Back in 1990 , I was in highly awarded tv program

I saw BoJack's natural taking to therapy stemming from his deep-seated longing *for* such conversation, but always having his father's voice in the back of his head that would have called him a failure for needing therapy to begin with. It probably also speaks to the general stigma surrounding psychological therapy, *especially* for men.

Ending a therapy session with "don't forget to like and subscribe" would honestly make my day

Mr. Peanutbutter is such a dog and I love it. But what's interesting about him as a character is that his older brother (and maybe his parents) does his best to shield him from anything unpleasant in life. Which isn't always a good thing.

definitely. and as a result of his family shielding him, he can't admit that not everything is great all the time. mr pb is toxic positivity personified. and he assumes that he can never be in the wrong because he has good intentions, which ended up ruining all of his marriages imo (also am i the only one who's noticed that katerina and mr pb are the only ones who ever mention erica? and she only pops up when they need to get out of a conversation at a social event. i don't actually think she's a real person, just a made up one to avoid others)

"The most emotionally stunted character in television history is having epiphanies in 45 minutes?" I think it was you who said of Bojack, "insight does not equal change", and that kind of sums up his character. He's actually very insightful sometimes, it just doesn't help. So it's not too surprising that he has some minor epiphanies right in the middle of one long self-deception.

He and Sarah Lynn have that I common: “I’m at a place in my life where I never have to grow as a person or confront my problems. I can just surround myself with sycophants and yes men until I die tragically young. It’s pretty much too late for me.” The tragedies of these two characters is that they know what’s wrong and how to fix it, they’re just too complacent to actually do the work.

"Google filled in your last name for me" makes me crack up every time. Will Arnett delivered that line perfectly.

I think Bojack’s sudden “epiphany” makes sense when you look at the content of what he said. He was showing genuine understanding about some inane interaction with Jerry Lewis, but when it came to more serious topics he ran away. He’s avoiding heavy topics by delving deep into light ones.

One time I was talking to a new friend I met in the context of mental health treatment, and she was asking a bit about how I got there. I gave an example of something that had required medical attention and kind of led to where I was at present. My friend goes “oh my fucking god. My nurse friend literally told me this story about you.” Apparently my event was odd enough that someone wanted to tell someone about it, and it actually got back to me that they had.

Oh man that sucks. I hope you two were able to have a laugh about it, or at least it didn’t make things awkward between you two or make you feel bad 😞 Must have been a weird feeling to be getting to know somebody and suddenly realise they know more about you than they should have 🙈 Can’t imagine what I’d do in your position, tbh I’d probably have complained about the breach of privacy but then again I don’t like complaining if I know it could make that person lose their job or put them in a lot of trouble. They still shouldn’t have blabbed about you though. Thanks for sharing this story! Hope it doesn’t happen to you ever again! 😸

I'm not a therapist, but this perspective comes from being in therapy for as long as Diane was in the show. I think handing answers to clients on occasion can be helpful. The only time that my therapist handed me answers was when I was in deep deep denial. It took my therapist outright telling me for me to stop denying what happened. Once I accepted what had happened, I was able to start processing it.

IDK if it's too dark, but I would love to see an analysis of "The View From Halfway Down". As someone with major depressive disorder as well narcissistic personality disorder, I would love a professional's analysis of this episode. The whole series was eye opening for me, but TVFHD really put a lot into perspective for me. Maybe you've already covered it, or maybe because it's so late in the season it wouldn't make sense to cover it as an episode because you'd have to understand a lot about what's leading up to it. But that would be my dream ep for you to cover!

definitely agree that "Good Damage" should be the next Bojack episode you do. Love your interpretations, but I could never have you as my therapist, cause I think you're too damn cute.

I believe he’s a psychiatrist, not a therapist. But he could be both. The difference being: A psychiatrist diagnoses. A therapist treats the diagnosis.

@@GiveMeTheRice the title says he's a psychiatrist, but he talks a lot more about psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in his videos than most psychiatrists are known to do. So I suspect his approach is dynamic.

I’ve met quite a few of both as my mom is a behavioral health therapist and I’ve received therapy myself and I know some psychiatrists who partake in the psychoanalysis just as much as any therapist, they just have a different job. Sorry if I came off as corrective, my intent was more educational. “And I’d like to be judged solely off my intent this time!” -BoJack

@@GiveMeTheRice no it's fine and you are indeed correct. My grandfather was a psychoanalyst who didn't think very highly of psychiatry and saw them as prescription-sellers, (though he was an M.D. himself and could have written prescriptions if he wanted to), I think during his time, which was long ago, there were tensions between the disciplines. I think things are bit different now where most, no matter their specific job in mental health, are more dynamic in their approach.

