    The mental thing was a huge one for me. I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Turns out it was "only" a panic attack. I felt so silly and stupid for wasting everyone's time for something that "wasn't a big deal." The doctor and the nurses quickly shut that down. They were so kind, and asked if I was super stressed. I was in the process of quitting a much loved job at the time, and I was. In addition to telling me to make an appointment with my GP, they recommend seeing a councilor if I felt it appropriate, told me to take a few days off and to do some things that relax me. I felt so validated that it was serious and I was right to come in.

  • @NeuroPunkNonsense

    @NeuroPunkNonsense

    There's no "only" about a panic attack. People with them are regularly convinced they're dying. That's huge and should 100% be taken seriously. I am so glad that the medical professionals you saw treated this experience, and you, with the level of respect and seriousness warranted.

    i get panic attacks somewhat frequently, so i know how awful they feel, and it makes me so happy to hear they were so understanding and took you seriously. like im absolutely over the moon. im so glad they validated you and i hope youre doing well! i also wanted to share that when my mom witnessed me having a panic attack for the first time, she absolutely thought i was having a heart attack, because i kept grabbing at my chest and saying i couldnt breathe (but was not in the right state of mind to articulate what was happening beyond that). it apparently scared the life out of her. panic attacks are much more serious than some people realize and i hope more doctors react the way yours did.

    8:42 I remember that very year (2019) I realized I had a really bad physical state; I ate so much pasta in a week (no fruits, vegetables, meat or other stuff), I was sleepy all day, constant headaches, and when I started struggling with insomnia I went to see a doctor. My triglycerides were at + 300; and instead of giving me a diet or medication, my doctor told me to check my mental health first because she wanted to find the root of the problem. Turns out I had depression, and because of that I got inside a cycle of no energy to cook -> eat poorly and get no energy. I bought veggies that rot after a while because I didn't felt like making a salad. I bought meat but I always forgot to defrost it. I couldn't exercise because I felt really tired all the time. Once I started therapy, I was able to get out of that cycle and lower my levels; though I still struggle sometimes nowadays.

    aleeza ahmad That reminds me... People at my school find it very weird that I like to listen to music, and pace around in a room while Daydreaming. I have ADHD, and due to that I’m hyper/restless a lot, so this helps me deal with that. I often do it twice a day for about 15-20 minutes each time. So, while I do sit/lay down a lot, I do get up a lot since I get restless. Yet, kids find it weird when they hear I do this. When, medical professionals say that it might be healthy to actually get up and walk around. *_So..._*

They were going to put her fully under and when I told her if she had used weed in the last 60 days or so she needs to tell her team for the surgery. She was so confused until I told her that things can go wrong with whatever used to put her under. Like she could wake up in the middle, it could effect her heart rate and things. I had to tell her this at least 5 times until she finally got it in her brain.

    @doctormike: I sit/lay 23h / day and feel terrible. Can confirm. But one thing to note regarding doctor-patient confidentiality - there's usually exceptions to the rule (besides GSWs): if you express intent to harm yourself or others. The problem is that this exception gets bent - like with drug use. Not only have docs broken the rule, some go so far to call cops or child-social services if they suspect the patient will go on using drugs after the appointment, usually making the situation for the patient and his family far worse. I'd love to hear you address that and report on your experiences and what you've heard from other docs. Love your videos, thanks a lot :)

    I really resonate with the fact that screenings and really just going to the doctor's in general for one problem can raise awareness about another. I went to my normal doctor for a high heart rate and shortness of breath and while we didn't find out why my heart was being weird and we did have to go through a cardiology and neurology referral, after seeing the neurologist he diagnosed me with cluster migraines. completely unrelated to the original problem I came in for, that I do still have, but hey, now I know something that may have caused confusion in the future.

First thing I did when I got diagnosed after pain and swelling in my hands, I got seriously back into playing guitar and now my hands are strong as F! There's so many riffs I haven't learnt yet! I also do Pilates and go out hiking in the countryside every chance I get (3-4 times a week) and just walking whenever I can. Keeping strong a flexible is just as important as my immunosuppressants and anti-inflammatory meds, and I don't need the anti-inflammatories as much now I'm exercising much better. I can't cure RA, I can fight it off better by staying strong and flexible and not letting it take over my life before it has to.

