Agreed! It’s about learning how to enhance what you have versus changing what you don’t have. That’s all makeup should be instead of all of these trends that aren’t attainable for everyone when using makeup or even after plastic surgery.

I've found this is the way to do things. No matter whether it is makeup or clothing, working with your features works best. I've looked into styles over the past 100 years, found clothing and makeup styles that were designed for my face and body type, then looked into what exactly about those styles made it so suited for my body and face. Those elements can be brought into current styles while still being fashionable. I also sometimes choose to dress in vintage style and rock what looks great on me. I get compliments all the time on my style because I dress in a way that embraces my looks even if it doesn't fully fit current styles, so I think it's safe to say that it works.

  • @CeruleanStar

@@andynonymous6769 I'd say the advice still applies, but what you wear is completely up to you. I don't think I've ever met a truly ugly person, at least not one who is physically ugly. Beauty is subjective, and confidence and personality ultimately matter more. If someone chooses to judge you negatively based on your appearance, consider it a bullet dodged. They aren't the type of person you would do well to spend your time with. No matter your physical appearance, surround yourself with people who build you up and support you rather than try to tear you down. Be the type of person these people would want to spend time with themselves by doing the same for yourself and others. Beauty has benefits, but it isn't as important as society currently claims. Having good people around you is what matters most. Truthfully, wear whatever you feel most confident in. Just be aware if you are masking insecurities by doing so. It is better to face those insecurities and learn to love them and yourself than to ignore them by painting over them. (Easier said than done, I know.) Makeup is best used as a form of self expression. Using it as a bandage won't ultimately help you feel any better because bandages don't heal insecurities or trauma. You still have to take it off at the end of the night. Sorry for the long comment. I wish you the best!

Korean make up really taught me how to make a feature out of my eye shape. I found the western style cardinal sin of putting most liner in the middle of the bottom lash line really makes my eyes pop. Tight-lining and lots of mascara and the contour method shown here gives you fresher looking eyes. The day I gave up trying to wing was such a relief.

I have slightly downturned eyes and I’ve found the best eye look for me is following my natural lines. I never thought liner suited me because I only ever tried doing the wings. Now I just extend my lash line downwards with my pencil liner maybe 5mm. It gives no lifting effect obviously but it makes my eyes look so big! I’ve also been curling my lower lashes so that combined with a nice hydrating concealer is just my ideal look. I understand most people want that lifting effect and that’s very beautiful but I just want to remind everyone that you don’t need to fight your nature to enhance yourself :)

I also do that 😊 For many years I avoided liner in the lower lash line, because I thought it would bring the eye down too much, but now I do put liner there! I can't do a bold line anywhere, but either a smudged line, or a thin line, in the right place, looks good, balances out the look, still maintaining my eye shape!

I'm "of a certain age" (over 50) and I was wondering if you might be be willing to do a spot on wrinkled creases and hooded eye? I know that's a huge ask but I personally LOVE color and expression! I don't want to limit myself to the older eye, minimalist looks. I'm a former style blogger from the olden days lol and would like to remain in the relevant and uptodate arena. As we age, our insides rarely reflect the outside. And believe me, when you wake up and look in the mirror and don't know who that body belongs to, it's super difficult to find someone who has the talent to guide you. Thanks so much for the hooded eye and especially the downturned eye! Your tutorials are incredible easy to understand. I appreciate you! 🥂

I discovered it when I was new to makeup and couldn't get all the eyeliner off at night, and loving the look the next morning when only the liner around my lash line was left. As someone that has downturned eyes, I appreciate you doing this video. But I would like to make an observation 🙋🏻‍♀️ Your definition of downturned eyes based on the placement of the outer corner was spot on, but the examples didn't match, let me explain.. There are many "downturned eyes" that do not have to do with the outer corner. 05:57 Sydney Sweeney is an example of that. What happens with her is that the lower lash line goes further down, exposing the white part of the eye bellow the iris, and that gives the downturned eye look. But her outer eye corner still has lift. That eye shape is much easy to work with, imo Other type is when the apex of the upper lid is more inward than in other eyes, making the shape of the upper lid "go down sooner", also giving that droopy appearence, but again, it doesn't necessarily have the outer corner lower than the inner corner. That's mainly what happens in the example 10:05, her lower lash line is basically straight, it barely goes down, and has a little lift at the outer corner. At 9:18 I honestly don't see downturned or droopiness anywhere, and it's definitely not about the inner corners, maybe it's the lower lid issue again. I have never really seen a makeup tutorial with a downturned eye model that really has the outer corner of the eye lower than the inner corner, it's always about those other cases. It would be awesome if you could pull one off 😉 Personally, my style of eyeliner is about following my eye shape (and I do have the lower outer corner) I don't fake a lift, but I still can't put eyeliner anywhere, or it will look weird.

I think a negative canthal tilt (downturned outer corners) is a major part of Sarah Michelle Gellar's allure. It somehow made her seem both gentle and dangerous at once (perfect for hunting and slaying vampires). Sarah has atypical facial features that all work in harmony together which made her stand out from the crowd, especially after she went blonde for Buffy. I always thought she was one of the most attractive celebrities in Hollywood in the 90s, especially when considering her sultry voice. It's true that a negative canthal tilt is a feature more often seen on men with heavy brow-bones, but it doesn't read in the same way on a woman where it's sometimes called "bedroom" eyes. If the eyebrows are also highest in the middle, then the overall effect is sad puppy-dog, which I think is appealing on guys as well.

