Suggestion: Dredd. The Karl Urban one. It's well known now as a great movie and cult film, but it was widely ignored on release and was considered a failure until it hit the home market, where it turned into a word of mouth juggernaut. Even now, the oddity of that films life has created a constant battle for a new one, as its failure in theaters but success at home seem to make it difficult for studios to figure out if they want to follow it up or not.

I unironically genuinely enjoy the DOA movie. It's a fun and silly action comedy with loose adaptations of DOA characters. I was working at Blockbuster when this came out and it was a frequent employee free rental for me. Just wanted to add, Matt, the Wikipedia entry for this at one point had a link to an interview with Jamie Pressly where she mentioned besides Corey Yuen and his crew not speaking English, Mr. Yuen also fired and replaced said crew twice, so they were constantly filming with new people.

I learned a few things about this movie shortly before it came out. 1: They actually offered the role of Bass to Hulk Hogan. He declined as he was recovering from knee replacement surgery at the time. He put in a good word about Kevin Nash, and the rest is history. 2: There was a Ninja Gaiden spin-off movie in the planning stages staring Kane Kosugi, returning to play Ryu Hayabusa. That didn't go far obviously as the DOA movie ruined that from happening.

@@charlesc.fuentes1033More than likely a piece of the mish mash of concepts. Marie is made up from a bunch of concepts in the series. Concept art of Elliot being a blonde haired blue eyed young girl with short pigtails exists for doa 4 before they more than likely gender bent him to give the game a male rep after Lisa was already planned to be in alongside the nearly completely conceptualised kokoro. There are also concepts of a big boobed twin drill haired gothic Lolita girl in the same style of art as the 4 concept art. Doa 5’s concept art and 4’s look majorly different imo and considering in 4 there was both a Hitomi costume and online avatar costumes of Lolita outfits one can only assume the Lolita was thought about to as early as 2005 if earlier. Take into account Violets conception for the movie around the early to mid 2000’s when the script was being thought of it’s more than likely Marie is made by Itagaki just broken down into a bunch of unseen concepts that never saw the light of day while he was making doa games. Glad to see they made their way into the series eventually into one solid character more or less. So yeah Marie definitely a fully realised gender bent elliot concept, Lolita character concept and this 14 year french flower named school girl concept mashed together.

@@MidlifeCrisisJoe Yes. I left a reply here with links to two articles, but I suspect KZread deleted my reply thinking it was spam. Getting back on topic, yes, there is a live action adaptation of the Game series in development right now. Recently, it's been acquired by Lionsgate. So far, no director has been announced yet, only the script writer. Would be nice if Robin could be the film's Martial Arts Choreographer, as he seems past his prime to play as the Living Weapon Shiva (Ironically both him and Shiva have multiple things in common: Robin Shou was a Kempo champion in his mid 20s. Shiva is described in the fourth game as using Kempo as his fighting style. Both men are estimated to be 6 ft tall, were Bodyguards, and participate in activities at their local Chinatown. Weird huh?) Still, one can dream about it. However, I feel uneasy with him directing the film. He's not a bad Film Director. It's just that something tells me he'd call Paul W. S. I directed the Monster Hunter film Anderson to direct the film instead (They've been good friends since Mortal Kombat 95). Little worried about how SEGA would feel about this decision. I want to see Blaze, Adam, and Axel as the main characters. Not some OC played by Anderson's wife. 🙄

A year late but funny enough I think you’re right or the idea of a young blue eyed blonde haired girl AND a separate concept for a big boobed twins drill gothic Lolita fighter were seen in doa 4 concept art alongside the concepts for Kokoro. It seems to me Marie Rose was conceptualised in a broken many concepts and only came together thanks to sheer luck of Elliot being turned into a young boy student of Gen Fu instead of a girl thanks to their being no male rep conceptualised AT ALL for 4 yet and they already had Lisa and Kokoro almost fully realised atp. She’s basically the early gender bent elliot concept, doa movie 14 year old French violet and the gothic Lolita concept character combined into one character. If anything Marie is like a breathing lost concept of itagaki’s realised after his departure from the series ( maybe not in the way he imagined but still she exists) lol. Someone needs to ask Itagaki of what he’s thought of Marie Rose as a character all these years to prove the theory.

