Doctor explains WHOOPING COUGH plus examples of REAL SOUNDS | Symptoms, diagnosis, treatment & more!

In this video you hear real sounds of whooping cough (2 minutes 4 seconds) which is also known as pertussis. Doctor O'Donovan also explains causes, symptoms, treatment, and warning signs.
TIME STAMPS:
00:00 Introduction
00:48 What is Whooping cough?
01:17 Symptoms
02:14 SOUNDS OF WHOOPING COUGH
02:38 Diagnosis
03:58 Treatment
04:54 Warning signs
SYMPTOMS:
Once you become infected with whooping cough, it takes about seven to 10 days for signs and symptoms to appear, though it can sometimes take longer. They're usually mild at first and resemble those of a common cold:
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Red, watery eyes
- Fever
- Cough
After a week or two, signs and symptoms worsen. Thick mucus accumulates inside your airways, causing uncontrollable coughing. Severe and prolonged coughing attacks may:
- Provoke vomiting
- Result in a red or blue face
- Cause extreme fatigue
- End with a high-pitched "whoop" sound during the next breath of air
However, many people don't develop the characteristic whoop.
Sometimes, a persistent hacking cough is the only sign that an adolescent or adult has whooping cough.
Infants may not cough at all. Instead, they may struggle to breathe, or they may even temporarily stop breathing.
SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION IF:
- your child has periods of stopping breathing and their face or lips go blue (cyanosis)
- you or your child are finding it hard to breathe properly (shallow breathing)
- you or your child have chest pain that's worse when breathing or coughing - this could be a sign of pneumonia
- your child is having fits (seizures)

I found a record doing genealogy research that my great great great grandfather had a niece who died at the age of 7 from whooping cough in 1896. I found this video on KZread and listened to the child sound. Can’t imagine the suffering of the parents. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

I have whooping cough and it’s a nightmare. I wasn’t diagnosed until I’d had it for 4 weeks so the antibiotics did nothing to help. Steroids helped a little but the coughing attacks and choking /gasping for breath were terrible and really scary. Sitting up in bed at night helps a little but once you feel the cough coming on, there’s little you can do. My GP has reported it to PHE. I’m now in week 8, still getting a very sudden cough but not the choking. Cold air makes it worse so I’m being really careful here in the UK in March. I’ve sort of forgotten what it’s like to feel well to be honest. Very tired but just able to do a gentle dog walk now.

I had this at 13 into 14. It literally lasted most of the year. I recall getting what i thought was a cold with a cough in early March as it was just after my nan died end of Feb and that likely didn't help. It wasn't until June that this cough turned into the periodic coughing fits that caused choking and spluttering and sometimes vomiting. The whole experience was truly traumatising and just seeing footage of people having these attacks over 30 years later can set me off in tears. I quickly learned to sleep propped up into a sitting position as I was too terrified to lay down but it would still wake me several times each night. The stage with the coughing fits lasted about 2 weeks then it was just a gradual improvement from there. I recall in the summer holidays about August we were walking in the peak district and the physical exersion climbing hills was making it bad and some other hikers mentioned about it to my dad. The worst thing was that it was never diagnosed. I never had a coughing fit at the docs so he never got to see it. I got antibiotics and an inhaler as he was trying to guess but i knew it was not asthma. One of the halmarks is that your chest sounds clear when they listen to it with this cough. I recall having a coughing fit in the chemist when waiting for the prescriptions and a bunch of other people waiting for theirs were all looking at me in shock horror. I'd say it was back end of the year when I was having the final remnants of that dratted cough. We lost my grandad that November and I was also bullied and beaten up at school at the end of Oct so it was a pretty rubbish year for me.

I'm two months in and while still getting coughing fits the whooping part has just about finished. It was scary as it was hard to get a breath and there was a fear of inhaling mucous from the mouth. I had to sleep sitting up in bed a lot for the first few weeks and poor sleep meant fatigue in the day. Rang the GP's surgery early on but couldn't get an appointment. They offered a respiratory check due to shortness of breath but I'd have to travel to another city for it so I declined and like most other people who've got it just struggle on and wait for the '100 day cough' to work itself out.

I have it now. After I cough, I cannot breathe air in, I literally choke for half a minute. At the end, when air starts to come in slowly, it sounds like that. I also vomit. But I found that drinking water during choking part somehow relaxes and opens my airways.

I had a long bout of Whooping cough as a child on top of Bronchitis. Through the years my kids were in school and I worked, the bronchitis would return and when it was bad enough, that distinct cough would return as well; does this mean that the Pertussis can be contracted more than once?

you're not immune to whooping cough if you've had it before, although it tends to be less severe the second time around.

Pertussis seems to be misunderstood, at least when I look at this paper. Only 0.01-0.1% are symptomatic, and up to 10% of the population (netherlands) get infected. Ie almost nobody gets the cough from it, and there is no 'vaccine herd immunity'. Because for one, the childhood vaccine wears off after about 5 years. Given the super high asymptomatic cases, almost certainly the symptomatics are severely malnourished. No studies are done, other than they found most cases were someone having mutations in the vitamin D receptor. Association of Vitamin D Receptor Polymorphism with Susceptibility to Symptomatic Pertussis, 2016

My brother has this. He is like what you said at the 5th minute. We live in Croatia and we were in hospital with him 5 times and all they say is they don't know how to help anymore. We are very scared especially since he is a child with special needs and can't speak to us reasonably. He can't even swallow water.

Thank you so much for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment. Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances, and it would be unethical of me to do so otherwise. I have included the general resources I used to make this video in the description box but I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. This is the safest and most ethical advice I can give since this is just intended as a general educational resource. Thanks for understanding.

@@DoctorODonovanI just read that you don't give medical advice, but here you are saying vaccines are important. Ofcourse you can have this medical opinion but be careful because to be vaccinated or not, is something you should only discus with your own doktor who knows your medical record.

@@ivodepivo21advice to vaccinate is not classed as 'medical advice' it's a common sense public health and safety programme. It's like advising not to jump off a bridge as it's bad for your health or wear a seatbelt in case you have a car accident. Asthma is no longer a contraindication for childhood vaccinations. But for specific case-by-case advice, you would need to talk to your own doctor.

Hi, 30 november, 2023, I strongly do believe this is spreaading in San diego Trolleys, there are lots of homelss coughing bad, many sleep in trolleys, To keep warm, I dont blame them. San diego USA,and Tijuana mexico , share a border, millions crosss daily back and fort. I used the trolley taht week returne here to mexico oct 17, 2023 , with some bad cold, but it develop next day. or maximun 3 days prior I used trolley earlier. in less then 5 days catched an odd flu like cold, then the couging turn badly for weeks , I stayed home 20-25 days, when I went to see doctor, I was told What I had was an acute FAringitis, but the sounds were like the ones here on this video. Doctor check my lungs, NO bronquitis all clear. I told her before, exhaling was in phases, I got tire just talking, so I stop talking, I slowly then exhale, to relax the muscle, sleep sittting down , with lots of pillows. Also the wind felt cold always, I kept covered.

Vaccine is not the cure. It's the prevention. That's why most doctors recommend it to healthy people. Dr is telling you "ma'am, you don't want whooping cough, trust me". A healthy body can bear the consequences of a vaccine. People who have week immune system already from birth are the rare people who will actually fall more ill if they get vaccinated. So... Yeah. Healthy people should get their immune system even stronger (get immunized), so they don't create an outbreak that will take lives from both healthy and immunocompromised people. Hope this makes sense.
