About the statues... they are just Onis. An Oni is a kind of demon, or ogre, of the japanese mythology, or they may be Kamis(gods). It's just a cultural reference, because the heart looks like a traditional japanese temple for the cells. I hope that you can understand what I meant to say, because I'm brazillian, and I had to learn english by myself, so, I still have some difficulties with the language... specially in terms of writing.

for the statues they are the Nio, are a pair of protectors who commonly stand guard outside the temple gate at Japanese Buddhist temples, one on either side of the entrance. The right statue is called Misshaku Kongōand has his mouth open, representing the vocalization of the first grapheme of Sanskrit Devanāgarī (अ) which is pronounced "a". The left statue is called Naraen Kongō and has his mouth closed, representing the vocalization of the last grapheme of Devanāgarī (ह [ɦ]) which is pronounced "ɦūṃ" (हूँ). These two characters together (a-hūṃ or a-un symbolize the birth and death of all things. So they represent in lay terms the deoxygenated blood cell are "dying" then they are "reborn" or become oxygenated blood cells

The gargoyle-like statues are likely a reference to Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa, which leads to Sensoji temple. The gate is flanked by statues of the thunder and wind gods. It fits with the temple like depiction of the heart. Though I suppose the thunder god could reference the electrical impulses of the heart, and the wind god could reference the breath oxygenating the blood.

Yeah definitely the same ones in Asakusa. They are also supposed to be guardians that separate what is impure from what is holy so it makes sense thematically that they stand between clean and impure blood.

I was going to make a similar comment but you summed it up better than I could have. I'll just add that the 'cramped passageway' that the Red Blood Cells go through on their de-oxygenated journey into the heart are called Torii Gates, and they are found outside of temples and shrines. Supposedly they form a sort of 'spiritual corridor' for people on a spiritual journey to said temple/shrine. Dunno why they chose to represent going through the heart as going through a shrine. It's . . . odd to say the least. I do like your idea that it has to deal with wind/Oxygen and Thunder/Electrical impulses.

Wait, did red blood cell _finally_ , legit, for once, navigate her way though the blood circulation system without losing her way? *Coagulations* !

This is a stretch, but this isn't strictly true. In fetuses, their arteries carry deoxygenated blood. I am sorry I have alevel bio exam in a few days and I cramming. Thought this was a good way to active learn. Apologies for being nit picky

They are because the area is modeled after the Kaminarimon (literally Thunder Gate), the outer gate of the Sensou-ji in Asakura. The gate is adorned with statues of Fuujin and Raijin, who spiritually separate what is impure from what is holy. In this imagery, they are separating the blood cells between dropping off and picking up.

To be honest, I thought the thunder deity represented the heart beat, cause when your heart beats, that means it's doing it's job right and blood is flowing properly throughout the body. Plus the guy is known for his drums, so I thought that was the connection. A deity to represent the air in the lungs and a deity to represent the beating of the heart.

Love this series! As a med student myself, there was one aspect in this episode that I was surprised that you did not comment on - namely, local differences in blood pressure! Like how the red blood cell is wandering aimlessly in the vena cava, but is getting a huge speed boost once inside the aorta.

If you really want to geek out, there is pressure differences within the aorta, starting from the valve face itself. Having done A&P myself, one of my textbooks (which is currently in storage ...), showed bp every 5cm from the valve face up the asending aorta through to the descending portion ... pretty cool diagram, although I often wondered how in the hell they produce results with that level of resolution ... strangly, I don't recall them doing that to the assending and descending vena cava, but then my memory ain't what it used to be ... [Edit:- forgot to add ... a dissecting aortic aneurysm is perhaps the most terrifying thing you may ever face if you are planning on surgical rather than medical. I once did six weeks in a haemotology lab/blood bank, and we had do a rapid type and cross match 10-12 units, minimum, whole blood, plus 3-4 units FFP, stat. Even though I was there as work experience, anyone not tied up with CBCs/FBCs or blood smears (depening on where you are ... here in the UK, we call them FBCs; US, CBCs, but they are the same thing ...), had to rush to help ... even dumpsky me ... talk about adrenaline dump ...