Replaying Dimensions a few months ago, I got to think about this movie and came to a realization: a DOA movie could have worked I think what should be done to make a successful movie reboot would be to: 1) Just focus on DOA 1. It has the most straightforward plot, and the smallest cast of characters to flesh out. Hayate would have to appear, and maybe Bass and Helena could have cameos, but just leave it at that 2) Make Kasumi the only protagonist and keep the others as her supporting cast. Her plot in DOA 1 is really good: she seeks revenge against the man who crippled her brother, and thus ran away and became a traitor to her clan. Focus on her reputation as a kind girl who dislikes fighting who has to gather the guts to not even fight, but kill. 3) The other fighters could not only just be there as support (Tina and Leifang could befriend her, she could empathize with Gen Fu, try to warm up to Zack, form a respectful bond with Jann Lee and train with Hayabusa), but they could teach her their fighting styles so she is ready for Raidou (who mimics the moves of other characters). 4) Keep her relationship with Ayane as one of the central plot points. Those two could make for great drama With these four points, along with good actors and good choreography, I think we could get a DOA movie that is, at most, decent. (Yes, I have a lot of free time to think this stuff)

The problem with fighting game adaptations is that there's too many characters to have weight on the main story but also don't feel like a 2 second cameo for fanservice purposes. It's either gonna be the latter, with them trying to cram as many characters as possible, or someone will have to be left out which will sour that part of the audience that is a fan of that particular character.

@@charlesc.fuentes1033 I wouldn't say that would be the way to do it. I am not sure many people would be interested on a solo Zack or Tina movie. But a prequel could work for Ninja Gaiden. Set two movies before DOA adapting the first modern games (with maybe Dragon Sword as a short animated series) and that could work to establish Ryu and Ayane, or even Hayate and Kasumi with some changes. But the rest of the DOA cast would need to be introduced in the DOA movie proper

Had no idea this was directed by Corey Yuen. He worked closely with Jet Li on most of his films, and the particular style has a lot on common with some of Hong Kong's goofier comedy action films. Speaking of, Matt should take a look at Future Cops, the unofficial Street Fighter movie from Hong Kong that uses the likenesses but none of the names or plot of the games, I would love to know the story behind how that got made.

NGL, I really love this movie. The glasses are stupid, but overall it's kinda faithful to the mismatch of themes from the game and OTT, tongue in cheek cheesiness, of the games. It captures the spirit well, and I like the casting. Especially Holly Valance and Jamie Presley. In a perfect world we'd have gotten a sequel where Zack invites Tina, Christie, Helena and Kasumi to his island and then Donavan shows up looking like Two-Face from Batman with some Saturday morning cartoon plot to get back at them for stopping him in the first film.

Corey Yuen is a former classmate of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, & Yuen Wah. He directed many of Jet Li's mid-90s movies like Fong Sai-yuk (aka The Legend) 1 & 2. Choreographed the fight sequences in the likes of Lethal Weapon 4 & X-Men. DOA is still currently his last directed film. I guess he lost taste for it afterwards. Hong Kong productions especially back then were used to living cheap just to get the movies done on schedule. Sometimes even sleeping on the set to maximize work. Something that most western actors are definitely not accustomed to. And knowing western studios, most of the filming wouldn't have been dedicated to the action scenes.

I honestly think the story told in the first 4 Dead or Alive games isn't bad at all (5 and 6 stories suck though), I'd say is one of the most interesting for fighting games of the time, especially when it comes to the backstory of Kasumi and Ayane and something kind of decent could have been done with that. It's just easy to miss that because they are not told very well and are just spread on the arcade modes of some characters unfortunately.

The main problem lies on having absolutely no marketing for it, leaving it shelved for years, which allows it to be leaked online, then barely releasing it in the US. You get people that are going to say its bad, who never seen it and just want to go with the flow of hating video game movie, and DOA in general. Then you get DOA fans who whine about everything, and can't accept a garbage video game story is difficult to adapt into a film.
