John Doe Bret Hart was leaving to a rival company of the WWE and refused to let the other guy win. Bret thought the match was going to end a tie and he was going to keep his championship belt but Vince McMahon (owner of WWE) set up a plan to double cross Bret and make him lose the belt. Only a handful of people really knew what was really going on.

The issues Chael neglected to mention were 1) Bret had already signed a contract with Vince McMahon to stay with his company for 20 years for less money per year. Vince asked to void the contract due to financial distress. Vince wanted Bret to sign with WCW because he no longer wanted to honour the contract he had already legally agreed to. 2) Bret Hart had equal creative control in his current contract. Therefore the outcome had to be agreed to by both parties. It had to be a consensus among all parties: Vince and Bret. That’s why Vince went to get his licking because he knew he was in breach of Bret’s contract and if Bret physically battered him they would be even, since they both broke the law. 3) Bret has had at least 1 major stroke that caused him to have to relearn how to walk after the incident. Therefore I would trust the physical evidence and/or the account of any other party witness to the knockout that hasn’t also had a severe stroke or severe drug addiction with or without 1 or more overdoses more than the precise details recalled by Bret. So it’s most likely Bret struck Vince with an overhand right or straight right or possibly a right uppercut with Vince’s head turned and bend over. In the end Bret was misused in WCW and Vince used the screw job to create one the biggest heels in pro wrestling history: Mr. McMahon.

Chael was very close to the main point on this. Yes, the Montreal Screwjob did setup Brett for a storyline in WCW that fizzled out because Brett's head got kicked off by Goldber. However, it also setup Vince McMahon as the biggest heel the wrestling business has ever seen, started the Attitude Era, and made the WWE into what it is today. It was all a terrific work.

Truth is, the screwjob never needed to happen. There was no risk of Bret taking the belt on WCW television. Vince didn't have his back against the wall. It was basically Vince wanting to get one last jab in on Bret for leaving him. Bret was becoming difficult to work with, and his contract with WWE was enormous. WWE and Hart went to court after the screwjob, because it actually breached Hart's contract (creative control clauses). Vince not only lost a star, had to pay out a settlement, but then was stuck with Shawn Michaels who would retire the next year. Make no mistake about it, Vince got lucky with Steve Austin, and had it not been for that, WWE would have sunk. Vince has actually done a very poor job with his father's company. Only having 2 periods of growth, or popularity (1st with Hogan for about 5 years, then with Austin for 3 years). Monday Night Raw shows now draw about 2500-5000 people, their network subscriptions haven't grown for 5 years, and their stock is considered the most inflated in NYSE history (meaning there probably is a huge FCC scandal on the horizon). Had it not been for their philanthropy cash grabs, they would have $0 revenue streams. Even their TV licensing deals lose them money, despite how gigantic they are. Which why they're forced to do mega shows to private parties in other countries just to make some cash,

And it's HIS company.he bought it off his dad. Wrestling should have died at the end of the 80's early 90's but, Vince has kept it going in an age where there's no illusion, kayfabe, no magic and it's PG. He's done very well actually. And Bret deserved it. He never 'won't the belt like he seems to believe. Vince says "you will be champ" and once he says it's over you should thank him, hand it back and take your handsome paycheck. Not act hard done to. Bret had a charmed life and it went to shit once he turned his back on Vince. That is way more telling than The Montreal Screwjob is of Vince