As a psychologist, what bothered me the most was when Doctor Indira said to Diane “I think ‘Bobo’ needs me more”.

My grieving process lasted for months when my dog got stolen. I was angry heartbroken and blamed myself for it. I recall it lasting half a year and I would have nightmares about finding him beaten and emaciated. Even now when I think about it or someone mentions him it still affects me. Just wanted to mention this cause it’s about processing grief. Sorry for rambling on.

I love this episode! When I was seeing a counsellor (who did a great job of helping me work through the depression I had fallen into) I made her laugh by quoting my favourite bit of dialogue: "Do you need validation?" "NO! Your validation is worthless to me!" *slam* *door opens again* "...oh, you mean parking validation? Actually I would like that."

Dr. Carthy:”What is a healthy way to grieved?” Me*after reading The Song of Achilles*:”Probably not dragging the body of the man who murdered your lover behind your chariot for days. Or keeping said lover’s dead body in your tent.”

I don’t tell you how to live your life

I had a therapist in my mid teens who DID get defensive. I didn't even do anything. She just got defensive because I existed. She leans over and gets DIRECTLY in my face and says in a patronizing, condescending tone, "I understand you have Asperger's Syndrome..." (This was before they changed it to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)) I try to back away, she gets right back in my face. I move away again, she follows me, rinse and repeat. I never went back to her.

I would love to see you react to the Bojack episode “A Horse Walks into a Rehab”

This actually made me realize that there is a desperate lack of good therapists/counsellors in this show. The only two we see are Doctor Indira, who, well, judge for yourself, and Doctor Champ (the "therapy horse"), who is just a piece of shit and ends up unloading more on BoJack than helping him sort out (I mean sure, BoJack does gain something from it, but that still doesn't make Champ good...). It's a shame really, since this show is so heavily centered around mental health...

I mean, isn't that just another example of what makes the show so realistic? Good therapists are hard to find, just like any other doctor. Just because people have mental health problems doesn't mean they'll ever be able to get _help_ for those problems, the same as people who don't learn that they have cancer until they're dying from it. I'd much rather a show be honest and say "while therapy is a very good and helpful thing that shouldn't be stigmatized, the people who take your money for it don't necessarily have your best interests at heart" rather than lie and pretend that every therapist everywhere is amazing and will absolutely help you and fix whatever is wrong with you.

When my mom died, after a month or two of grief, my mind locked all my memories of her away for 7 years until I confronted it in therapy. It hasn’t been worked through fully but I basically didn’t even start grieving for real for like 7 years

Welcome back, Dr Carthy! A BoJack analysis is a great way to start. INT SUB has one of my fav final shots of any BH episode. wow, I loved this so very much. I really appreciated your thoughts on the therapist's work. And I can relate to the feeling that a once "safe space" can be threatened by another patient. I actually expereince sth.like that. I am in therapy in a multi-disciplinary setting. I usually see my psychiatrist, but there a pychologists, social workers etc. working in that kind of team-network too. My mother has BPD and my family was quite toxic. I still struggle with her most, partly due to finances (because she can't handle money well and will always ask me to give her more although I have low income too. She just knows how to "push my bottoms". Just for context). Anyway, of course I would worry too about her when out of money, and give more than I could/should. In order to help me by trying to help her in a specific situation, the team suggested one of the social workers could assist her once. So far so good. But when after that occasion my mother continued with even worse shenanigans and would ask to keep seing "my" social worker, said worker declined. Precisely to "protect" me. It would have been bad to treat both "parties",so to say. My mum was angry, did not seem to/want to undertsand this. The team even suggested some other places with social workers to treat her, even nearer at my mums home, but she did not want to hear of it. I for my part am really glad about the decision they made, because I would have felt very uncomfortable, like loosing "my" safe place one more to my mother meddling in (like so often), but would never ever have felt the right to say so by myself. After some time of "sulking" and acute need, my mother finally accepted social workers near her. (more or less, but not without complaining) Further, hearing you talk about what a good therapist should or shoul not do, I only get confirmed in my perception that mine is a good one. And I really do feel that the relationship is very important to him, just like keeping some boundaries in the sense of watching to stay "the therapist". And he clearly does not solve my problems. Rather he guides me in figuring out where they might come from and what strategies I could find to resolve them, helping me gaining the means to do so.

I genuinely love your videos. Have you considered covering Tuca and Bertie? It was really a surprise favorite of mine, and there’s a lot to talk about with anxiety, trauma, family dynamics, relationships…honestly there’s just a lot going on in that show.

"Is there a pathological way to grieve?" is such a great question. Appreciate your take on the issue.

