Doctor Fact-Checks UberFacts Tweets

I’M HIRING AN EDITOR / MOTION GRAPHICS DESIGNER: forms.gle/31KPoSF3V1xAmPo8A
UberFacts is a highly popular social media account that posts interesting “facts” across Twitter and other platforms. The problem? They almost never reveal their sources for this information. To make sure everything is on the up and up, I decided to dive into some UberFacts health tweets and research just how accurate these “facts” really are. While lots of these facts are technically “true”, there is a lot more nuance necessary to really understand a lot of them. Today I talked about whether you can actually die from a broken heart, how long it takes the average person to fall asleep, sharing DNA during kisses, cuddling dogs, the speed or a sneeze, blood alcohol levels, pentagon Viagra spending, the effects of caffeine in coffee, the smell of sweat, and the point of our hair. Any other facts you want me to verify? Post them down below!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

    When I was in high school I saw a doctor due to having trouble falling asleep, depression and anxiety. She asked how long it took for me to fall asleep and when I responded "2-3 hours if I'm lucky". She said that it wasn't THAT long and it was normal. It made me feel so stupid and like I was overreacting. She didn't even acknowledge the depression and anxiety. What happened? Self-harm, insecurity and even deeper depression happened and I didn't understand why I was feeling and reacting this way. She had stated I was over-reacting so I felt so bad and stupid. She sucked and I wish I could go back and tell myself to see another doctor to get help. Because She just made it worse by not taking me seriously. Nowadays when I'm not in my depressive periods I fall asleep in about 30 minutes and understand what she said was absolute horses**t

    Doctor Mike, I have a video suggestion. I found this game called "Reanimation Inc. 911 Realistic Doctor Simulation". I've tried it, and it is really different. It is not a barrage of ads and not a "put scalpel and organ here, thenthere, then there". It is "here's a patient, save him/her, goodluck bye". For those who doesn't have prior knowledge, you will get to experience first-hand what it feels like to be forced to do medical procedures and not know anything and end up killing the patient. I shall spam whether you like it or not. Gotta do it to see it.

    For caffeine addicts, I'd say often it is not the caffeine that is dictating your mood and alertness, but the hydration. I used to consume heavy caffeine in the mornings, but started hydrating instead initially with squash and water. It was never an objective to cut down on energy drinks and coffee, but I did because hydrating in the morning did more for me than caffeine did.

  • @emordnilap4747

    @emordnilap4747

    Hydration is definitely important, and caffeine is a diuretic, so obviously not going to help with that. But for some people small, to moderate amounts of caffeine can act as an antidepressant. I have suffered from depression since childhood, and find it helps. Not huge amounts of it-one, sometimes two, rarely three cups of coffee a day. And I avoid it for at least ten hours before bed. Of course, for those consuming huge amounts, it can certainly be a problem. I always have water, and coffee in the morning.

    Fun fact: the term "takotsubo" comes from Japanese and it actually means a trap that is used to catch octopuses. The term is used to describe the effects of a "heartbreak" because a emotionally significant trauma changes the shape of your heart so, that it's a bit wider at the bottom, therefore resembling an actual takotsubo.

The 2 brothers ended up with their leg in traction then a body cast, my son who was about 10.. ended up in the hospital for weeks (he’s also allergic to most pain meds and antibiotics) then in a wheelchair with pins in his leg. @@Epiphun Yes but it's highly dependent on the downstream effects of your migraine. For some, caffeine is actually a trigger. However, for others, because caffeine as a vasoconstrictor can reduce the dilation of blood vessels, they have pain relief because vasodilation in the nerves in the head is partly responsible for the pain of migraine (see: Excedrin, a common migraine-treatment medication which contains caffeine). There is still lots of uncertainty with the physical mechanism of migraine though.

    As someone with ADHD - we have neurodevelopmental differences in how our brains respond to stimulants, and that varies from person to person of course. Interestingly, one of Caffiene’s effects in anyone is to increase dopamine levels (that’s the reward neurotransmitter). In ADHD, there is often a deficiency of that, so that probably contributes to the differences in how caffeine is processed. For me (Combined type ADHD), Caffiene and/or stimulant medication won’t make me hyper unless its an extreme amount of caffiene right when I take my meds, but it will help me calm down, organize my thoughts, and enter a flow state easier. I can’t have strong coffee right when I wake up tho because then I will want to go back to sleep lol. However, for one of my friends who was extremely on the hyperactive end of the spectrum, Caffiene would have such a relaxing effect it would put him right to sleep at any time of day or night.

    what my son's doctor told me when he was diagnosed... that caffeine has the *opposite* affect on kids up to puberty, it actually calms instead of stimulates. He told me to give my son coffee along with his meds to help him calm down. It might also explain why my Russian granny used to put coffee in my baby bottle ;)

    Hey dr.mike; I’d like to add a slight addendum to the bit on the femur. My mother spiral fractured hers by walking in flip flops and catching and rotating her leg in an awkward direction. Now, given my line of work I’m not ignorant of the force of leverage, however, 3 screws, a metal rod, and 2 plates have convinced me to her flip flops through a wood chipper, and all from an awkward movement and sudden catch. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this, as it wasn’t a high speed accident and she has no history of bone issues in her family.

Would that mean that we shouldn’t drink these kinds of teas after lunch either? Or does a different rule apply due to differing levels of caffeine? Or does that not matter that much?

After all, manufacturers know that they're going to have people's butts on them a lot, and quite probably also spilled bodily fluids, so they're designed to be very smooth to prevent bacteria from getting a foothold on there and to be easy to clean.