@Chael Sonnen, you are correct in your outcome, and most of the details and problem solving deduction you used to come to educated solution. A few things out of order and or needing a little tweak are as follows. Before the match Vince, Brett, maybe Shane, have to watch again to get specifics. They meet one last time to essentially get a “finish” agreed upon so everyone can know the ending. Brett secretly wears a wire, as they deny the documentary camera inside the room and push him out (showing them entering getting a good look inside then waiting outside in the hall listening to them speak via wire tap) they soon come out shake hands and everything is smiles and happy. Brett immediately turns his smile into a frown as his depressed miserable pouting picks back up where it left off. He explains to camera or voice over the meeting, how he interprets it’s meaning, and his thoughts on it; Vince, WWF, Michaels and anyone else he feels like bashing that moment. -the plan was to be a DQ finish, a “Shmozz” essentially, Owen, Davey, and Jim Neidhart (if he didn’t go to WCW by then) the ‘hart foundation either does a run in, or HHH, Chyna and his crew run in with the Hart’s in close pursuit to even the would be -jumping- This is what Brett believed then, 2 years later when Owen died, 10 years ago when Shawn and Brett sat down face to face and discussed this in great detail -check it out if you even think conspiracy plays a role, anyone understands Bret knows he is his gimmick he’s the biggest MARK, he wouldn’t play him self 25 years later swearing up and down until this day it was a screw.. anyways, SGT. Slaughter interviewed Hart, he was Vinces’ security the entire night, before during and after the match and punch.. he admitted 3 separate times that this was a SHOOT. Shawn, Shane, HHH, slaughter, and other witnesses all back up the punch story. HHH admits to the set up, Michaels denied it for a few years then switched up around 2000 a tiny, then came full clean when he became a born again Christian. Which makes him just show his self for his colors, Bret best Shawn up a month before this event also. Do not forget the LOOOGIE* Bret hawked back and slammed into Vince’s face also and almost into his mouth, hitting his hair, dripping upon his for head and nose in front of a sell out Canadian crowd. I haven’t seen it before or since, spitting is something nobody does especially a real booger filled cum swap spit to a face. MEME? Hello! The disrespect and embarrassment is something Vince wouldn’t ever take knowingly but only on surprise. Bret asked Earl if they are screwing him, the ref said no, which was minutes before the match; which was true . Upon getting into the ring was it then walkie talkie communicated to Earl of the finish and he was confused and shook the hole match. He felt less then a man for some time after until he put personal friendship aside and looked at it from money and outsiders views. After the bell sounds, Brett pops up (out of KAYFABE and clearly showing the work by showing no fatigue or injury. Further breaking character provides proof for the screw job, meanwhile the Ref is halfway up the ramp running like a puppy with his tail in his legs and Shawn had the belt and jumped into the steroid pumped HHH arms as he carried Shawn to the back. Hart’s family didn’t rush, they were shocked and still didn’t understand until Bret destroyed the property in the ring. Everyone is in the back now, Bret is last to walk the ramp. Meets brothers, cousins, kids and wife ! Documentary picks up here. Check slaughters interview for play by play of him and Vince from the backstage to punch. Brett walks to locker room also yelling for Vince who is hiding getting his plan together with as many big wrestlers surrounding him to survive. Adrenaline pumping and Vince is confused scared and nervous , he wasn’t the “heel” yet this is to come.. Brett finds the locker room first and enters where the cameras stay in hall. Here the brothers and family stand and Brett’s WIFE starts cursing out HHH by his real name “Paul” as Paul stands on the wall arms folded shaking his head denying it but being polite which shows all the guilt one needs. Protecting the door you can say since Shawn and Brett are inside and wrestlers only. Owen stays out since HHH is also and this was meant as a ( 1 vs 1 ) grown men speaking time (Shawn - Brett).. Brett State’s he first calmly walks to his locker, instead of erupting in rage at Michaels undressing. Brett is 95% sure Michaels knew but can’t prove it just yet since he knows that devil Vince easily could have played all the boys. On top of it, Michaels is pleading his case to Brett damn near on knees with hands grasped