I think one thing that makes it really difficult is that when trying to find techniques and looks that are flattering for eye shapes that don't fit the trends, is that when searching for "hooded eyes", or "downturned eyes", or "deep set eyes", etc, there are VASTLY more videos on camouflaging/hiding/fixing these issues instead of celebrating/enhancing/highlighting them.

Yeah! I get so annoyed when (basically good) tips are introduced with "how to make hooded eyes not look hooded and therefor prettier". 😵‍💫 And you know, why do we always have to do our makeup so that we look "happier", "more awake" and "friendly" etc? What if I sometimes want to be okay with my sad and droopy eyes and just run with it??! 😍

I have a droopy and hooded eye shape and seeing this video made me happy because I tell people this all the time! For anyone that struggles with eyeshadow on hooded eyes, I say don't be afraid to get heavy underneath your eye! A shimmer/glitter on the inner part and a dark lower lash line is my go-to. Sometimes I even put shimmer all over my eyebags to draw attention to them but that's not for everyone because it is quite dramatic haha

As a very olive-skinned EAsian person with monolid eyes - NO visible crease when my eyes are open - and an epicanthal fold - man I wish I'd seen this early on when I was getting into makeup. It's so hard not to get discouraged when nothing you see seems to work for you. I live in the US and my adoptive family is all white, so trying to figure out what I'm doing at any given time has taken a *while*. This look is gorgeous, btw, it reminds me of moth wings and it highlighted the colors in your eyes in the coolest way

  • @Call-me-Al

A really fun thing to do when you have a huge chunk of invisible space when your eyes are wide open, is to have some bright and fun color in the hidden space. That way every time you blink it gives a really cool color flash. There was some monolid redditor/instagrammer I learned this "trick" from. I don't have a monolid, just a lot of disappearing space, and seeing that was the first time I ever finally got to see the hidden space as an opportunity instead of a waste

Hey hey, monolids here and omg I feel your struggle. I never wore makeup all through my teen years because there were NO resources. Google the "vertical gradient" for monolids. It was totally game changing for me. I've been using variations on vertical gradients ever since. Attempting to put a darker shadow through where our "crease" aka orbital bone is just looks so bad 90% of the time.

  • @ruelongcha

even in asian beauty especially during the early days of youtube there was little if any monolid representation (funny as I’m typing this, apple doesn’t even recognize monolid as a word). thankfully there are now dozens of video tutorials for monolid eyes. I’ve also seen some beautiful high fashion style makeup with bold stenciling around your eye shape. it works really well because with no crease it’s almost like a “blank canvas” effect that you can get away with drawing the most creative shapes on. I’ve never actually seen the style done in person (I have hooded eyes so it wouldn’t really work on me) but I think it would look so cool

I have the same issue and have learned a few techniques. Alex mentioned this - you need to follow along with your eye socket to create your “crease.”. You can feel this bone if you lightly press above your eye. This is where you apply your “crease” color. It will create depth in that area. Putting a light bright color in the middle of your lid (above your Iris) also helps. I usually use gold with warm shadows or silver with cool shadows. Using no shadow or liner at all under the eyes may sound counterintuitive but this also makes a big difference in making hooded eyes look less “sleepy.” I don’t even wear mascara on my lower lashes anymore.

Yess, I felt the pixie hairstyle choice. I used to swear I'd never cut my hair that short bc I thought it'd look awful. But then the pandemic hit and I was like "if there's a time to do it, it's now" so I chopped off my hair and I haven't looked back since. Of course I still see people with longer hair and it looks so good on them but I know my hair could never be like that naturally and I have to accept that. I am, however, much happier with my pixie since it looks better with my face shape (plus it's way easier to manage)

As someone with droopy sad puppy eyes, thank you for the positivity lol! When I first started getting into makeup I found it so frustrating to try to follow the “standard” tutorials for like a cat eye because my eyes are simply Not Built Like That, so it took me just practicing and experimenting on my own to figure out what worked. And also, sometimes embracing the weirder parts of your face with makeup can be really fun! I’ve got close set eyes, and I used to do everything to lighten up my inner corners to make them seems further apart, but recently I’ve been darkening my inner corners and it’s been great! Like, yes, I am built like a flounder, but fuck it, why can’t I put a dark shimmer on my inner corner!

@@eyeclipper Hah, it's such a rare face shape, of course I'll share (and be super extra in my description) in the hopes that it might be helpful :) So I've struggled a lot over the years and have landed on: minimal overall foundation to at least make sure that the parts I don't conceal don't stand out as having a different texture. Then the best thing I can do around my eyes is to really not over-conceal the eyelids and area below my brows. I have to make sure the shadows are still visible, because if I don't, it flattens my face and makes it longer and incredibly weird.. I'll typically do a light coverage foundation there (dabbed first on my hand with a sponge) and then, if anything, a thin liner towards the outer corners straight out toward the temple, not upward. I realize that's hard to explain in words, but I find that with my face shape, lines moving horizontally are the most flattering. The upward cat eye look tends to look absolutely insane hah.. Then maybe a bit of a highlight shade on the inner-center lid (not in that part at the very inner corner of the eye.... that looks horrendous hah) and I'm all set! Oh and any added lashes look great towards the outer corner. Whole sets don't usually look good, so I do the individual sets. Hope that helps! :)

@@brooke9297 Yes, thank you so much! I actually dont do outer lashes only (as if i did lashes at all most of the time but lets ignore that hahah) bc i feel like it weighs the last past only, even if i liked the look on other people 😭. I am curious, what do you think of the 'douyin' style makeup, where they make the liner kinda enhance the downwardness of the eyes? I tried it recently and it made had the opposite effect of the foxy eye, and it put more focus on the outer parts of my face (mostly cheekbones) and in a way makes it look less long?? + the make up isnt really on the eyelids so it doesnt create weird lines. But at the same time you have to really embrace the eye shape 😬

