Docking Lamb Tails: Truths & Falsehoods

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In today's sheep farming vlog at Ewetopia Farms, we delve into the topic of docking lamb tails. We explain our approach, which involves keeping the tails short enough to cover their private parts, rather than leaving them naturally long or completely docking them off. Throughout the video, we explore different tail docking methods used around the world, providing an unbiased opinion on their factual basis, aesthetic reasons, and overall validity. You'll get an inside look at how we dock our lambs' tails and witness the natural process of the tail-ends dropping off as the lambs age, resulting in what we affectionately call "bunny" tails.
To kick off the video, we provide updates on the latest additions to our flock - a pair of Dorset lambs. Additionally, we share the progress of our orphan ram lamb and discuss the precautions we've taken to ensure the younger lambs stay warm during an upcoming cold spell. And of course, no lambing season day is complete without the joy of watching the "lamb races," which not only entertain us but also allow us to assess the lambs' vitality and growth rates.
Join us in this informative and engaging video as we shed light on the fascinating world of tail docking and share the latest happenings at Ewetopia Farms. #SheepFarming #TailDockingExplained #LambingSeasonUpdates

Awe …. Little Mister is lonely and wants a bottle. Poor Mister being abandoned. I know what it’s like to be abandoned as a child. If only I lived closer, I’d come over and hold him, and play with him, and feed his bottle, snuggle him and let him nap. Then we’d watch Ewetopia KZread’s together 😉 I love your teaching lesson, even if you’re repeating. Why? Because I still get a better understanding on the why, how , etc. no matter how many times I hear the lessons. Thank you. 😊 Great job running, lambs. You saved Arnie a little time while you laid out the straw. Pregnant ewes are so beautiful.

I fully understand and appreciate why you try to keep bottle babies to a minimum. I nostalgically see them as my very first barn chore as a small kid. We had quite a few triplets. Makes me smile to see them in your videos. Funny side note- the occasional ewe that would stomp her foot at me was so offensive to me. The child me didn't know not to take it personally and I sometimes would cry that they were so unappreciative. 😆

Thanks for sharing Lynn. Docking tails has been common here for many, many years. I can remember as a kid seeing pictures from when my grandparents were young, their pet lamb had a long tail and I had no idea the tail had to be docked. I guess I thought they were born with a bunny tail.😂 I noticed on the radar last night that your area was getting some precipitation, hope it wasn't freezing rain!! Stay safe!!🙏❤

More lovely Dorset twins! Had to laugh at the little guy she was cleaning, how instinctive the sucking reflex is as it tried to nurse on mom’s wool. 1:43 😁 Little Mister certainly let’s you know he’s hungry! Such a wee cutie. He and Maisie are going to be quite the pair in the big pen. 💛 I never get tired of hearing about the tail docking, Lynn. There’s always another tidbit to learn. 😊 I could almost smell the straw dust when the lambs were racing through it! The technique of squeezing the rams in close together so they can't get a running start and really hurt each other is fascinating! I don't know how many people I've told about that. When you first said it I thought I had heard wrong, but it sure makes sense after I thought about it for a while! I wonder if there is a human corollary that could work with people who are enemies?? Question: on the sweaters the store bought ones don't hold up I guess, I'm not a knitter but sure will try. When you shear what happens to your wool. I do dryer balls and give then away. Our wool we send to Woolgrowers where it is sold. They ship most of it overseas. People who live near us are welcome to come help during shearing and take some raw wool. The store bought jackets we buy are made of felt so they can't be washed and reused.

Lynn, please tell Arnie to stop calling that lamb an orphan. He's not an orphan! His mother is very much alive! He's just... twice rejected. 😀 The obsession with showring success has created its share of problems. But here's a funny story. Back in the 80s, I believe, there was a Corriedale breeder in Michigan, Kenny Bortel, who decided to start washing the legs of the sheep he took to shows and sales. And I have to say, it was pretty striking to see his sheep standing in the showring or on the sale block with these white, clean, fluffy legs. Of course, people complained about it bitterly because, they said, he was destroying the leg wool. Which of course was hogwash because leg wool on a Corriedale or any other wool breed is downright useless. The staple isn't long enough, and leg wool is about 75% dirt, feces, and urine. What they were REALLY complaining about was the degree to which washing legs--and getting them as clean as Kenny did--involved significantly more work getting a sheep ready to show. But before long, more people started doing it. And within about 5 years after Kenny showed up with his Corriedales' legs washed at one show, all of the Corriedale breeders were doing it. And by that time, breeders of other wool sheep were doing it, too. I HATED washing legs when I showed Corriedales. Absolutely HATED it. Thanks, Kenny.

When a mom rejects a lamb, she hits it which is physically and mentally draining on the lamb, that's why we kept him next to them initially. For the last few days, he is in the family pen with his mom and siblings plus lots of other lambs. He was only kept separate for his own protection and to make sure he was taking a bottle well before releasing him.