DUDE. I learned the "don't fight it, don't try to beat it into submission, lean into whatever is naturally there" type of idea with my hair years ago. How did I not think to apply this to other parts of life until now?! 🙃 I've always heard them called "melancholy eyes". Every charicature drawing I've ever had done focuses on two things; my big bottom lip, and my big, bright blue, down turned eyes. This video has been SO HELPFUL. I really feel like I'm learning about how to use a medium(in this case makeup) to enhance part of my life. Not just to hurry up and throw 'paint on the barn' to cover everything and fight what's actually there. I'm speechless. I feel like another achievement has been unlocked in life. I don’t have downturned eyes necessarily but I’m 45 and they’re getting more hooded (I’m not thrilled) and they kind of bulge out in the center of the lid so i have to be careful with my shimmer game or i look crazy. I always just want them to look bigger in general, but also love the intensely smoky look I’ve done for years (but is getting less flattering potentially). Like many, I’ve tried doing the lifted thing... and i feel like i AM fighting my face. Though I’m sure there’s a better/easier way. I don’t love the brightener on my waterline so... I dunno. What you showed in this video took me so many years to perfect for my eyes. I wish I could've watched this video when I was younger. Such a great resource for anyone working with an eyeshape that hardly gets mentioned in makeup tutorials. Thanks for making this :)

HOORAY for this Alex. I always learn so much from your videos. Amen to this whole concept of not fighting your features. I made a comment on the hooded eye video that I stopped doing "lifted" makeup when I hit fifty and started leaning into my round, slightly downturned eye shape. That comment is still getting likes so I think there was definitely an audience for this.

I just want to say, thank you for taking the time to create a video on downturned eyes. KZread doesn’t have many videos covering it and it’s really refreshing seeing your approach on beautifying this eye shape. It was very easy to follow and understand! I will follow the shape of my eye instead of doing the conventional cat eyeliner look, now that it looks 10x better on my features. Thank you once again! 🙏🤍

this is perfect timing! i have slightly downturned / hooded eyes and was always trying to lift them but the liner just looked really forced and i never found an angle that i liked. recently i started following the upper lash line all the way out and then swooping upwards on the outside like you described in the video! it works so much better for my eye shape. everyone always says follow the lower lash line but the angle was always too extreme. thank you for this video!!

My biggest tip as someone with slightly downturned hooded eyes is to avoid liquid eyeliner at all costs. I use a brown eyeliner _stick_ and go from the outer corner of my _under_ eye outwards following the natural line of my eyelid and then I smudge out any harsh lines to give my eyes a wider look. I also use a more pink toned nude eyeshadow and put it on the top of my eyelid only as low as the crease (extending it a bit out at the same angle as the eyeliner) and if I’m gonna do under-eye shadow I start just after the inner corner and extend it about halfway. I’ve noticed that when I do under eye makeup extending to the outer edge of my eye, it makes my eyes look almost droopy, so ending it halfway avoids that for me. I also recommend doing inner corner highlight in a triangle shape rather than a circular one, where the highlight follows your eyelid rather than just sitting on the edge of your eye. (This: 👁> rather than this: 👁,)

@@Elle... I'll try anything lol.. this makes sense bc liquid liner just darkens my lid no matter how scrimpy I use the stuff.. it is so messy and looks terrible. I've been experimenting with new ways to create definition and I enjoy the trends. I have noticed that when you don't go all the way out with powder liner it looks the best. Plus I use only a highlighted lid and a complimentary color up almost to my brow. Then I underline the brow for definition again.. I haven't done highlight in the inner corner yet. That is next 🤞 then a tightline on the lower lids (lid?) with a colorful tone. My issue too is that my lashes are tiny and don't show up when I use mascara on my bottom lashes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can see my uppers with mascara. My recent way was till tightline on top with just concealer on lids and to the brow. Nothing on the bottom. I'm definitely ready for the change! I'll let you know how it turns out. Thank you for the tips! (Sorry for the lengthy explanation lol)

You're awesome for offering a different emphasis on embracing down turned eyes. I personally prefer a different look on me, and when my wedding makeup artist started doing the shape you show in this video with eyeliner, I ended up removing it and doing my liner with your foxy eye makeup method, because that one was effective for my eyeshape. Either way you rock!

Your videos encouraged me to actually buy my first ever two eyeshadow palettes. My eyes are slightly downturned and a bit hooded with not too much space between the upper lash line and eyebrows, but sometimes working with what you already have can bring you to interesting discoveries. I see make up as an art form as someone who draws and paints digitally, so some of my looks are nothing short of wild, but I like it that way. I'm having so much fun with trying out different placements and bold colors like greens and yellows and tons of glitter. I spent my whole life avoiding eyeshadows because I just felt like it's not for me, but sometimes I smoke it out halfway to my temple and upwards and I'm having so much fun. Your videos are truly a godsent. I like how you always manage to find creative solutions for a lot of looks and eyeshapes, and your voice is also very soothing to listen to. Have a wonderful day/evening!

I’m 37 and just now learning how to do make up, and this is SO helpful (along with your other videos). I have felt SO stupid and incompetent about make up because it never, ever looks right on me…. But apparently I’ve been doing make up for eyes that aren’t like mine (partially hooded AND downturned) 99% of the time, so no wonder. This is such a big deal, I can’t even describe it.

in high school i used to wear straight/upward eyeliner every day and i already knew my eyeshape was down turned a little so i never got the advice of following your lower lash line up because that just disconnected it for me and letting that way go helped me alot ! and i stopped wearing makeup for a while and tried it again thinner and under my crease which comes down a bit so exactly how you showed to do and now i never have to try hard to get a good shape i just swoop it under and out and its so much easier instead of having to look a curtain way into the mirror and having it droop down when you relax your face so i think taking a break made me more intuitive with what worked for me as well! you’re truly a breath of fresh air alex with giving different options instead of a one size fits all mentality