Your reactions are always so insightful! This episode has a great B-Story, a dispute over a missing piece of string cheese between "Emperor Fingerface" (Todd) and "Tangled Fog of Pulsating Yearning in the Shape of a Woman" (Princess Carolyn). It gets into their friendship, as well as roommate issues, shared property, etc.

It's really interesting with explanations as to why people behave/act/say what they do, and sometimes be able to pin point it to a diagnosis. Hope the move goes ok!

Please react to This is Going to Hurt. Its an amazing show and it portrays the day to day problems of a doctor who suffers trauma from a missed diagnoses of pre-eclampsia that results in the mother and baby almost dying. Its based of the book This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay.

I see you've done a few episodes on Bojack, if you like it I think you should check out Moral Orel. Ill save you from watching the whole series and just leave some heavy episodes that deal with big stuff. Its basically like Bojack, but from the perspective of a child who's being abused and neglected. Each episode is only 10 minutes so you can watch them relatively quickly "Nature, part 1 & 2" These episodes have the dad (Clay) taking his kid (Orel) hunting and it turns very sour and dark. Lots of projection and trauma dumping on the dads part. "Passing" Shows the dads upbringing and sheds light on his childhood trauma "Sacrifice" Clay gets drunk at a bar and exhibits the behaviour he learnt as a child "Numb" Shows what Bloberta was doing at home during her husband/sons hunting trip. And my personal favourite (Because i relate to it the most out of every episode) "Dumb"; Where the child of a dementia ridden old man is being neglected. This episode has themes of absent and neglectful parents, trauma induced age regression and the fear of growing up to be like your parents. I hope you check it out :)

Fascinating video! I loved your insights and they made me self-reflect on my own experiences (and pauses) with therapy. Hope you have more videos planned for Bojack since season 5 and season 6 have so much to offer as reflections about mental health, addiction, and accountability.

Even though i think the Zebra interpretation of Bojack looked cool, at the same time it always made me think that if a Zebra in Bojack's world ever saw that they would probably be racially offended.

There was a background gag of a controversy regarding the Pegasus movie Vanessa Gecko/Rabinowitz did because they painted over the stripes of the hotshot zebra actor.

"Endeara" is actually a very fitting name for the setting. Hippies loved to give their children names based on things like emotions and flowers and colors and it's absolutely on point for someone (especially someone in the upper middle-class) living in California to have that sort of name.

2:07 to be fair, back when I did in person therapy my therapist had this arm chair and I sat on a couch across from her and a very big arm of me just wanted to do the cliché lay on the couch because it was really comfortable (also maybe because I hate eye contact)

I love how you said that during a session you should limit trying to fix your client/ patients problems for them and rather encourage problem solving... I was wondering if youd still apply the same therapeutic strategy on someone who is burnt out from always solving problems in their life or have a tendency to always put pressure on themselves to solve problems, both of their own and others.

Please can you react to This Is Going To Hurt? It seems like a brilliant insight into the NHS and there are many opportunities to discuss the mental health of both staff and patients - particularly trauma responses, anxiety, depression, stress, behaviour as an adult stemming from childhood family environments, and domestic abuse. Ambika Mod does a brilliant job of depicting a spiral into depression and how people often hide their issues from family and colleagues. Plus, I am a queer woman but seeing Ben Whishaw always makes my heart sing 🤣🥰

I'm curious about whether skipping stages impacts the process the therapist takes or the effectiveness of therapy to a patient; ie: skipped pre-contemplative, contemplative stages to action due to forced referral from general practitioner or hospital intake.

As a tangent, I’m recalling a Jim Jeffries skit, where he tells a story about a friend of his from childhood why had MS, and the friend asked him to anonymize the names in case the friend’s mom saw it. He didn’t. His reason was that the friend’s mom would be able to spot that Jim only had one friend with MS growing up. Obviously, he’s not a doctor, so it’s not really the same thing.

My moms a nurse and if she ever ever has a moment from a patient she needs to share with me, just to process and gain a non medical pov of, shell just go "oh i had a paicent and i found a cigarette tucked between his family jewels and thigh today. Someone smuggled it in for him and he said "aw rats" when i found it. Man what a shift." Like no info other than whats nessicary. Like no names, no ages, nothing. Just "person with external organs utilized it to hide contraband which i discovered". And i guarantee you this has happened at least once at every hospital in the world, so its not gonna get back to that person from literal years ago. Dont post it online the day of, folks, thats what gets you fired and lose your license. Keep it to yourself or say it verbally to a trusted loved one.

Something that really confuses me whenever your channel and videos come up in my recommended is that I could've SWORN there is also like a Priest and a Lawyer who look exactly like you who also do reaction videos. Am I tripping? If not I really wanna know what happens when you all walk into a bar together.