as in prayer to god; “ I swear I knew nothing! On my child! I knew nothing I was just as shocked man !” And those things ! Brett didn’t beat the poor puppy either because he wanted proof or he just felt bad for this pathetic “man” . Brett finally tells Shawn “if I find out you were involved I’m beating your ass” Vince and the goons enter, Shawn feels better HHH everyone there. Vince begins his prepared ‘statement’ and Hitman could give a god damn! Brett waits for him to shut up (Brett’s story his words not mine ^^) Not listening to anything just waiting for the lying voice to stop. Brett now in towel says “I’m going to take a shower, and if you’re here when I get out; I’m gonna knock you out” Turns enters shower. Vince surprised but understands, calms his son and others like Brisco, Patterson, etc. He explains to the locker room essentially as Brett rinses off , that , he doesn’t need help or anyone to fight his battles, he’s Vince damn it a grown ass man, Brett has every right to feel that way, and if it’s a shot he wants then he can get it and call it a deal. The strap is safe with Shawn and WWF Bret is done with his last match, no Monday night Raw; Vince just has to take a punch from Brett who he thinks can’t punch or fight anyways.. besides he will heal, make millions and life goes on.. the crowd who is on Vince side agrees (had no choice since he’s the boss and owner damn it) and Brett finishes up basically at that moment ( which rinse takes full bath or shower at hotel or house since it’s Canada so don’t expect a full on long shower especially after that screw job and the gathering MOB outside the showers) Brett steps out wraps him self and walks to the locker and hey, nobody left everyone’s there; Brett has to keep his word, pussy out, or start to talk it out.. Brett being Bret, walks up to Vince, Vince says while he sees him approaching (Vince squares up shoulders facing him , no sucker punches being thrown etc VINCE is smart and tough, and Brett doesn’t know that VINCE wants the punch and then end it) so Brett thinking Vince May be scared who knows? Vince blurts, “well Brett, one shot, give me your best, I admit it I deserve it” Brett doesn’t uppercut ; he had 2 strokes or heart attack’s since so his stories now may be off or he simply traded UPPERCUT with RIGHT STRAIGHT RIGHT CROSS ETC To nit pick such a small detail when this was witnessed by so many is a reach.. hell hitman May think the audience is stupid and said uppercut since it’s the most famous word for PUNCH besides haymaker, and just substituted the word for story sake... Brett hits him in the cheek bone under eye sort of, Vince goes down to his knee I believe.. this is what his own crew stated, Brett said he laid him out but didn’t knock him out so I’ll take the family of Vince over Brett.. the punch happened and of course the bitter puncher will exaggerate as humans do:. Then the documentary FILMS/PICKS UP with the possy quietly leaving the locker room into the hall with the camera secretly recording as VINCE holds his arm or face don’t remember but is visibly shaken and getting his wits about him as he walks unassisted down the hall back to his “office” Vince wouldn’t ever let someone walk him back or help carry him with a arm over a shoulder . Vince is a stereotypical MANS MAN, no weakness no pussy in him and cannot show it all but the camera caught him!! Vince is fine with the backstage normals seeing him staggered but not the PUBLIC the MARKS the outsiders who are paying !! Everything I said is backed up in interviews, documentary’s, etc etc everyone has spoken and given there side.. a work? No People who believe even the close people, don’t know what to believe anymore and that’s what’s Vince wants; but I have come to believe if you know a good amount about professional wrestling and watched during that time; throw in logic, reasoning, common sense, time time time, stories change and stories that stay true.. it’s so obvious that Brett was FOKC3D IN HIS ANRSEHULL!

That so much drama for a fake wrestling. Look if im getting paid big bucks and boss told me you gotta lose. I'll lose period . Its my job. Brett is a spoiled athlete who complains about losing a fake championship from a fake sport. I heard rumors that BRETT WAS OFFERED A CHARACTER IN GAME OF THRONES BUT REFUSE TO HAVE HIS CHARACTER DIE. HBO SAID FUCK OFF WE ARE THE BOSS, OWNER, PRODUCER OF THIS SHIT YOU AINT GONNA TELL ME WHAT TO DO. SO BRETT STARTED TELLING PEOPLE THAT HE GOT SCREWED AND CALLS IT HBO SCREWJOB. My point is you cant go to your janitorial work and tell your BOSS im not cleaning the windows. What I want is to fuck Melanie from HR then watch tv and you will pay me the whole time.
