Do You Really Need To Upgrade Your Gimbal? DJI RS3 Pro vs. Original Ronin S

Фильм және анимация

Camera gimbals are incredible tools and the technology just gets better each year, but how necessary is it to upgrade to the latest model if you’ve already got a gimbal that’s a few generations behind? This video compares the original DJI Ronin S to the updated RS3 Pro to see if the upgrade is worth the price.
I owe a huge thanks to ‪@PeterLindgren1‬ for letting me borrow his RS3 Pro to compare with my original Ronin S. My video is less of an in-depth review and more of an overview of when/if an upgrade is worth it. For a full RS3 Pro review, check out Peter's video: • This is NOT Just A Gim...

    Thanks for the video, Tom! Also thanks to Peter for joining you! Appreciate the conversation about needing to upgrade gear whenever new gear is released. One minor correction. At 2:01 you mention the payload for the RS3 Pro being 6.6lbs. The RS3 Pro actually has a 10lb payload, while the RS3 (non-Pro) has the 6.6lb capacity. Thanks again for the video!

    I have 3 gimbals - the Original DJI Roin S, the Ronin RS2 and the Zhijun Crane M2S. I can honestly say I enjoy using the Oroginal DJI Ronin S the most because it felt most sturdy, rugged and felt overall better built - yes, it's a little heavier and less compact and definitely needs a small extension pole, the grip handle similar to the one shown and fordable tripod legs, but it's still my favorite to use.

    I have the aircross 2 from moza . I love it but I dropped it and it has some issues now. It still works well and it's very comosct. But the rs3 is even more co pact with the detachable battery. The thi go is I am most of the time aphotographer. Like 80 percent a photographer. But sometimes do both in the same day and want to be packed light, I don't like using apps for gimbals (the monitor will be so nice) and of course that it lock itself is so convenient as I need to change quickly between photography and filming. I could pack the gimbals very fast and easy in my backpack and use my camera for photography. But I don't know if I need the upgrade as I already have a quite good gimbal. But the ronin rs3 seems like a gimbal that can last me for years!

    To add to Tom's take, here is my view for anyone who may want it. I started my channel with a DJI Pocket 2. I then went to an RSC2. I am now on the RS2. All this to say that you can do pretty much anything with whatever you have on hand as long as it has a baseline of quality. Most DJI products do have that baseline and have had it for quite a while. DJI is an iterative company, you see. They build good things and then add marginal improvements. With that framework, consider the RS3 and RS3 pro in the context of the Mk1 and Mk2 lineup. If you aren't going to take advantage of the featureset of the Mk3 product (auto locking-big whup, larger dimensional payload-actually cool) don't FOMO too hard. If you don't own a Gimbal yet, and are on a budget, the RSC2 is phenomenal, perhaps even better than the RS2 in some ways. If you do own one of the MK2 units, outside of specific needs, stick to that.

  • @tombuck

    @tombuck

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great insight. I definitely realized that while the new gimbals are definitely better than my original, the biggest improvement to my work is going to come from me spending time practicing and experimenting with that I already have.

  • @POVwithRC

    @POVwithRC

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Ellie Spohr Well, I can tell you this. The RSC2 handled my FX3, a Rode SVMX, and any of the GM wide triplets (14, 24, 35) or the 16-35 Zeiss. Just over 1600 grams for the gear if using the 14mm. Therefore, easy to say that the gimbal itself is up to the task of running your gear, which will weigh less. Much less if no mic. You could beat someone to death with the SVMX. The RSC2 weights 1300 grams or so. RS3 weighs 1300 too. Your S weighs 1800. Oof what a porker! At the end of the day, you could grab the RSC2 and keep half the money in your pocket as it goes on sale to make room for the vanilla RS3. I give you my disembodied voice on the internet guarantee that the RSC2 is absolutely worth your time if you are coming from a Mk1 S.

    @@tombuck Thanks for letting me know. The isolation and audio was beautiful in this video. Im restarting my channel next month and I’ve been on a hunt for great audio with my Canon system. Im all in on Rode right now but I’ve been thinking about the 416 and the 50 but it’s not justified right now. Soon though.

    autolock is for delicate flowers. I've been trashing mine in backpack (without sections, just simple backpacsk) since 2018 and only thing needed change was battery handle. Got used one for 100eur and I'm not switching until there is some obvious difference. I can change lenses while it's turned on (needs custom tuning in app for that trick tho), I can unpack and shoot in less than a minute... original S is the mvp.

    Game changer it will be a 4-axis or 5-axis gimbal. RS2 and RS3 are just an evolution of 3-axis gimbals where the operator's walking technique is the most important.

    This one was a bit of a mess in terms of mics haha 😁 The intro in the desert and the ending in my studio were done with the Sennheiser MKH50 running through the FX3. The part where we're outside near the water was on the Sony ECM-B1M connected to the a7SIII (it was insanely windy so there's a lot of noise cancellation happening but it worked!), and then in between the intro and the beach where I explain a bit about the gimbals, I just used the Rode Videomic Go II via USB for a quick Voiceover.

    hello from Ukraine 🇺🇦💪🏼)) need your advice. I am a professional director of photography, I have been shooting for 4 years on my old S, ia. completely satisfied. my hands are not from the ass and this steadicam completely satisfies me. and here is the question, will the new RS3 pro surprise me in terms of technical characteristics? How much better does it stabilize? does it have the same twitches as the S version? I don't want to spend extra money on a new steadicam if it's the same as the old one. but I don’t want to overpay for a built-in monitor or automatic blocking or the ability to press Rec or Stop via bluetooth) I do everything the old fashioned way.

  • @tombuck

    @tombuck

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Mykola! This is a bit of a tough question. Honestly, in terms of just stabilization, I don’t think there’s much of a difference. And if you don’t care about monitors/Bluetooth/etc, then there’s even less of a difference. Where the new gimbals might stand out is with how easy they are to balance and how much better they are at locking/folding up for travel. If those are pain points for you now, then and upgrade could be worth it. Otherwise the classic S is still outstanding.

    The fucked up thing is that while the RSC 2 supports BMPCC 4K and even 6K Pro, the RS 3 Non-Pro does not support them, and DJI forces you to buy the RS 3 Pro instead, even though weight is far from being over the limit of the RS 3 Non-Pro. DJI has been getting more and more greedy in the last few years..
