Beautiful! A museum piece. It’s so great that Billy Strings and a whole new fine set of young pickers are keeping this tradition alive! It’s also great that thanks to KZread, we can all stroll through the museum any time we choose and see our heroes, Live and Pickin’!
Have been very fortunate in my life to have seen all these great pickers at one time or another w/e of "Deacon" Dan Crary. Doc and Jack multiple times (Jack was his accompaniment for many years) and even got to see and hear Doc's son Merle back in '73 who was also an excellent flat picker. I've been truly blessed.
Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Dan Crary, Steve Kaufman and Jack Lawrence if Norman Blake was there picking as well I would have thought I died and gone to heaven and we were all just hanging around waiting for Clarence to show us around great pickers great post thanks Paul
Five guitarists together should be chaotic, but they sound like a cool clear mountain stream. I think respect for the Master must be a part of it.

Yes, many jams I've attended end up sounding link a giant out of tune auto harp.
Man this is just so good. The solos on Blue Ridge Mountain Blues are just incredible. I especially love how much respect Doc has for Tony Rice and how much he loves to hear him play. Good stuff.
RIP Mr. Watson and Mr. Rice.
There are 5 flattop pickers here, yet if you listen carefully, each has their own distinct style! Amazing.....This is the best guitar pickin on KZread.
Fantastic! Never dreamed that these 5 gentlemen picked together. No crowding, hogging the mic, nothing but incredible picking. Especially rewarding is listening to Doc when really pushed by his peers; he hits some licks on unfamiliar tunes that shows what a master of the instrument he really was. Nothing here bur superlative music from everyone.
Peace, love and Harmony abound in this smile creation.
The way that they could ace something that unrehearsed is amazing

It’s because there is no ego up on the stage. They aren’t trying to out do each other. They all respect each other’s talents and how they are all just there to play for the sheer joy of it. It’s a quality that you only see in the bluegrass/folk community. I use the word community instead of genre, because that’s what they are is a community of like minded people. This could be someone’s front porch and they wouldn’t care, it’d sound the same.
"I appreciate them good warm lights - turn em up a little hotter. That feels pretty good. It may blind Jack, and Tony, and Dan, and Steve, but it won't bother me a bit." -Doc
THIS IS PURE GOLD!!!!
Absolutely fantastic what a great heap of talent on stage at the same time
We are headin tomorrow for our 10th Merlefest in a row. So many good memories from Merlefest. Thanks for the great video. Tim from Greenville Ohio
Doc the godfather and Tony the stone cold killer. What legends.

I don't care who you are...you gotta love this! Thanks for putting this out there..awesome!!
After watching this vid over and over I am really impressed by Steve Kaufman playing. he may be the lesser of the guitar giants, but he surely holds his own. with Doc and the gang. This is sure an awesome flatop pickin tune never before duplicated!

He’s definitely in good company upstairs, that’s for sure. I can’t imagine what it was like the first time he was able to see his sons face. I don’t even know the guy and that chokes me up. He spent his time down here playing and spreading the word of god. Now he just gets to play all day and night if he wants.
Legends
When Steve says "is E all right with you guys," I can imagine Doc saying " No, F flat would be better".
Folks, I canot gt enuf of this amazing guitar pickin'...superber cannot describe this
Chapeau!
4 grands guitaristes de bluegrass réunis,j'adore!!
Brilliant. Flat top picking great player/artists and hes 100% correct in what he says bet you dont get this in modern music ? I wonder why ! Manufactured !!!!
You will have to listen for another 100 years to hear flatop pickin as this. Genuine as it gets. mos60
Flatpickers from this era are really just built different.
Kinda like a 70 yard touchdown pass, they make it look it so easy.
Just sitting around the living room :-)
@iceaxe56 Agreed !!!
That tony rice guy is aaight dammmmm
Wonderful picking. The pickups give a hollow buzzy sound though. The warmth of the strings is missing.
is it ok to play electric to this?
Steve is the stud for both songs. I love doc but Steve stole this part of the show. Overall, this is at good as it will ever get!
one more swing now
Another accidental find. Filled my underpants again!!
gordon bennett that is tremendous
