr. Mike!

In most medical K-dramas, the drama comes from (1) hospital politics - fighting for higher positions by removing someone, (2) doctors fighting over how to diagnose a patient, (3) hospital romance, (4) some sort of tragedy (patience or some main character dying), and (5) malpractice mystery - someone trying to prove that there was a covered-up malpractice case. Therefore, someone saying that they will risk their hospital position for something is a common trope in medical k-drama. This would allow drama in point (1) or (5)

"Is this a one-to-one adaptation of the show?" Well, it's kinda a yeah and a no. Cos the American adaptation actually add plenty of extra sexual drama that didn't exist in the original as well as well as assign Shaun into general surgery dept. Whereas in the original Sion was assigned to the paediatric dept specifically. In fact, the main surgeon here was a thoracic doctor who specialise in paediatric cases if i remembered correctly.

There is no such thing as encouragement or good will by none 'good' family members, lovers or anyone else unless they're gonna die within the next 50 chapters/pages or 5 episodes (depending on what format it's in) or eventually become the lover. It's literally just 'look at the mc, they're such a kind, wonderful, sophisticated individual for being a decent human being. Everyone else besides them and their companions are vile, selfish, disgusting trash that you should not even think of as human.' and you can apply this to pretty much everything with a 96% chance of getting a match (excluding when the mc is very clearly established to be a villain) It's so incredibly pretentious and can get very annoying very fast until you can turn off the reasoning in your brain

Actually The Good Doctor was not copied but a remaked one. The writer showed the respect to the original version as giving the name Shawn (si-on) to the main character. We have also Japanese version of Si-on. It was really wonderful to find a cultural difference and share common feeling about life itself in 3 dramas.

It's a good thing that you've finally seen the original version of Good Doctor! It was a good drama, albeit it's not perfect. While being a medical drama, it's also meant to be shown as a melodrama, hence, its emotional story telling and to empathize with the autism community. It also has 20 episodes, hence, the episodes are packed with great character development. As the drama was made in 2013, graphics and cinematography aren't really as its best but newer korean medical dramas have become better as years go by. Of course, this will still be a classic and this drama is a blessing to korean dramas and even to those enjoy the American adaptation. :)

And as a medical student I got to learn some interesting diseases and procedures from the drama. Also another neuroscience related medical kdrama is called "Doctors" also known as "Doctor Crush" with Park ShinHye and KimRaewon as the leads. It's a nice one too.

You have to take into account that the Korean version was released in 2013 and probably with a smaller budget than the American one which was released in 2017. They had a lot of time to research and fix up amy errors. Also gore is not really allowed on Korean TV so thats why the special effects are not the best. This is one of my favorite K-dramas of all time and I highly recommend to watch the whole thing.

I feel like that end quote from the doctor saying “I will leave my position” is culturally accurate for where the story is set. The good doctor korean version was actually released as early as 2013, therefore the new American version, more recent, has « corrected » some of the parts that were more inaccurate in the first version, I feel. However, I’ve watched both series and the major difference resides in the fact that the original version takes place in the pediatrics. Moreover, the doctor is given different characteristics to his autism, such as a strong desire to save those kids. He tries to communicate with them, and thanks them after each operation.

Happy that you're finally covering the Korean med dramas I would really like for you to react to 1. Dr. Romantic - this show is insane!! 2. Doctors - actually one of my favorite medical dramas 3. Live Upto Your Name: I wanna know your take on traditional and current medical procedures. Now to the criticism...... The one thing that kinda irrrks me is you comparing the procedures from years ago to the most resent ones and technology from then and now, I acknowledge that it shouldn't be so different from a medical standpoint but come on you don't expect yesterday to be more developed than today, that's why there's research and all to make sure there's a better option to what's being done today as @MamaDoctorJones would put it, they did the best they could with the information they had at that point in time. Argument comes from the mouth to mouth thingy and the special effect situation. Otherwise I looooove your work so far🙌

I think you might enjoy a show called “Forever”. It is not a medical drama but the main character was a doctor for a long time and works as a medical examiner so there is a lot of “medical talk”. It is free on CW Seed and it’s probably on other streaming services too. I really enjoyed it and wish there was more than one season.