    Yeah, that last one for sure. I've been dealing with on and off knee pain for years now. My PCP couldn't figure out what could be causing it, so he referred me to an orthopedic doctor. He diagnosed me with patellofemoral pain syndrome. He said that we'd start with physical therapy and if that there was no improvement then we'd move onto the mri. My PT, on top of that suspects that I might have a small meniscul tear as well, secondary to the patellofemoral pain syndrome and gave me exercises to help with that as well. I've only been doing it for about a week now, but it's already helped since I feel like I can put some weight on it again without the feeling of weakness or pain in it, at least for a short time, which is more than previously. I think a conservative approach is better because it can help save money by avoiding unnecessary expensive procedures such as an mri or surgery. You want to rule out the more conservative and less invasive options first since it's easier for the body to recover from exercise for example than a wound from surgery.

    Over all school makes it difficult for kids. It's played a good part in why stress, depression and anxiety levels are so high in pre-teens and teens. Not moving around much in middle and high school when you are already going through hormonal changes is not healthy. It's even worse for students... who let's say got surgery on their entire spine when they were a going to be a freshman. An entire fusing of the spine forced to sit for hours and then make it to the next class, wherever it was in the school within five minutes. That's just one circumstance where there is a situational obstruction to the already haphazard set up of being a student. My mental health actually became worse after school though because I had friends to distract me and then a long term relationship which was all new to me in high school. Now, after another surgery on my back which caused me to stop going to university, which was the only thing that helped with depression after spending years at the end of high school submerged in it because I wasn't going anywhere with myself.. I've fallen into a situation of no distractions like friends or relationships to keep my mind from depression. I mean who really needs to have a healthy mind anyways, right?.. .. well, this just turned into a me comment **clears throat ** yes, I concur with this reply.

Which just makes me mad because ( I am not going to talk about it much) but I had depression. And I hated it and Dr. Mike's statements are 100% correct because you have to take care mentally and take care of yourself. Just cause you think I am fine, as long as I am ok physically everything is ok and not as important is not healthy and you got to take care of yourself Pls if not for yourself than for the people you love!

Only give me pills that were not effective. I asked a 3rd yr medical student if there was anything vital I had to watch out for. I stopped by the local medical store. Purchased a 14 gauge 3-1/2". I work it to the pressure. And wow. So much better. Over time the pressure came to the bottom layers of skin. Where I would lance the skin to drain it. I've since cauterized them open with a hot scalpel.

    Yeah, but there are conditions where google search is the most likely way to find help. Try endometrosis, sience does not know what causes it and why suffering and observable demage do not add up. There is not a real treatment for it, most gynocologists do not realy know a whole lot about it and instead of a diagnosis you will most likely just get the advise, to take more painkillers or just stop whining, other women work whithout problem while having there period. With googling you are more likely to find out, that endometriosis exists, find one of the few specialists and find others who suffer from it so you get ideas what might work for you to keep the suffering to a minimum. Also a medical degree just covers a tiny portion of all that is to be knowen when it comes to medicine, the human body is way to complex as that you could know all about only your own field of expertise. So many times a dr. wanted to perscribe something to me, that interacts with another medication I take, I don't blame them for it, there are way to many substances to know all interaction, but because of that it is dangerous to just trust there judgement blindely. Always read about it and ask for specifics! If a Dr. feels threatend and reacts arrogant to beeing questioned look for another!!! Medicational interactions can kill! Better you ask and if they are not sure they look it up, than taking something that renders something you absolutly need useless or turn a low dosage into an overdosage!

Being honest and just look it up instead of guessing can save patients so much suffering.

    While I do agree that doctors should be trusted more than a WebMD result of all your symptoms, I also agree with Serena Odonata in that, if a doctor starts getting defensive, aggressive and arrogant about their position as a doctor, perhaps look for another opinion. Doctors are people too and can be imperfect. Doctor Mike says that doctors have your best interests in mind, and that may be true for a lot of them, but definitely not true for all of them. Doctors are imperfect and the mistakes that can come from arrogance are a stupid thing to die for. If your are having 9/10 pain every waking moment, and the doctor says its all in your head and that you should take some Tylenol, then gets upset when you insist something is very wrong, find another doctor.

    When my son had an unusual rash on his legs and the first doctor we saw had no clue what it was. The pediatrician wasn't sure either. After I told his pediatrician that the only thing I had found online resembling it was Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP), they looked it up and agreed/confirmed that was what his rash was and formally diagnosed him. There's nothing wrong with a Google search as long as you get confirmation from a medical professional that they agree with your assessment.

I was in Taw Kwan Do for a long time when I was a teenager, so I remember so many things to let my body breathe and relax. It helps for the back pain as well. And fixing your posture while you type so you're not hunched over. Obviously, sometimes you sit however you feel comfortable, maybe because we're tired, or we had a long hard call, or an overly complicated case to work and we just bleh on the chair. But it is good to start a small routine of at least stretches and drinking water.