Thank you SO MUCH for addressing this. The whole trend issue. I’ve recently fallen into it myself and started to pressure myself to figure out how to finally do the perfect winged liner. But then I was like…why? My eyes look better with classic liner and it looks more youthful I realized. I’m so glad you brought this up because everyone is trying to do this triangle shape eyeshadow and not all eye shapes are designed that way 🤷🏻‍♀️

this is something ive been thinking about a lot, especially since the trends have moved so decidedly towards this super lifted aesthetic. i also have a sort of "droopy" downturned eye, and my eyes are very wide and round, so no matter what i do the whole fox eye trend is never going to look normal on me. recently I've embraced a very subtle, straight across eyeliner and rounded, diffused eyeshadow shapes that accentuate the roundness and downturn of my eyes and i LOVE it. it goes against everything the trends tell you to do but it just works so well for me

In all my years of being a makeup and skincare junkie, you're the only 1 I've heard mention 2 different eye shapes. I have a hooded lid & a lid with space. It can be terribly frustrating so I wish an artist would do a series of looks on uneven eyes 💬

I love this video. My intro includes me stressing the importance of embracing natural features, not changing them. Wear what we want to and rock it with confidence, regardless of what the 'beauty community' may say. Not reaching for perfection, but instead acknowledging our natural features are what makes us perfect. It was refreshing hearing your message in this video. I wish more people gave this message.

  • @amberr6

Exactly! Doesn’t matter that it’s trending if it doesn’t suit you. Makeup can be fun and creative, editorial even!, but I think the #1 is to have fun, and feel your best by accentuating your OWN best features. I really love your tutorials. Especially the in depth ones are some of the best of that long format. Thanks Alex! ❤

Ah I didn't even know i needed this validation as a down-turned eye gal. Have often been frustrated by certain eye liner looks that seem extra hard to do on my eye shape and I never really thought about why. And I LOVE a heavy lower lash line and never understood why it's a no-no for a lot of people. This explains a lot haha.

Hahaha you have my attention throughout this video, but when you called out for Putin I lost it 🤣 🤣 🤣 omg Awww thanks so much Alex! This WAS refreshing watching you just play and talk! I’ll definitely be bolder with my lower lash line! You hit the nail on the head when you said not to be scared to drag it downwards, I’m half Korean so I’ve always grew up with this idea of makeup being lifted and light and sweet and going dark is dark waters! But I love boldness and color! The majority of my hang up about putting on makeup on myself is I don’t really know who I look like and I think I’ve done a lot of that “look at others and copy” that I’m not familiar with my own features as much but I think life is bringing us back to ourselves now and it’s an awesome and best time to experiment with that stuff! That’s again for a cool post :) take care Alex!

Yesss! Understanding your unique bone structure, real estate, what’s reasonable, and what you’re working to achieve are instrumental in understanding what techniques will flatter you most. There are techniques that’ll enhance every eye shape, so play! As for the hoodies who are looking to do cut creases, bring that contour a few millimeters above your natural socket (where your eyeball meets your brow bone, not where your hood creases). This’ll help make the look more believable as well as guide your other eye looks! Every eye shape is beautiful and able to be enhanced through different techniques. While not all work for everyone, there are plenty that will!

When you started talking about “droopy” eyes I almost started crying because I felt seen. My mom has very deep hoods and her outside corners are downturned and she passed the same eye shape to me. In fact, our hoods embrace the droop and fold completely past the outer corner. It took me finding Wayne Goss’s channel before I ever had any clue how to make my eyeshadow look “good” on me. It took me even longer to get over my insecurities about my sunken, blue lower lids and realize I could use them to my advantage too. Now I get compliments all the time and do my mom’s eyes for her on special occasions so she too can see the magic and power in what others consider an “unfortunate” eye shape. And I’m grateful for you helping spread the message of love and beauty and acceptance for all shapes and types.

Really love your videos. Hard to find creators like you still around. I love the artistry and technique that you use in makeup. Def appreciated this video and taking about being realistic with your anatomy and what looks best on someone else may not work for you. I used to do a lot of freelance and actually started hating it bc people wanted the ridiculous, heavy makeup and eyes and when I would suggest that it may not lol the same on them, they would insist I do it anyway and then end up not liking the makeup, and I got super sick of it. People are so caught up in an image or Instagram makeup and don’t think what looks good in real life. Lol anyway, long rant but just to say I appreciate your channel and really enjoy your videos.

This video was a fucking lifesaver! I have the traditional Finnic face structure: a wide face with deep-set hooded eyes, a heavy brow with puffy lids and downturned outer corners - a nightmare for applying eye makeup. For YEARS I've tried all kinds of hooded eye trickery, with varying degrees of success. I could never quite figure out what it was that made me succeed/fail, and I thought I'm just not the girl for interesting eyeshadow colors. But now that you mentioned K-Stew and I looked her pictures more closely, I now realize I have all this real estate on the side of my face I never understood to utilize! Your content is always super helpful, with researched and detailed explanations on how different makeup application works for your face.

You are an artist and I have an idea, but I'm not so sure if this is something workable. Maybe you could show us, what you just explain with the other shapes, on a drawing on your favored medium. Like these makeup work books. I myself have hooded lids and not much space to my brows. Like your examples of JLaw and KStew. I tend to blend out my shimmer a little over the crease, because it prevents transfer and kinda gives the illusion of more space. I mostly use small brushes or else I have the deepening shade all up in my brows. I too like elongating my looks outward. I like trying different looks, that at the end look good on fotos but not so much in real live, or you can't really see them with open eyes. Thanks for the video and inspiration 😁