I'm sorry if this has already been pointed out somewhere. It is said in the video that the mitral valve was not described in the video, but I think the two gargoyles pointed out in the video are the description of the mitral valve. By the way, those gargoyles are properly called Niou statues. They are there to protect the temple from the bad guys. The mitral valve is known as the "僧帽弁" in Japan. The Chinese character for "僧" in 僧帽弁 to a monk in a temple. I think that scene probably depicts the mitral valve in the form of a Niou statue, hooked to the kanji that refers to monks in temples. ... It might be hard to convey this feeling unless you're Japanese or have lived in Japan before. Being Japanese, I didn't understand English, so I relied on translation sites for everything. I'm sorry if there are any oddities. I apologize for the long text.

Welcome back! Yeah I agree that by congestion I think they mean heavy traffic. Not much to add on the circulation episode, it's all quite chill, which is probably needed after the last one. The first pathogen you show, I suspect to be Shigella for a few reasons: 1) Rod-shaped and spiky, though that can also describe any of the Bacilli. 2) Pink face, suggesting gram negative. This rules out the Bacilli. 3) Haemolytic action as first attack. This narrows it down to species which are notably haemolytic, so we run the gram neg rod list: 3.1) Salmonella ferments for energy and mostly takes free nutrients, so no. 3.2) Vibrio (cholera) isn't noted for it, and we've already seen it in show. 3.3) Pseudomonas is haemolytic, but has already been seen in-show as the one-eyed bogie, so no. 3.4) Serratia tends more towards tissue destruction. Still on the table as it's an opportunist and our patient is a week post-cancer, but no. Most common in HIV patients, and our T cells and macrophages seem in full vigour! 3.5) Escherichia depends on strain and is a good candidate, but seems the kind of bug that they'd save for an episode. Maybe a special like the common cold. Escherichia is my second choice for this. 3.6) Klebsiella does look like this, with that thick white sugar capsule, but it's another fermenter which munches on the free glucose. I don't remember (though it's been a long time, I may be wrong) that KP has any notable haemolytic attacks, so no. 4) Having said all that, we seem to be going for a very Japanese flavour with this episode. The temple, the statues, et al. Shigella ticks all the boxes, is strongly haemolytic, and was discovered over a century ago in Japan by a famous Japanese doctor, Kiyoshi Shiga. I submit to you that the spiky bacterium is *Shigella sonnei* in particular. Thankfully Neutrophil got in there quick before the patient started peeing blood.

My life is a mess but feeling smart from learning new terms makes me happy, thanks for letting us watch that show for free.

There's a part where she and her other blood cells are walking through the inferior vena cava and above them is a large dark blue pipe. Very clever seeing as how veins are blue on the outside of the body, they made the pipes above the veins blue. It just goes to show you how much thought and detail they put into this anime.

I am a freshman student nurse and I couldn't be more proud that I understand all of this. Thank you so much for explaining some key points in the anime that I've failed to recognize. It really helped me especially during my term exams.

I'm in EMT school and my class had a brief glimpse at the circulatory system. Watching this episode after that lesson was like a complete nerd-out moment for me! I was able to point out the major parts of the heart and trace out the path of the oxygen-depleted blood, oxygen-rich blood, and so on!

My dad is a consultant at a training hospital in my city and also the dean of our university medical school. I showed him some clips of this anime because I really love it and he found it cute. He also seems to approve some of the medical info they share. So if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me to continue watching.

After watching these videos it's really cool to see how much the writers of this anime did their research even with the smallest and unnoticeable details like 1:08 and you manage to notice them and explain everything in a clear manner, i like the kind of reaction channels where i can leave with a medical degree pretty much.

It's the managaka doing that, this is adapting a comic. What was left to visual details only those in the know would notice in the anime were often explicitly called out in the manga, generally on a bonus page after a chapter. The uniform difference for example is overtly pointed out as a bonus page in the manga went over in greater detail the standard issue equipment of the Erythrocytes; one such note pointed out the jackets are reversible depending on whether or not they are carrying oxygen.

There's a manga called Cells at work Black It's in another body and shows smoking, drinking, etc. I remember it showing the macrophage in the liver degrading a eutrocyte

I honestly can't wait for the review of the last 2 episodes.

