Doctor explains KERATOSIS PILARIS (aka chicken skin) | Causes, treatments and AT HOME MANAGEMENT

In this video, Dr. O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about Keratosis Pilaris (KP), sometimes called "chicken skin" which is the condition where people have red bumps on the backs of arms.
Keratosis pilaris is a harmless skin condition that causes dry, rough patches and tiny bumps, often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks or buttocks. The bumps usually don't hurt or itch.
Keratosis pilaris is often considered a common variant of skin. It can't be cured or prevented. But you can treat it with moisturizers and prescription creams to help improve how the skin looks. The condition usually disappears by age 30.
Things to try at home:
1. moisturise your skin - ask a pharmacist what's most suitable for you
2. use mild and unperfumed soaps and bathing products
3. gently scrub your skin with a washcloth or exfoliating mitt
4. have cool or lukewarm showers and baths
5. pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it after washing

I just need this fixed I can’t wear long sleeve shirts anymore and I have religiously picked my arms since I was a child and they are scarred. This has such a serious mental effect on me I’m tired of people not giving this more attention.

by the way. Removing the hair removes KP, completely 100% no more bump, no more red dot. I have heart disease and have lost all the hair on my lower legs where i had KP. The KP is completely gone anywhere i have lost hair on my body.

I am in the US and have had this for as long as I can remember and I am 26 now. I haven’t found anything that completely clears it. It definitely made me self conscious a lot as a teenager, not so much now. I wished there was a way to completely clear it.

Try a healthy nutrition (lots and lots of vegetables). But not just for a few months. Reflect everything you usually eat and if it's healthy or not or if it's uneccessarily rich in calories. Also sports or cardio may help. If your're a lazy person, get a trim bike for home (they're relatively cheap) so you can access it easily within minutes without the hassle of going out. That's what helped me, mainly the change in nutrition/diet. Start small/slow though and improve bit by bit because changing something from 1 day to another will most likely fail. The good thing is, there is nothing to lose with that. If you've done that for 1 year at least and nothing has changed you can still try out some of the lotions. Personally I don't use any lotions or cremes. Just normal shower with water after every daily workout/cardio session.

@@GermanKickboxerI’m British so veggies are in my diet a lot and I have this condition bro you can’t fix it unless you buy steroid cream which helps clear it up but it isn’t a permanent fix it will come back and need treating again so most can’t afford to treat it

I have found that staying away from wheat, store bought milk, and sugar help diminish or eliminate kp. I think this could be due to the inflammatory nature of those foods.

I developed KP about 12 years ago. I tried many things for it with no results. It even became more widespread. I started the carnivore diet seven months ago and my KP is probably 90% gone now. It has been steadily improving the entire time I've been eating this way. At this rate, I'm sure it will have completely resolved by the one year mark.

Funny how it's referred to as harmless. I guess mental health doesn't matter in the medical industry. Try being 53 and having it severely since age 14. See how your life runs it's course under those circumstances....

Sorry to disappoint you. I had been told the same from my childhood. And now I am 35 and still have same. The only thing that changed is my confidence level and accepting myself. This condition cannot be cured. I had also checked with multiple skin specialists. One doctor suggested me to go for laser treatment but it may result in patches sometimes. So better than doing such treatment, accept this and move on. I hope it helps for you, you are not alone in this 😊
