    I'm sad to say that this really happens! I was in France not long ago and i was lost. I went up to a woman, asked if she spoke english and she said 'no, i do not speak english, now if you don't mind, i'm on my way to buy some begonias!' and she walked off. This is absolutely true!

  • @notthere83

    @notthere83

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't know what the begging situation looks like where you were but in Vienna, if somebody asks you if you speak English, about 19/20 times it's somebody who if you stop starts going into often pretty long-winded monologues about how they want some money from you. So maybe she assumed that that's what would happen if she stopped to listen. (It's of course still weird that she didn't just ignore you or lie.)

    Brighton Beach avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Two elderly men are standing on the street and discussing something in Russian. A tourist approaches them and addresses with: "Excuse me, where is..." and continued asking for directions to a nearby attraction. Two men politely stopped talking but said nothing. The tourist seemingly perplexed softly asked: "Do you speak English?" to no avail. A somewhat vexed tourist left the two men. One of them said the other in Russian (interpreted): "So, has his English helped him?"

    @Mario There's more to Britain than England. :) Besides, I meant in terms of pronunciation and ability: more people know French, but those who know German can, IME, speak it far better. We Brits find German a lot easier to pronounce than French, as it has fewer new sounds to learn and pronunciation is closer to English than languages like French.

    I'm german but I have to admit ^^.....deadpan british humour is the best ! but it's good you know to see that humour can be a connection between different countries. it's not always about who is better than the other-it's just making fun of yourselves and laughing with eachother instead of laughing at eachother. and yes, such a kind of comedy is one reason why I am learning english XD