One thing I loved about this episode is how Red Blood Cell was so determined to circulate by herself, and how White Blood Cell helped her and defended her when Killer T was putting down her efforts. Neutrophil spoke very kindly about how she may have this weakness of getting lost, but she is an extremely hard worker and determined to do it right; and besides, doesn’t everyone have areas of weakness? And then, even though he already knew about RBC’s entire journey, he sat down and listened to _her_ tell it with a pleasant smile on his face. I know it’s not related to medicine specifically, but I just love that. As someone with ADHD, it can be tough when, like our favorite RBC, you struggle to complete tasks that everyone else just does effortlessly. The world needs more people like Neutrophil U-1146, who listen patiently and appreciate the efforts of everyone, and RBC AE-3803, who give it their all despite the challenges they face.

i presonally loved the detail of using a temple bell for the heartbeat itself, rather than reverberating the whole room

Not even one minute in, and Dr. Hope already blew my mind. When I watched the episode back when it released I didn’t even notice they switched the Jacket’s color depending on it’s oxygenation!

To be fair, it's been mentioned countless times in the comments of past videos and for what it's worth it's explicitly mentioned in a bonus page in the source manga.

I've been hoping that you would review this light-hearted but very educational episode which has helped many pass their tests on circulation. And as always great review, love the way you describe what is happening and the various details. Regarding the two statues, if memory serves me correct these are two of gods found in the taoist pantheon relating to the beginning and the end. Quite fitting given the role of the heart.

I must say, watching this again is making me feel really conscious of how I overwork my heart and cute little blood cells. Having a doctor explain the human body using an anime of the subject is a dream come true.

FIRST! This episode is one of my favorites! What I loved about this episode was how much White Blood Cell cared for Red. I was half expecting you to talk about some memories of doing rounds all on your own. The next episode will be interesting, giving insight on why Killer T cell needs to watch his salt intake.

Even though I know absolutely nothing about Cells at work I always enjoy your explanations of these medical terms it just brings a smile to my face every time I see a notification of yours. I learned something new in 1 minute in about the inferior and superior vein thing and that Deoxygenated. Im just so glad I found your channel I mean this just helps me out so much I can't thank you enough for all these videos. So once again Thank you Dr Hope.

It's been a long time coming! Btw, a second season had been announced for this series! Thank you so much for all your detailed explanations! It's still a long way, but there was like an extra episode (Episode 13, essentially) after Episode 12, talking about colds and I was very confused by that episode so looking forward to hearing your explanations on the upcoming episodes!! Thank you so much!

Glad you are picking this series back up! But sad to see that they have been claiming your videos. This must take more time editing since leaving any clip up too long could trigger KZreads' algorithm. Seeing your insight into the show and what you add with knowledge and wit really should be considered as transformative. Thank you for doing what you do, I really appreciate it, and by the looks of it so do many others.

11:31 they are the guardian deities found infront of shrines in japan and one reprisents intake and the other reprisents release or outtake

I'm japanese. The Gargoyle is 「阿吽像（AUN-zou）」. This mean is 「阿（A）＝born」「吽（UN）＝death」、set mean is 「the Life」. Because, in Heart scene is very near likeness,「浅草（Asakusa）」at「New Year's Eve pilgrimage（大晦日oomisoka）」. Bell, gate（鳥居tri-）, and congestion,very near！

It keeps amazing me how mechanical bodies are, with the pumps, valves, electrical signals, etc., yet so intricate we're nowhere near fully replicating it.

The heart is depected as a Shinto-Buddhist temple, and the statues are common guardian statues at temples in Japan. They're there to decorate the gateway back into the heart and denote the "temple" as a holy place.

It was really cool to see you explain all the process showed in this episode. This definitely worth the wait.

I love how your videos are always well explained. It shows that you're not reacting at it just for views (because of its popularity), but rather because you find it good and want to share interesting points with us (that only you could explain so well!!)👍 You've got a new subscriber~

About the heart and the statues, the heart itself is based on japanese shrines and temples (in Japan the two are slightly different, one word means budist and the other Shinto, a traditional japanese religion, but dont remember wich one). Japaneses are not really religious, but they have a strong tradition of going to a shrine / temple in January 1st and it always got HUGE amounts of people (imagine an entire city going to the same church at the same time, its crazy). That "somewhere where everyone goes in regular basis" and the drums / bells (representing heartbeats) makes that symbology really good, but hard to understand to non-japanese people. The two statues (and the big bell, and the Toriis in the scene where they're waiting in line) are traditional symbology of a shinto shrine/temple. That's not a medicine thing (except the bell and the drums, they are both religious symbolism and heartbeats).

If I had to take a quiz after watching an episode of Cells at Work, I'd ace it. What an incredibly genius way to teach! And I learn even more from Dr. Hope. 🙏🏻💕
